  • High-quality Sr-ferrite sintered magnets have been studied by using mill scale added SrCO$_3$ and oxidents before oxidation process. The pre-added SrCO$_3$ powders were improved the degree of oxidation and crush of mill scale and the magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite sintered magnets. The small added NaNO$_3$ oxidant was also highly improved the degree of oxidation and crush of mill scale and the magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite sintered magnets; 3805 G of remanent flux density, 3240 Oe of intrinsic coercivity, and 3.45 MGOe of maximum energy product.

  • Nd-Fe-B type powder was sintered using spark plasma sintering method. Fabricated compact sintered at the temperature of $700\;^{\circ}C$, is found to be a composite magnet with Nd-Fe-Co-B and ${\alpha}-Fe$. The compact sintered at $700\;^{\circ}C$ shows slightly low coercivity and large remanent magnetization comparing to the compact sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ due to the formation of ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase, resulting in the large maximum energy product. Maximum energy product tends to decrease with decreasing thickness of sintered compacts below 0.5 mm in thickness.

The development of Dy free MAGFINE and its applications to Motors

  • The NdFeB magnet can be classified into the sintered magnet and bonded magnet. The former has superior magnet characteristics but the degree of freedom in shape is highly restricted, whereas the latter has a high degree of freedom, but its magnet characteristics are inferior to the former. When a NdFeB magnet is used at the elevated temperature, part of Nd must be replaced with a high priced Dy to increase its coercive force. For these reasons, a Dy free and high performance NdFeB bonded magnet is desired strongly. The author successfully developed a Dy free NdFeB anisotropic bonded magnet based on discovery of new phenomena called as d-HDDR reaction and its mass production process such as a thermally balanced hydrogen reaction furnace, micro capsuled powder, compression molding / injection molding under magnetic field, magnetic die and so on. Applied to DC brush seat motor for automotive use, the motor has become 50% small in size and weight. The commercialization of a half sized motor for automotive use has been realized up to the market share of 30%. At present, its commercialization is extending to various types of motors such as power tool, ABS motor, wiper motor, window motor, electric bike power motor, and compressor motor. It is expected that the applications will be increasingly enlarged to EV motor, wind generator, EPS motor, washing machine, and glass cutting machine. This innovative technology has realized Dy free high performance magnet and mudt make big contribution to not only rare element strategies but also energy conservation.

미세구조 제어를 통한 (Nd,Dy)-Fe-B 소결자석의 보자력 증가 (The Coercivity Enhancement of (Nd,Dy)-Fe-B Sintered Magnet by Microstructure Control)

  • Sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets are widely used in many fields such as motors, generators, actuators, microwaves and so on due to their excellent magnetic properties. Many researchers have shown that the Nd-rich phase was essentially important for high magnet properties. In this study, we focused on controlling of the Nd-rich phase to enhance magnetic properties by the cyclic sintering process. Nd-Fe-B based sintered magnets were prepared by isothermal sintering and cyclic sintering processes. Magnetic properties and microstructure of the magnets were investigated. The coercivity was enhanced from 21.2 kOe to 23.27 kOe after 10 cycles of the sintering. The Nd-rich phase was effectively penetrated into the grain boundary between the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains by the cyclic sintering.

  • Axial pressing process를 이용하여 31RE-68TM-1B(RE : 희토류원소, TM: 3d천이금속) 조성을 갖는 소결자석을 제조함에 있어서 Casting process와 Lubricant 변화에 따른 잔류자속밀도 변화를 조사하였다. 출발합금 제조방법으로서 Strip casting process는 $\alpha$-Fe 편석없이 미세하고, 균일한 microstructure를 얻기에 용이한 잇점이 있었으며, Jet mill 이후 균일한 입도의 분말을 얻을 수 있었다. 또한, Jet mill 전후에 적절한 분말 혹은 무수알콜과 같은 Lubricant를 첨가함으로써 잔류자속밀도를 향상시킬 수 있었다. 본 실험에서는 Strip casting 및 분말 Lubrican인 Zn-st(Zinc stearate)에 첨가에 의한 분말입도분포 개선효과와 무수알콜에 의한 배향율 향상효과를 접목하여 잔류자속밀도, 보자력 및 최대자기에너지적이 각각 13.1 kG, 13.5 kOe 및 39.5 MGOe인 경자기특성이 얻어졌다.

High Coercive Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets for High Temperature Application

  • Various sintered magnets containing $28{\sim}31\;wt%$ Nd and $0{\sim}7\;wt%$ Dy were evaluated for coercivity and irreversible flux loss as a preliminary study to develop highly-coercive, high-temperature magnets that can be applied for driving motors in a hybrid vehicle. The sintered magnets were prepared in sequence of strip casting, HD treatment, jet milling, magnetic field pressing, sintering and post-annealing. Increasing Dy content and adjusting post-annealing temperature monotonically increased coercivity of magnets from about 14 kOe to 30 kOe. A magnet containing 28 wt% Nd and 7 wt% Dy exhibits a $(BH)_{max}$+$_i{H_c}$ value of almost 64. This is very close to what the automobile industry considers as the minimum value (65) for a hybrid vehicle system. Moreover, irreversible flux loss of the magnet was about 3% at $200^{\circ}C$, which is well less than the allowable limit (5%) to a driving motor in hybrid vehicles.

  • Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets have been utilized on various industrial fields such as electric vehicles, generator, robots with actuator, etc, due to their outstanding magnetic properties even 10 times better than conventional magnets. Recently, there are many researches that report magnetic properties improved by controlling microstructure through adjusting alloying elements or conducting various processing. Especially, post-sintering annealing (PSA) can significantly improve the coercivity by modifying the distribution and morphology of Nd-rich phase which formed at grain boundaries. In this study, Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were subjected to primary heat treatment followed by secondary heat treatment at 460℃, 500℃, and 540℃ to investigate the changes in microstructure and magnetic properties with the secondary heat treatment temperature. EBSD analysis was conducted to compare anisotropic characteristics. Through the SEM and TEM observation for analyzing the morphology and distribution of Nd-rich phase, we investigated the relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties of sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets.
