Recently nano meter size pattern (sub-micro scale) can be machined mechanically using a diamond tool. Many studies have found a 'size effect' which referred to a specific cutting energy increase with the decrease in the uncut chip thickness at micro scale machining. A new analysis method was suggested in order to observe 'size effect' in nano scale machining and to verify the cause of the 'size effect' in this study. The diamond tool was indented to a vertical depth of 1,000nm depth in order to simplify the stress state and the normal force was measured continuously. The tip rounding was measured quantitatively by AFM. Based on the measurements and theoretical analysis, it was verified that the main cause of the 'size effect' in nano scale machining is geometrically necessary dislocations, one of the intrinsic material characteristics. st before tool failure.

Mechanical behavior of rock joints usually can be characterized by small-scale laboratory shear tests due to economical and technical limitations, but their applicability to the behaviour of rock mass has been always questioned by a number of researchers because of scale effect. Though there have been several researches regarding the scale effect, it has been a controversial problem how to apply the result of small-scale laboratory shear test directly to field design from different conclusions among researchers. In order to grasp the trend of scale effect of shear behavior, a series of direct shear tests on replicas of natural rock joint surfaces made of gypsum cement with different size and roughness were conducted and analyzed. Result showed that as the size of the specimen increased, average peak shear displacement increased, but average shear stiffness and average peak dilation angle decreased. As for the dependency of scale on shear strength, the degree of scale effect was dependent on normal stress and roughness of rock joint. For the condition of low normal stress and high roughness, decrease of average peak shear strength with increasing size of joint was evident.
An enhanced continuum model for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in a metal matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The size of the punched zone presents an intrinsic length scale, and this results in the size dependence of the overall behavior of the composite. Results show that predicted 0.2% offset yield stresses are increasing with smaller inclusions and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle.
Numerical analysis of wind turbine scale effect was performed by using commercial CFD code, Fluent. For the numerical analysis of wind turbine, the three dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with various turbulence models was tested. As a turbulence mode, the realizable k-e turbulence model was selected for the simulation of wind turbines. To validate the present method, performance of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI wind turbine model was analyzed and compared with its wind tunnel test and blind test data. Using the present method, numerical simulations for various size of wind tunnel models were carried out and characteristics were analyzed in detail. For wind tunnel test model, the size of nacelle may not be scaled down precisely because of available motor. The effect of nacelle size was also computed and analyzed though CFD simulation. The present results showed the good correlations in pre-stall region but much to be improved in post-stall region. In 2006 and 2007, the performance and the scale effect of standard wind turbine model will be tested in KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) LSWT(Low Speed Wind Tunnel) and the present results will be validated with the wind tunnel data.
The purpose of this study is to observe effect on a result of a business performance depending on the business scale and the success factors of quality. Verified hypothesis of the quality of success factors and business performance are conducted in order to conduct this research. The results of hypothesis testing can be summarized as follows : First, depending on the size of the company, quality of corporate success factors in the management and significant positive was verified to be in effect. Second, depending on the size of the small business companies' human resource management, product/process is significantly positive in effect and medium companies' quality information, quality of suppliers in the commercialization of technology is significantly positive in effect. Third, depending on the size of the small business companies' human resource management, product/process financial performance is significantly positive in effect and mid-sized companies, suppliers in the quality significantly positive show the influence of financial performance. The results of measurement through the size of the enterprise and the successful factors of quality impacts on business performance directly.
Black carbon, which is a by-product of combustion of fossil fuel and biomass burning, is the component that imposes the largest uncertainty on quantifying aerosol climate effect. The direct, indirect and semi-direct climate effects of black carbon depend on its state of the mixing with other water-soluble aerosol components. The process that transforms hydrophobic externally mixed black carbon particles into hygroscopic internally mixed ones is called "aging". In most climate models, simple parameterizations for the aging time scale are used instead of solving detailed dynamics equations on the aging process due to the computation cost. In this study, a new parameterization for the black carbon aging time scale due to condensation and coagulation is presented as a function of the concentration of hygroscopic atmospheric components and the black carbon particle size. It is shown that the black carbon aging time scale due to condensation of sulfuric acid vapors varies to a large extent depending on the sulfuric acid concentration and the black carbon particle size. This result indicates that the constant aging time scale values suggested in the literature cannot be directly applied to a global scale modeling. The aging time scale due to coagulation with internally mixed aerosol particles shows an even stronger dependency on particle size, which implies that the use of a particle-size-independent aging time scale may lead to a large error when the aging is dominated by coagulation.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of surface texturing on reduction friction and to understand the potential of friction reduction through micro-scale dimple to fabricate by photolithography on pin-on-disk test using flat-on-flat contact geometry. It was verify that the friction property with respect to the same pitch has been influence on the size of dimple under lubricated sliding contact. Also, we can recognize from Stribeck curve that the friction property has a connection with the size of dimple. It can explain a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. The friction property has been an effect on the size of surface texture on reduction friction, not only because the density of dimple, but also because the ratio of diameter/pitch. This ratio of approximately 0.5 recommend under the tested friction condition. It suggested that the ratio of d/p is an important parameter for surface texture design.
Analytical solution of micro-scale milling process is presented in order to suggest available machining conditions. The size effect should be considered to determine cutting characteristics in micro-scale cutting. The feed per tooth is the most dominant cutting parameter related to the size effect in micro-scale milling process. In order to determine the feed per tooth at which chips can be formed, the finite element method is used. The finite element method is employed by utilizing the Johnson-Cook (JC) model as a constitutive model of work material flow stress. Machining experiments are performed to validate the simulation results by using a micro-machining stage. The validation is conducted by observing cutting force signals from a cutting tool and the conditions of the machined surface of the workpiece.
Purpose of this study is to investigate the size-dependent mechanical properties in micron scale medium. Theories such as the couple stress theory and strain gradient theory explain that the deformation in the micron scale is dependent upon the size of the medium. Specimens of the cantilever type, bridge type and paddle type beam that have thickness of 900, 1000 and 1200 nm and width of 10, 20, 30 and $50{\mu}m$ were fabricated by the MEMS technique. We carried out the bending and torsion test to measure the mechanical properties such as the young's modulus, yield strength and torsional rigidity using the AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy).
Mechanical behavior in nano-sized structures differs from those in macro sized structures due to surface effect. As the ratio of surface to volume increases, surface effect is not negligible and causes size-dependent mechanical behavior. In order to identify this size effect, atomistic simulations are required; however, it has many limitations because too much computational resource and time are needed. To overcome the restrictions of the atomistic simulations and graft the well-established continuum theories, the continuum model considering surface effect, which is based on the bridging technique between atomistic and continuum simulations, is introduced. Because it reflects the size effect, it is possible to carry out a variety of analysis which is intractable in the atomistic simulations. As a part of the application examples, the homogenization method is applied to micro/nano thin films with porosity and the homogenized elastic coefficients of the nano scale thickness porous films are computed in this paper.
