Crack on concrete surface allows more rapid penetration of chlorides. Crack width and depth are dominant parameters for chloride behavior, however their effects on chloride penetration are difficult to quantify. In the present work, the previous anisotropic (1-D) model on chloride diffusion in concrete with single crack is improved considering crack shape and roughness. In the previous model, parallel-piped shape was adopted for crack shape in steady-state condition. The previous model with single crack is improved considering wedge shape of crack profile and roughness. For verifying the proposed model, concrete samples for nuclear power plant are prepared and various crack widths are induced 0.0 to 1.2 mm. The chloride diffusion coefficients in steady-state condition are evaluated and compared with simulation results. The proposed model which can handle crack shape and roughness factor is evaluated to decrease chloride diffusion and can provide more reasonable results due to reduced area of crack profile. The roughness effect on diffusion is evaluated to be 10-20% of reduction in chloride diffusion.
In this paper, an algorithm based on a model analysis of the online calculation of the root-mean-square (RMS) value of welding current for single-phase AC resistance spot welding (RSW) was developed. The current is highly nonlinear and typically non-sinusoidal, which makes the measuring and controlling actions difficult. Though some previous methods focused on this issue, they were so complex that they could not be effectively used in general cases. The electrical model of a single-phase AC RSW was analyzed, and then an algorithm for online calculation of the RMS value of the welding current was presented. The description includes two parts, a model-dependent part and a model-independent part. Using a previous work about online measurement of the power factor angle, the first part can be solved. For the second part, although the solution of the governing equation can be directly obtained, a lot of CPU time must be consumed due to the fact that it involves a lot of complex calculations. Therefore, a neural network was employed to simplify the calculations. Finally, experimental results and a corresponding analysis showed that the proposed algorithm can obtain the RMS values with a high precision while consuming less time when compared to directly solving the equations.

The power loss of large-capacity systems using single-phase inverters has attracted considerable attention. In this study, optimal switching sequence model prediction control at a low switching frequency is proposed to reduce the power loss in a high-power inverter system, and a compensation method that can be utilized for model prediction control is developed to reduce errors in accordance with sampling values. When a three-level, single-phase inverter using a switching frequency of 600 Hz and a sampling frequency of 12 kHz is adopted, the power factor is improved from 0.95 to 0.99 through 3 kW active power control. The performance of the controller is also verified.
The main purpose of this study is to discuss the design wind loads for the structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans. First, wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points on dome models in a wind tunnel. Then, the dynamic response of several models is analyzed in the time domain, using the pressure data obtained from the wind tunnel experiment. The nodal displacements and the resultant member stresses are computed at each time step. The results indicate that the dome's dynamic response is generally dominated by such vibration modes that contribute to the static response significantly. Furthermore, the dynamic response is found to be almost quasi-static. Then, a series of quasi-static analyses, in which the inertia and damping terms are neglected, is made for a wide range of the dome's geometry. Based on the results, a discussion is made of the design wind load. It is found that a gust effect factor approach can be used for the load estimation. Finally, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor and a simple model of the pressure coefficient distribution are provided.

In a single-phase power factor correction (PFC), the standard cascaded control algorithm using a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller has two main drawbacks: an inability to track sinusoidal current reference and low harmonic compensation capability. These drawbacks cause poor power factor and high harmonics in grid current. To improve these drawbacks, this paper uses a proportional-integral-derivative-resonant (PIDR) controller which combines a type-III PID with proportional-resonant (PR) controllers in the PFC. Based on a small signal model of the PFC, the type-III PID controller was implemented taking into account the bandwidth and phase margin of the PFC system. To adopt the PR controllers, the spectrum of inductor current of the PFC was analyzed in frequency domain. The hybrid PIDR controller were simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC and implemented on a 3 kW PFC prototype hardware. The performance results of the hybrid PIDR controller were compared with those of an individual type-III PID controller. Both controllers were implemented successfully in the single-phase PFC. The total harmonic distortion of the proposed controller were much better than those of the individual type-III PID controller.
A numerical investigation of single phase heat and flow characteristics in circular tubes with a single set of spiral micro fins was performed with varying geometrical parameters like fin height, spiral angle, and number of fins. The properties of $40^{\circ}C$ water was used as a working fluid to simulate a condenser and the RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model was adopted. Calculation results were obtained in fully developed turbulent flow with constant surface heat flux boundary condition. Relative terms were introduced to investigate the substitution effect of conventional smooth tubes. The dimensionless terms were the heat transfer enhancement factor, the pressure drop penalty factor, and the efficiency index. Additionally, a numerical optimization was carried out to maximize thermal performance with the concept of the robust design. A statistical analysis showed that fin height interacts with number of fins and spiral angle.
Objective: This study examines the genetic factors influencing the phenotypes (four economic traits:oleic acid [C18:1], monounsaturated fatty acids, carcass weight, and marbling score) of Hanwoo. Methods: To enhance the accuracy of the genetic analysis, the study proposes a new statistical model that excludes environmental factors. A statistically adjusted, analysis of covariance model of environmental and genetic factors was developed, and estimated environmental effects (covariate effects of age and effects of calving farms) were excluded from the model. Results: The accuracy was compared before and after adjustment. The accuracy of the best single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in C18:1 increased from 60.16% to 74.26%, and that of the two-factor interaction increased from 58.69% to 87.19%. Also, superior SNPs and SNP interactions were identified using the multifactor dimensionality reduction method in Table 1 to 4. Finally, high- and low-risk genotypes were compared based on their mean scores for each trait. Conclusion: The proposed method significantly improved the analysis accuracy and identified superior gene-gene interactions and genotypes for each of the four economic traits of Hanwoo.

To understand environmental paths of the transport and accumulation of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), a single cell multimedia fate model has been constructed and evaluated. The EDCs of concern were PAHs, Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs), PCBs, Alkyl phenols, and phthalates. An evaluation model was designed for the multimedia distribution, including air, water, soil, sediment and vegetation. This model was verified using reported values and via monitoring data. Based on collected data, the distribution trends of EDCs with respect to environmental media were analyzed. Those results have applied to the model for the prediction of the spatial and temporal distribution of EDCs in Seoul. Especially, phenol compound, phthalates, PAHs, PCBs and organochlorine pesticides were estimated and the model was verified. This model was successfully conducted to environmental media, such as air (vapor and suspended particles), soils (forest soil, bare soil, and cement-concrete covered soil), water (dissolved and suspended solids), sediment, trees (deciduous and coniferous). The discrepancies between the model prediction and the measured data are approximately within or near a factor of 10 for the PAHs of three rings through that of six rings, implying that multimedia distribution of the PAHs could be predicted with a factor of 10. Concerning about the air equilibrium may be assumed, a fugacity at steady state is similar in all environmental media. Considering the uncertainties of this model, the use of equilibrium models may be sufficient for assessing chemical fates. In this study, a suggestion was made that modeling and estimation of chemicals in environmental multimedia be rigorously evaluated using the measured flux data. In addition, these data should be obtained, for example, from the precise and standardized inventory of the target chemicals. The model (EDC Seoul) will be refined in an on-going research effort and will be used to support decision-making concerning the management of EDCs.
The aerodynamic and aero-elastic model tests of the China''s highest cooling tower has been carried out in the TJ-3 Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of Tongji University. By adopting a scanivalve system, the external wind pressure is firstly measured on $12{\times}36$ taps for a single tower, two and four grouped towers under the condition of both smooth flow and the boundary layer due to surrounding geographic and building topography. The measurements of internal wind pressure distribution of $6{\times}36$ taps are taken for a single tower under the various ventilation ratios ranging from 0% to 100% of stuffing layers located at the bottom of the tower. In the last stage, the wind tunnel tests with an aero-elastic model are carefully conducted to determine wind-induced displacements at six levels (each with eight points) with laser displacement sensors. According to the measurement results of wind pressure or vibration response, the extreme aerodynamic loading values of the single or grouped towers are accordingly analyzed based on probability correlation technique.
This paper presents an efficient and accurate coupled beam model for piezoelectric bimorphs based on improved first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model combines the equivalent single layer approach for the mechanical displacements and a layerwise modeling for the electric potential. General electric field function is proposed to reasonably approximate the through-the-thickness distribution of the applied and induced electric potentials. Layerwise defined shear correction factor (k) accounting for nonlinear shear strain distribution is introduced into both the shear stress resultant and the electric displacement integration. Analytical solutions for free vibrations and forced response under electromechanical loads are obtained for the simply supported piezoelectric bimorphs with series or parallel arrangement, and the numerical results for various length-to-thickness ratios are compared with the exact two-dimensional piezoelasticity solution. Excellent predictions with low error estimates of local and global responses as well as the modal frequencies are observed.
