  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and coping skills among middle school students. Method: The participants were 674 students in three middle schools in GyeongGi-Do. The data were collected from June 10 to 20, 2005. The instruments used were the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Ways of Coping Checklist. The data were analyzed using the SPSS-Win 12.0 program. Result: Self-esteem showed a significant positive correlation with positive coping skills (r= .162. p= .000). As for the positive coping skills, there was a significant difference by grade (F= 4.69, p= .010), relationship with parent (F=4.036, p= .02), and relationship with siblings (F=3.902, p= .02). As for the negative coping skills, there was a significant difference by grade (F=3.05, p= .04), condition of living with parents (F=3.559, p= .02), economic status (F=3.736, p= .02), relationship with sibling (F=3.408, p= .03), and troubling matters (F=5.422, p= .005). Conclusion: Positive coping skills may be effective for adjustment because they positively related to self-esteem. Self-esteem and coping skills should be considered when an adolescent's mental health enhancement program is designed.

  • Purpose: The study aimed to assess differences between nurses' and patients' perception of the communication skills to promote patients' health literacy in a hospital. Methods: The convenience sample consisted of 150 patients and 169 nurses in a university hospital. The data were collected from January to February 2014 using the Communication Skills Scale for Hospital nurses and patients. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Lin's concordance were used to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences (t=9.44, p<.001) between the perception of nurses ($8.18{\pm}2.00$) and patients ($5.49{\pm}2.95$) on the communication skills used by nurses. Most nurses ($3.87{\pm}0.39$) perceived that the communication skills were effective, but more patients ($4.13{\pm}0.62$) reported significantly higher scores (t=-4.34, p<.001). Conclusion: The results implied that nurses need to make sure that their communication skills are effective when they communicate with patients, and education programs for nurses to develop the advanced communication skills would be necessary.

  • The thesis suggests the proper ftaining methods and their future direction in order for bodyguards to have a general idea of basic skills of escort and develop them. What is meant by basic skills are the basic abilities of bodyguards for escort indluding physical strength, martial arts, and manipulation of equipment. The equipment in the thesis is confined to guns. The following are the requircments for the training of basic skills; 1, A bodyguard should be careful not to expose any equipment he uses his basic skills so that he does not make others feel uncomfortable. 2. He should be trained to give the safety of the person(s) escorted the first priority. 3. He should have the ability to take care of at least one attacker. 4. He should be trained to be able to evaluate the trend of attacks and keep up with it. Training fo basic skills are divided into three parts-physical training, martial arts and use of equipment. Each part is divided into basic training, applied training, and professional training, which again are integrated in one master training program. Especially, development of equipment which helps to take care of attacker(s) quickly without casualties and learning to use the equipment efficiently will accelerate the improvement of basic skills. The author of the thesis worked for Presidential Security Service for fourteen years and suggests the most efficient, protection-oriented way of training based on his experience.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze relationships among science achievement, science process skills and affective perception of high school students. The affective perception was included attitude toward science and science anxiety in the study. The instruments were developed HARS and SAMS for this study. The subject was sampled 1,115 students by stratified cluster sampling method. The major findings of this study were as follows: The tendency to affective perception was investigated according to students variables. Atittude toward science was showed a negative perception on female than male, in rural area than city. Science anxiety was percepted highly on female than male, in rural area than city. Attitude toward science showed positive relations to science process skills, science achievement, but which showed negative relation to science anxiety. Science anxiety showed negative relations among science process skills, science achievement and attitude toward science. Structural relationships among affective perception, science process skills and science achievement were analyzed by effect size through the path analysis on the independent and dependent variables. By the results, it was indicated that there have significant direct effect not only affective perception influence on science achievement but also on science process skills in hypothesized model. Prediction of science achievement and science process skills were clarified to characteristics of the affective perception. Therefore, understanding about affective perception will be helpful to make the strategy of science teaching

  • Purpose : The establishment of clinical skills centers(CSCs) to facilitate the teaching and assessment of clinical skills is one of the more recent developments occurring in medical schools worldwide. The aim of this study is to review experiences of CSCs in other medical schools and learn how to design a CSC in our school. Methods : This study was undertaken in two steps. In the first step, educational activities of CSCs in 6 medical schools were reviewed. In the second step, a search for articles of journals regarding clinical skills education in CSCs was conducted. Results : The review of CSCs programs reveals variations among centers in teaching and assessment activities. However there are increasing trends of utilizing CSCs in teaching and learning in CSCs. The delivery of clinical skills is expanded by an increasing use of simulated patients and realistic simulators. Through an audio/video technology, availability of more detailed monitoring and feedback. CSCs also provide greater opportunity for assessment of communications skills, physical examination and practical procedures. Conclusions: CSCs contribute to the effectiveness in clinical teaching and assessment. Educational benefits of a CSC can be maximized by utilizing new delivery methods, implementing educational strategies and staff development programmes.

  • The TOEIC has widely used to evaluate business English proficiency in Korea, but those who achieved high scores still often face difficulties in performing their duties in English at work. This implies that the test may not evaluate business English proficiency effectively enough. With an ultimate goal of proposing an effective way of assessing business English proficiency, therefore, his study analyzed the predictive validity of the TOEIC. A correlation analysis was conducted between TOEIC scores of 64 office workers of multinational companies and their working skills in English evaluated by themselves, and their colleagues and seniors. Its results illustrated a significant correlation between their listening and reading scores and their working skills measured by all the groups, but not between their scores and their working skills in speaking and writing. In addition, the study did a delphi study to identify working skills in English to be assessed in business English tests and a contents analysis of the TOEIC. The results suggest business English tests should be able to assess working skills by work types and more direct testing of working skills in speaking and writing is needed.
