EquiMar (Equitable Testing and Evaluation of Marine Energy Extraction Devices in terms of Performance, Cost and Environmental Impact) is one of the first round of energy projects under the European Commissions 7th Framework Programme (FP7). The three year EquiMar project aims to deliver a suite of protocols for the evaluation of both wave and tidal converters, harmonizing testing and evaluation procedures across the wide range of available devices, accelerating adoption through technology matching and improving the understanding of both environmental and economic impacts associated with the deployment of devices. The EquiMar protocols will cover site selection, initial design, scaling up of designs, the deployment of arrays and environmental impact assessment as well as economic issues. EquiMar will build on existing protocols, e.g. UK DTI Marine Renewables Development Fund (MRDF) protocols for wave and tidal energy, and engage with international standards setting activities, e.g. IEC TC114.
Background: By examining the safety issues involved in on-site training sessions conducted at specialized vocational high schools, and by analyzing the effects of non-destructive testing (NDT) safety training, this study aims to contribute to ensuring the general safety of high school students. Materials and Methods: Students who expressed an interest in participation were surveyed regarding current NDT training practices, as well as NDT safety training. A total of 361 students from 4 schools participated in this study; 37.7% (136 students) were from the Seoul metropolitan area and 62.3% (225 students) were from other areas. Results and Discussion: Of the respondents, 2.2% (8 students) reported having engaged in NDT. As a result of safety training, statistically significant improvements were observed in most areas, except for individuals with previous NDT experience. The areas of improvement included safety awareness, acquisition of knowledge, subjective knowledge levels, objective knowledge levels, and adjustments to existing personal attitudes. Conclusion: Even at absolutely necessary observation-only training sessions, it is crucial that sufficient safety training and additional safety measures be adequately provided.

The present study is conducted to identify a better design and optimal number of Francis runner blades for sediment laden high head micro hydropower site, Tara Khola in the Baglung district of Nepal. The runner is designed with in-house code and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed to evaluate the performance with three configurations; 11, 13 and 17 numbers of runner blades. The three sets of runners were also investigated for the sediment erosion tendency. The runner with 13 blades shows better performance at design as well as in variable discharge conditions. 96.2% efficiency is obtained from the runner with 13 blades at the design point, and the runners with 17 and 11 blades have 88.25% and 76.63% efficiencies respectively. Further, the runner with 13 blades has better manufacturability than the runner with 17 blades as it has long and highly curved blade with small gaps between the blades, but it comes with 65% more erosion tendency than in the runner with 17 blades.
A lack of study on the dynamic tensile strengths of Sn-based solder joints at high strain rates was the motivation for the present study. A modified miniature Charpy impact testing machine instrumented with an impact sensor was built to quantitatively evaluate the dynamic impact strength of a solder joint under tensile impact loading. This study evaluated the tensile strength of lead-free solder ball joints at strain rates from $1.8{\times}10^3s^{-1}$ and $8.5{\times}10^3s^{-1}$. The maximum tensile strength of the solder ball joint decreases as the load speed increases in the testing range. This tensile strength represented that of the interface because of the interfacial fracture site. The tensile strengths of solder joints between Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and copper substrate were between 21.7 MPa and 8.6 MPa in the high strain range.
Traditional standards and specifications for concrete have largely been prescriptive, (or prescription-based), and can sometimes hinder innovation and in particular the use of more environmentally friendly concretes by requiring minimum cement contents and SCM replacement levels. In December 2004, the Canadian CSA A23.1-04 standard was issued which made provisions (a) for high-volume SCM concretes, (b) added new performance requirements for concrete, and (c) clearly outlined the requirements and responsibilities for use in performance-based concrete specifications. Also, in December 2003, the CSA A3000 Hydraulic Cement standard was revised. It (a) reclassified the types of cements based on performance requirements, with both Portland and blended cements meeting the same physical requirements, (b) allows the use of performance testing for assessing sulphate resistance of cementitious materials combinations, (c) includes an Annex D, which allows performance testing of new or non-traditional supplementary cementing materials. From a review of international concrete standards, it was found that one of the main concerns with performance specifications has been the lack of tests, or lack of confidence in existing tests, for judging all relevant performance concerns. Of currently used or available test methods for both fresh, hardened physical, and durability properties, it was found that although there may be no ideal testing solutions, there are a number of practical and useful tests available. Some of these were adopted in CSA A23.1-04, and it is likely that new performance tests will be added in future revisions. Other concerns with performance standards are the different perspectives on the point of testing for performance. Some concrete suppliers may prefer processes for both pre-qualifying the plant, and specific mixtures, followed only with testing only 'end-of-chute' fresh properties on-site. However, owners want to know the in-place performance of the concrete, especially with high-volume SCM concretes where placing and curing are important. Also, the contractor must be aware of, and share the responsibility for handling, constructability, curing, and scheduling issues that influence the in-place concrete properties.
A rockbolt is one of the most important reinforcement of on-site soil, as with the shotcrete and steel rib. The rockbolt by setting within the tunnel can prevent the deformation of the ground profile; furthermore it improves the structural behavior of soil and rock. In general, the rockbolt is mainly used with reinforced steel. However, steel pipe or the materials with the same strength can be used depending on the soil conditions, ground water outflow condition, and the surrounding of applying location. In Korea, most tunnel construction sites have used cement mortar or resin for steel reinforcement on the rock. Due to the ground water outflow in the construction site, the usability of steel reinforcement is poor and it requires curing time especially after installation. To improve exist above problems, this study introduces the development of a swelled steel pipe rockbolt, as well as presents the field testing and performance results.
For a given soil-contaminated site, a level of soil contamination is characterized and decisions on risk may be made from the risk assessment. The study evaluated critical design factors for the determination of sample size in the sampling design plan and the assessment of soil contaminant- leaching to groundwater. Two variables, the minimum relative detectable difference (T) and coefficient of variation (CV) were evaluated for the sample size determination. The minimum number of samples can be appropriately determined by CV under a T value greater than or equal to 0.2. Soil-contaminant leaching to groundwater was evaluated by using the Soil Screening Level equation of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Risk Based Screening Level equation of American Society for Testing and Materials, with the same input parameters. The groundwater concentrations estimated from soil contaminant concentrations were significantly affected by the Darcy velocity of groundwater and the organic content of soil.
The paper presents a monitoring system for the cooling of distribution transformers. The suggested system is controlled by a microcontroller scheme. The system is designed to control the oil temperature. It gives a solution to improve the cooling system by adding a number of fans especially for indoor transformers that are placed in badly-ventilated rooms. Also, the paper includes an alarm system with the possibility of tripping the transformer if it is necessary. The monitoring system consists of acquisition temperature sensor, and on-site unit. The hardware and software of the on-site unit are demonstrated with sufficient illustrations. Small prototype is constructed in the laboratory. Some laboratory experiments are carried out for examining the designed circuit by using Proteus Virtual System Modeling as well as for testing the prototype monitoring system. Concerning this research point, a study is carried out to evaluate the economic feasibility. The results are recorded and associated with many recommendations that may be valuable to electrical distribution (utility) companies.
In this paper, we described the basic elements(flowabiligy, fillingability, elapsed time, pumpability, no-vibrating effects, and etc.) required for the application and quality control of the super flowing concrete(SFC) in Top Down site. Also, manufactured sand and fly ash were used for investigating characteristics of SFC through various experiments(mix design, optimum mix condition) before placing the concrete in site. As a result of this project, the developed SFC shown high flowability and self-fillingability in the joint good enough for the requirement. Futhermore, inner uniformity of the no-vibrated concrete was verified by testing reformed space. Therefore, quality control and compressive strength(360kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) can be secured by using SFC even without vibrating.
