  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of trunk-forearm supported sitting on trunk flexion angle, trunk extensor fatigue and seat contact pressure. Background: The relationship between sitting posture and musculoskeletal disorders of the trunk extensor fatigue and seat contact pressure has been documented. The trunk-forearm support type ergonomic chair was devised from the fact that trunk-forearm support has been reported to reduce trunk extensor activity and discomfort. Method: Using three different sitting postures, upright ($P_1$), trunk-forearm supported ($P_2$) and normal sitting ($P_3$), six healthy subjects participated in the study. Motion capture system was used to collect head and trunk flexion angle, and surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to collect myoelectric signal of upper trapezius, lower trapezius, erector spinae, multifidus, and pressure mat system was used to measure seat contact pressure. Results: When trunk and forearm were supported by the ergonomic chair, higher head flexion angle showed upright > trunk-forearm supported > normal in order, and muscle fatigue showed less than upright and normal sitting. Mean seat contact pressure decreased 19% than upright sitting. But muscle fatigue was not affected by each condition. Conclusion: Trunk-forearm supported sitting of the ergonomic chair showed positive effect in respect of trunk and head flexion angle, trunk extensor fatigue, seat contact pressure. To acquire comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of the ergonomic chair, further studies such as anatomical effects from measurement of external applied loading effect to the body from interface pressure analysis are required. Application: The results of the publishing trend analysis might help physiological effects of trunk-forearm support type chair.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of wearing an immediate vibration feedback device at the lumbar region on the spine angle in a sitting position. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The subjects were 28 healthy university students who were randomized to three interventions. Each condition (A: in a normal chair with an immediate feedback device, B: on the gym ball, C: in a normal chair) spent 10 minutes watching the video, and the order of the experiments was randomized, and the measurements were taken consecutively. Results: The results showed significant differences in cervical and thoracic angles between conditions and time. Post hoc tests showed no difference at 1 minute, but significant differences at 5 and 10 minutes. Conclusions: In conclusion, all angles increased over time in all conditions, but the condition of wearing an immediate vibration feedback device with a lower increase was more useful in maintaining spinal angles than the other two conditions. This study suggests that immediate vibration feedback devices may be an alternative to prevent the loss of spinal angle in occupations and environments with prolonged sedentary postures, and further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of prolonged application.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effect of the degree of neck flexion on the muscle activity of the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles in the sitting position. Methods: Twenty-five healthy young adults participated in this study. The study was designed to compare the muscle activity of the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles according to the neck flexion angle under the three conditions (neutral position, 15° neck flexion, and 45° neck flexion) in the sitting position. During the neck position of three conditions in sitting, the electromyography (EMG) data (% maximum voluntary isometric contraction) of the muscles were recorded using a wireless surface EMG system. Results: The muscle activity of the upper trapezius muscle and the sternocleidomastoid muscles showed a significant difference according to the three-neck position conditions (p<0.05), and in the post-hoc test results, both muscles showed significant differences between the neutral position and 15° flexion, the neutral position and 45° flexion, and the 15° flexion and 45° flexion, respectively. Conclusion: The load on the muscles around the neck and shoulders increased as the neck flexion angle increased. This suggests that performing various daily activities and tasks with the neck as neutral as possible can prevent muscle fatigue or musculoskeletal disorders.

  • This paper is to clarify a thermal physiological index that can account for the effects of local thermal environment. For this purpose two young female subjects exposing themselves to the above while sitting on a chair, sitting on the floor and lying on the floor were measured. These three representative postures accompanied the different contact surface areas, thereby the heat conduction rate between the floor and subject was quantitatively measured for each posture. It made the present study deal with the effect of heat conduction concerning the modified mean skin temperature and finally propose new weighting coefficients for the mean skin temperature calculation based on the Hardy & DuBois' formulas. In order to verify the proposed model, the experiment was carried out using a floor heating system. The comparison between the experimental result and prediction revealed that the proposed model should be about 10% more accurate than the conventional one in the case of lying on the floor which the heat conduction effect becomes important.

  • Pressure-induced decubitus is a serious disease among the elderly people. Interface pressure occluding vascular perfusion is known to be a cause of decubitus. Therefore, it is essential to quantify the relationship between vascular perfusion and interface pressure among the elderly people. Nine elderly normal people ($57.8{\pm}5.6\;years,\;63.3{\pm}7.0kg,\;1.68{\pm}0.05m$) were participated. Pressure was applied on the ischial tuberosity in the sitting posture from 0mmHg to 135mmHg as capillary vascular perfusion was recorded. The average interface pressure to occlude vascular perfusion under the ischial tuberosity is 120mmHg. Vascular perfusion values at the capillary occlusion is often lower than 60% of the vascular perfusion at 15mmHg. Higher sampling number is required to have more accurate results.

  • Grip strength is a very important basic data for ergonomic design of hand tools, grips, handles and etc.. Excessive grip strength is contineously exerted to handle the machines or tools, it might cause a musculoskeletal disorder such as cumulative trauma disorders. Capal tunnel syndrome is a typical nerve disorder anomg CTDs. In this paper we have measured the grip strength under sitting and standing posture for Korean adults ; 113 male and 105 female aged from 20' to the above 50' . And this paper performed statistical analysis for driving out characteristics between grip strength and anthropometric data. The results are as follows ; (1) The maximum girp strength is exerted under standing posture with the elbow in full extension(180 .deg. ) for both of male and female (2) There is significant difference in posture, sex and right left hand (3) Grip strength decreases with age for male, but it traces an inverted U curve for female (4) Grip strength has a correlation with age, weight, height, BSA, forearm length, hand length, thickness of wrist, circumference of wrist and breadth of wrist for male

  • Purpose: Differences in scapular kinematics and muscle activity appear in the forward head and rounded shoulder posture (FHRSP). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the following effects according to different postures on scapular kinematics and muscle activity around scapular region in individuals with and without FHRSP during overhead reaching task. Methods: Thirty pain-free subjects with/without FHRSP participated in this study. All subjects were positioned into three positions: habitual head posture (HHP), self-perceived ideal head posture (SIHP) and therapist-perceived neutral head posture (TNHP). Muscle activities of upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT) and serratus anterior (SA) were measured during overhead reaching task. Results: Muscle activity of trapezius muscle (UT and LT) during HHP was significantly higher than SIHP and TNHP in FHRSP group (p<0.05), but there was no difference between SIHP and TNHP. SA also significantly increased muscle activity in HHP more than SIHP and TNHP in FHRSP group (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between SIHP and TNHP. In Non-FHRSP group, although there was a tendency of different muscle activities among three postures, it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This result demonstrates that muscle activity associated with overhead reaching task is increased in HHP which affects the scapular kinematics and SIHP contributes changed scapular kinematics and proper recruitment of muscle activity in FHRSP similarly to TNHP.
