Improvments in Cost Reduction for Vacuum Sintering and Vacuum and Overpressure Sintering for Tungsten Carbides

  • In all larger hardmetal workshops furnaces for dewaxing, vacuum sintering or vacuum and overpressure sintering are today's standard. The furnace technology is well established. Equipment specifications such as operating overpressure, determine sintering cost, product quality, safety and reliability of the furnace and ultimately influence the competitiveness of the hard metal procucer in the global market. Essential furnace requirements are an efficient utilization of the furnace, an environmental friendly dewaxing system, high temperature uniformity, metallurgical treatment with process gases, as well as reduced cooling time by means of rapid cooling. Examples of reduced sintering costs are described achieved using a new design of vacuum sintering furnace with an improved rapid cooling device, cooling times are reduced by up to 45%. Additionally, a cost comparison of two different designs of vacuum overpressure sintering furnaces are included.

2xxx Al 합금계 혼합분말의 소결온도에 따른 소결거동 (Sintering Behavior of 2xxx Series Al alloys with Variation of Sintering Temperature)

  • Sintering behavior of 2xxx series Al alloy was investigated to obtain full densification and sound microstructure. The commercial 2xxx series Al alloy powder. AMB2712, was used as a starting powder. The mixing powder was characterized by using particle size analyzer, SEM and XRD. The optimum compacting pressure was 200 MPa, which was the starting point of the "homogeneous deformation" stage. The powder compacts were sintered at $550~630^{\circ}C$ after burn-off process at $400^{\circ}C$. Swelling phenomenon caused by transient liquid phase sintering was observed below $590^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature. At $610^{\circ}C$, sintering density was increased by effect of remained liquid phase. Further densification was not observed above $610^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was determined that the optimum sintering temperature of AMB2712 powder was $610^{\circ}C$.}C$.

분말 고속도공구강의 소결 조건에 따른 치밀화 거동연구 (The Effect of Sintering Parameters on the Densification Behavior of PM High Speed Steel)

  • The densification behavior during a sintering of M2 and T15 grade high speed steel powder compacts was reported. Sintered densities over 98% theoretical were achieved by a liquid phase sintering in vacuum for both grades. The optimum sintering temperature range where full densification could be achieved without excessive carbide coarsening and incipient melting was much narrower in M2 than in T15 grade. The sintering response was mainly affected by the type of carbides present. The primary carbides in M2 were identified as $M_6C$ type whereas those in T15 were MC type which provides wider sintering range. The addition of elemental carbon up to 0.3% lowered the optimum sintering temperature for both grades, but had little effect on expanding the sintering range and sintered structure.

(Nd, Dy)-Fe-B 분말의 소결특성 및 상변화 연구 (Sintering Behavior and Phase Analysis of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B Powder)

  • In this study, the sintering behavior of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B powder which fabricated by strip-casting was investigated with various sintering temperatures and holding times. The relative density over 99% could be obtained by both sintering at $1070^{\circ}C$ for 1h and sintering at $970^{\circ}C$ for 20h. The grain growth was observed in sintered specimen at $1050^{\circ}C$ compared to one at $970^{\circ}C$. The isothermal sintering process below $1000^{\circ}C$ led to suppress grain growth showing the improved magnetic properties. The phase transformation of Nd-rich was confirmed by X-ray diffraction pattern.

  • Si$_3$N$_4$powder with 2 wt% $Al_2$O$_3$and 6 wt% $Y_2$O$_3$additives was sintered by the gas pressure sintering (GPS) technique. The unlubricated wear behavior depending on sintering conditions such as sintering temperature, pressure, and sintering time was investigated. When the sintering temperature and time increased, the larger elongated grains were formed and the microstructural heterogeneity increased. When sintering pressure increased, grain growth, however, was impeded. Also, the wear properties depended on microstructure and friction coefficient were related to grain size. Based on the experimental results, the wear properties were associated with initial friction coefficients as well as mechanical properties including fracture toughness and flexural strength.

  • The master sintering curve (MSC) is derived from densification data over a range of heating rates and temperatures. To improve the accuracy, several modifications were proposed: multi-phase MSC for solid state sintering with phase changes, MSC for liquid phase sintering, and MSC with consideration of grain growth. The developed MSC models were applied to several material systems such as molybdenum, stainless steels, and tungsten heavy alloys (WHA), in order to evaluate the effect of compaction pressure, phase change, grain growth, and composition on densification, to classify regions having different sintering mechanism, and to help engineer design, optimize, and monitor sintering cycles.

  • Purpose: Densification and mechanical properties of dental zirconia ceramics were evaluated by different sintering methods. Materials and Methods: Y-TZP zirconia block(Kavo $Everest^{(R)}$ ZS blank, Kavo dental GmbH, Bismarckring, Germany) was used in this study. Sintering were performed in heat sintering furnace and microwave sintering furnace, and then experimented and analyzed on a change in densification according to the sintering time, a change in densification according to thickness, flexural strength and micro-structure in zirconia specimens. Results: Microwave sintering was very effective in considerable mechanical properties such as flexural strength and bulk density was drastically increased than conventional electric heating method. It is also shown that microwave sintering time was faster and more economical than common method to be present in qualities which equal or exceed. Conclusion: It will be important to seek the accurate sintering condition of dental zirconia by microwave sintering method and the continuous research is necessary for the study of relationship between sintering methods and mechanical properties.

직화소성법으로 제조된 인공골재의 특성 분석 (Characterization of artificial aggregates fabricated with direct sintering method)

  • 무기성 폐기물인 준설토를 원료로 인공골재를 제조함에 있어, 직화소성법을 이용하여 소성온도(1100 및 $1200^{\circ}C$)와 시간(10~60 min)을 변수로 하여 인공골재의 부피비중, 흡수율 그리고 미세구조를 제어하였다. 또한 직화소성과 기존에 발표된 승온소성의 방법 차이에 따른 인공골재의 물성을 비교 분석하였다. 직화소성 시, 소성온도가 $1100^{\circ}C$에서 $1200^{\circ}C$로 증가하면, 껍질의 두께가 증가함과 동시에 블랙 코어 부분의 기공크기가 증가하면서 골재의 부피비중이 1.0 이하를 나타내었다. 또한 같은 소성온도에서 소성시간이 증가할수록 블랙코어의 단면적이 감소하고, 껍질의 두께가 증가하면서 흡수율이 감소하였다. 부피비중 1.0 이하의 인공골재는 직화소성이나 승온소성으로 제조된 경우 모두 블랙 코어부분의 미세구조가 서로 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 반면, 껍질(shell)의 미세구조는 승온소성된 경우에 더 치밀한 구조를 나타냈으며, 따라서 직화소성된 골재의 흡수율이 상대적으로 높았다. 이로서 직화소성법은 세라믹 담체 또는 흡착제등에 적용될 인공골재 제조에 적합한 방법임을 알 수 있었다.

펄스전류활성소결법을 이용한 스퍼터링 타겟용 Cu-Mn 소결체 제조 및 특성평가 (Fabrication and Property Evaluation of Cu-Mn Compacts for Sputtering Target Application by a Pulsed Current Activated Sintering Method)

  • Cu-Mn compacts are fabricated by the pulsed current activated sintering method (PCAS) for sputtering target application. For fabricating the compacts, optimized sintering conditions such as the temperature, pulse ratio, pressure, and heating rate are controlled during the sintering process. The final sintering temperature and heating rate required to fabricate the target materials having high density are $700^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C/min$, respectively. The heating directly progresses up to $700^{\circ}C$ with a 3 min holding time. The sputtering target materials having high relative density of 100% are fabricated by employing a uniaxial pressure of 60 MPa and a sintering temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ without any significant change in the grain size. Also, the shrinkage displacement of the Cu-Mn target materials considerably increases with an increase in the pressure at sintering temperatures up to $700^{\circ}C$.

ZrB2-SiC 복합세라믹스의 미세구조와 기계적 물성에 미치는 소결 공정, 첨가제 효과 (The Effect of Sintering Processes and Additives on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of ZrB2-SiC Composite Ceramics)

  • This paper reports the effect of sintering processes and additives on the microstructures and mechanical properties of $ZrB_2$-SiC composite ceramics. We fabricated sintered bodies of $ZrB_2$-20 vol.% SiC with or without sintering additive, such as C or $B_4C$, densified by spark plasma sintering as well as hot pressing. While almost full densification was achieved regardless of sintering processes or sintering additives, significant grain growth was observed in the case of spark plasma sintering, especially with $B_4C$. With sintered bodies, mechanical properties, such as flexural strength and Vickers hardness, were also examined.
