  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to analyze the naming of 'A diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun six meridian patterns and provisions' and to suggest an alternative naming. Methods : 1. The meaning of 'Six meridian(六經)' was reviewed on existing theories and Shanghanlun provisions. 2. Comparing the name of diangostic system with the term in 'Korean Standard Classification of Diseases-6(KCD-6)' and term in 'WHO international standard terminologies on traditional medicine in the western pacific region' was done. Results : 'Six meridian' is customary used in the Shagnhanlun study but its meaning is not match with original Shanghanlun system and could possibly make misunderstanding. So 'Disease pattern identification' is suitable than 'Six meridian' for this diagnostic system. Conclusions : This study suggests that using 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions.'is more appropriate instead of using the name of the six meridian diagnostic system.

  • They have brought many inconsistencies by making much of Wang Sukhwa's six-meridian-transmutation-theory based on Yeollon, Somun in Oriental traditional medicine. On this many medical men such like Hwa Ta have raised objections to that or insisted on its repeal. Wang Geungdang and Yang Soi posed the problem of editing tables of contents, Bang Yujip and Ga Geum etc. gave explanations of fields of six-meridian, Un Cheolcho and Jang Gyeongak etc. presented cause and direction of transmutation. And Gilik Dongdong insisted on its repeal. Sanghannon was the theory that was arranged various experiences of acute epidemic diseases. But they didn't recognize the differences between analogous epidemic diseases, regarded as the same things in Oriental traditional medicine, and this made many inconsistencies. This is the reason why many medical men raised objections to Wang Sukhwa's six-meridian-transmutation-theory.

  • Objectives and Methods : This study is to understand the properties and functions of twelve meridians. It aims to understand the meaning of the meridian names, and to study the properties of the six qi and the method of movement of the meridians by analyzing the six qi of the three yin and three yang from a meteorological perspective. The functions of twelve meridians based on the relationship between the operation of the internal organs and the meridians are then examined. Results and Conclusions : (1) The three yin and three yang includes the properties of six qi at the meridians. (2) The fundamental qi at reverting yin meridian lesser yin meridian and greater yin meridian has the properties of wind, heat and dampness, respectively, which are yang qi, while the fundamental qi at lesser yang meridian, yang brightness meridian and greater yang meridian has the properties of ministerial fire, dryness and cold, respectively, which are yin qi. (3) In the circulation of meridian qi, yang qi ascends at yin meridians while yin qi descends at yang meridians. (4) Three yin meridians belonging to the viscera help the function of intestines, which saves essence qi and then makes it go upward, while three yang meridians belonging to the bowels help the function of converting foodstuff and making it go downward. (5) In the human body, the internal organs play the primary role, and the meridians serve as helpers of the functioning of the internal organs by controlling the six qi.

  • Objectives : This study aims to summarize Tang Zong-hai's Qi transformation theory of the Six meridians through his book "Shanghanlun Qianzhubuzheng傷寒論淺注補正" where he integrated Western anatomy with the Qi transformation theory of East Asian Medicine to interpret Zhang Zhong Jing's "Shanghanlun(傷寒論)". The objective is to assist clinical application. Methods : Focusing on the contents of disease of the six meridians in the "傷寒論淺注補正", Tang's theories on the function of Zangfu(臟腑), Opening-Closing-Pivot(關闔樞), Inter-communication of Zangfu(臟腑相通), the Twelve Meridians(十二經脈) from his other publication "中西匯通醫經精義" were examined and related to in the process of explaining Qi transformation theory in detail. Results : 1. The Qi transformation function of the Taiyang meridian is related to "膀胱者, 氣化則能出" where the Small Intestine and Bladder inter-communicate. 2. The Qi transformation function of the Yangming meridian is related to the control of dryness and dampness through the Qi transformation of "陽明不從標本, 從乎中." 3. The Qi transformation function of the Shaoyang meridian is related to the Life-Fire function of the Triple Energizer-Gallbladder-Pericardium coalition through "少陽屬腎." 4. The Qi transformation function of the Taiyang meridian refers to the Heart Fire nurturing the Spleen Earth by creating 膏油 through veins. 5. The Qi transformation function of the Shaoyin meridian is related to the controlling of the Nutrient Qi(營氣) and Defense Qi(衛氣) through '心主血脈, 腎主元氣.' 6. The Qi transformation function of the Jueyin meridian is related to the ability of 和風 which results from '陰盡陽生' to harmonize and control the balance of Water Coldness(水冷) and Fire Heat(火熱). Conclusions : Tang's Qi Transformation Theory of the Six Meridians is his key theory explained from the perspective of Qi transformation of disease in the six meridians of "Shanghanlun", closely related to basic theories such as theory of Zang form(臟象學說), Opening-Closing-Pivot(關闔樞), Inter-communication of Zangfu(臟腑相通), the Twelve Meridians(十二經脈) of East Asian Medicine.

  • Following conclusions about Taeyang meridian and Taeyang type were obtained through studies with reference to the books of ${\ll}$Donguibogam${\gg}$, ${\ll}$Hwangjaenaegyung${\gg}$, and ${\ll}$Special Lectures of Master Jisan on Medical cases${\gg}$ . Park noticed that there was difference in the development of 12 meridians among the individuals and tried to apply it in the diagnosis and the treatment of the disease, thereby creating the theory of the six meridian types. The literal basis is assumed to a phrase in ${\ll}$YoungChu GyungMaek${\gg}$ , ‘人經不同 絡脈異所別也’. Taeyang meridian runs through the back of the human body. The concept of TaeYang includes surface, starting point, diffusion of Yang Gi, and emission. Small intestine meridian of hand Taeyang manages the liquid and Bladder meridian of foot Taeyang manages the muscle. There is much flow of blood and less of Gi in Taeyang meridian which makes the connection to hair, flesh, liquid, muscle and vessel. Taeyang conceals and condenses objects because it belongs to Hansu according to division of Six atmospheric influences and to the winter. The articulation is stiff and urination and elimination are abnormal when disease occurs in this meridian. The pathology of Taeyang meridian would be the invasion of outer filthy Gi affecting the Bladder meridian of foot Taeyang which then again makes Kidney meridian of foot Soeum sick. The two meridians compose the outer part and the inner part of th body. The bladder itself becomes sick sometimes. The condition of less Gi in Taeyang meridian can easily result in the shortage of Gi, and much blood makes the person to have a lofty ideal or to have capricious behavior.

  • The Theory of Meridian can be classified into early form of pre- and present form of after-. The representative early form of meridian is Eleven Meridians in Mawangdui scrolls(馬王堆帛書) which use Six Qi Diagnosis(六氣辨證). because it did not adopt Visceral Pattern Identification(臟腑辨證). The present form of meridian is Twelve Meridians of . It has developed to investigate relations between Visceral and disease with Five Phase Theory. Analyzing the name of the Six Meridians in the Shanghanlun(傷寒論)On Cold Damage, there are no hands, feet and visceral signs. and it is almost identical to Eleven Meridians in Mawangdui scrolls. According to , Eleven Meridians use only Six Foot Meridians(足六經) to classify diseases. This fact was applied identically to the Six Meridians in the Shanghanlun. Therefore many doctors, especially Hanzhihe(韓祗和) and Zhangzhicong(張志聰) mentioned that "I have never seen a book on Shanghanlun discuss about Hand Meridians(手經)."

  • In order to clarify spatial meaning of Meridian and Collateral theory(經絡學說) within the human body. Meridian Divergence(經別) was studied mainly on "Miraculous Pivot(靈樞) - Meridian Divergence section(經別篇)". Furthermore, the meaning of Meridian Divergence(經別) was investigated based on Symbolic Mathematical Study(象數學). Firstly, Meridian divergence(經別) is associated with brain and Viscera and Bowels(臟腑) which are located in the Central Palace(中宮, Zhong Gong). It draws that Meridian Divergence(經別) is a theory based on Nine Palace(九宮, Jiugong), the spatial theory of Symbolic Mathematical Study(象數學). In this system, Viscera and Bowels(臟腑) were included in Meridian and Collateral(經絡). Secondly, the Central Palace(中宮, Zhong Gong) imparts functionality to Nine Palace(九宮, Jiu Gong). Therefore, brain and Viscera and Bowels(臟腑) in Central Palace(中宮, Zhong Gong) supply Qi and Blood(氣血) to whole Meridian and Collateral(經絡) and also control each Meridian and Collateral(經絡) through Twelve Meridian Divergences(十二經別). Meridian and Collateral Theory(經絡學說) is the theory of Body space. The basic theory of Twelve Meridian Vessels(十二經脈), Three Yin and Three Yang(三陰三陽) signifies six areas of human body space. And Fifteen Collateral Vessels(十五絡脈) connect the six areas of the Twelve Meridian Vessles(十二經脈) through Six Harmonies(六合, liu He). In addition, Meridian Divergence(經別) is also based on Nine Palace(九宮, Jiu Gong). Thus, Meridian and Collateral(經絡) classifies and organically integrates the human body space that is filled with Qi and Blood(氣血) by applying the theories of Symbolic Mathematical Study(象數學). Recently presented Morphogenetic field hypothesis resembles Meridian and Collateral theory(經絡學說). However Meridian and Collateral theory(經絡學說) is considered to be the substantive concept that has relation to treatments based on Meridian points(經穴) which contain the spatial information of Meridian and Collateral theory(經絡學說).

  • Objective : Zhang, Zhongjing(張仲景)'s Sanghanlun(傷寒論) is based on Six-channels system(六經) to classified a disease. But the notion of Six-channels system seems to be a very various angles. For example, Meridian and collateral theory(經絡說), Viscera and Bowels theory(臟腑說), Grade theory(段階說), Surface theory(地面說), Symptoms theory(症候群說), Six-disease theory(六病說), Eight principle pattern theory(八綱說) and all the rest of it. Above all things Meridian and collateral theory was very frequently quoted to explain the Six-channels system(六經). But it's true notion is not restrict to a meridian vessel(經脈). Method : I will try to describe the Sanghanlun's Greater yang disease(太陽病) through the Ke-qin(柯琴)'s Taiyangbingjie(太陽病解), and I would like to point out that the existing perception that Greater yang(太陽) is connected with Bladder meridian(足太陽膀胱經) is wrong. Result : Ke-qin's Taiyangbingjie explained the greater yang disease was connected with Heart(yang within yang), which was located in the top half and the outer layer of the body. In addition to the presence of the diaphragm or lungs are involved with. Conclusion : Practical meaning of greater yang disease is not connect with Bladder meridian, but it is related to the Heart and Lung for maintain the Nutrient and defense circulation (營衛循環).

  • Objective and Methods: This study examined Cheng Guopeng (程國彭)'s understanding of Shanghan Disease (傷寒病) through <Yixue xinwu (醫學心悟)>, created tables based on this, and these tables were compared with <Shiyong zhongyi neike biaodian (實用中醫內科表典)>'s table on Six Meridian Pattern Identification (六經辨證). Results and Conclusion: 1. <Yixue xinwu> and <Shiyong zhongy neike biaodian> were mostly similar regarding the pathology and the Six Meridian Pattern Identification of Shanghan Disease. However, <Shiyong zhongyi neike biaodian> selected terms that encompass internal medical diseases rather than terms that refer only to infectious diseases. 2. About Taiyang meridian disease (太陽 經病), <Yixue xinwu> recognized the existence of Wen bing (溫病) and Re bing (熱病), but did not regard them as True Shanghan Disease (正傷寒), and differentially diagnosed them as Similar Shanghan Disease (類傷寒). 3. About Yangming meridian disease (陽明 經病), <Yixue xinwu> understood this as a meridian transmitted heat-syndrome in the interior (傳經 裏熱證), and created a new Radix Puerariae Decoction (葛根湯). This prescription has the same name as the <Shanghanlun (傷寒論)>, but it has a different drug composition and indications. 4. About three-In meridian disease (3陰 經病), <Yixue xinwu> always divided it into two categories: meridian transmitted heat-syndrome in the interior (傳經 裏熱證) and meridian stroked cold-syndrome in the interior (直中 裏寒證). However, <Shiyong zhongyi neike biaodian> described Taiin disease (太陰病) as Spleen-stomach deficiency cold-syndrome (脾胃虛寒證). This means that meridian transmitted heat-syndrome in the interior (傳經 裏熱證) does not exist among Taiin disease.
