  • This paper proposes the Pareto artificial life algorithm for a multi-objective function optimization problem. The artificial life algorithm for a single objective function optimization problem is improved through incorporating the new method to estimate the fitness value fur a solution and the Pareto list to memorize and to improve the Pareto optimal set. The proposed algorithm is applied to the optimum design of a Journal bearing which has two objective functions. The Pareto front and the optimal solution set for the application are reported to present the possible solutions to a decision maker or a designer.

  • This paper is concerned with the optimal control of dynamic expansion and operation of a single capacity under deterministic demand. Three cases of financing mode are considered : unlimited borrowing, debt aversion, and self financing. Using the net revenue as the objective function, the optimal paths of production and investment are analytically derived.

  • Objective: Reconstruction methods, including stent-assisted coiling, multiple telescopic stents, and flow diverters, are preferred modalities for the treatment of unruptured vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs). We aimed to compare the clinical outcomes between two reconstructive flow diversion techniques: single flow diverter (FD) device and multiple telescopic stenting (TS). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 39 patients with unruptured VADAs. Of these, 17 patients were treated with multiple TS and 22 with a single FD device. Aneurysm characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: All aneurysms included in this study successfully achieved flow diversion, regardless of the treatment modality and duration. However, the mean procedure duration to complete the diversion was shorter in the FD group. Subgroup analysis in TS group showed that there were no significant clinical differences between the low-profile visualized intraluminal support and Enterprise stents, except for the mean procedure duration. Conclusions: Both the single FD and multiple TS methods showed excellent angiographic and clinical outcomes in the treatment of unruptured VADAs. However, single FD required a shorter procedure duration and was associated with faster achievement of complete flow diversion.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop a multi-objective fuzzy optimum design program of steel structures and to verify that the multi-objective fuzzy optimum design is more reasonable than the single objective optimum design in real structural design. In the optimization formulation, the objective functions are both total weight and deflection. The design constraints are derived from the ultimate strength of service ability requirement of AISC-LRFD specification. The structural analysis was performed by the finite element method and also considered geometric non-linearity. The different importance of optimum criteria were reflected with two weighting methods ; membership weighting method and objective weighting method. Thus, designers could choose rational optimum solution of structures with application of two weighting methods.

  • The application of the theoretical model to real assembly lines has been one of the biggest challenges for researchers and industrial engineers. There should be some realistic approach to achieve the conflicting objectives on real systems. Therefore, in this paper, a model is developed to synchronize a real system (A discrete event simulation model) with a theoretical model (An optimization model). This synchronization will enable the realistic optimization of systems. A job assignment model of the assembly line is formulated for the evaluation of proposed realistic optimization to achieve multiple conflicting objectives. The objectives, fluctuation in cycle time, throughput, labor cost, energy cost, teamwork and deviation in the skill level of operators have been modeled mathematically. To solve the formulated mathematical model, a multi-objective simulation integrated hybrid genetic algorithm (MO-SHGA) is proposed. In MO-SHGA each individual in each population acts as an input scenario of simulation. Also, it is very difficult to assign weights to the objective function in the traditional multi-objective GA because of pareto fronts. Therefore, we have proposed a probabilistic based linearization and multi-objective to single objective conversion method at population evolution phase. The performance of MO-SHGA is evaluated with the standard multi-objective genetic algorithm (MO-GA) with both deterministic and stochastic data settings. A case study of the goalkeeping gloves assembly line is also presented as a numerical example which is solved using MO-SHGA and MO-GA. The proposed research is useful for the development of synchronized human based assembly lines for real time monitoring, optimization, and control.

  • Objective: This study was to develop and verify the effects of the exercise-cognitive combined dual-task training program on cognitive function and depression of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment(MCI). Methods: The subjects were randomly assigned to the exercise-cognitive combined dual-task training group(n=32) or single-task training group(n=31). To identify the effects on cognitive function, general cognitive function, frontal lobe function, and attention/working memory were measured. Depression was evaluated using Korean version of Geriatric Depression Scale. The outcome measurements were performed before and after the 8 weeks of intervention(2 days per week). Results: After 8 weeks, general cognitive function, frontal cognitive function, attention/working memory function, depression of the dual-task training group were significantly increased than those of the single-task training group(p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that an exercise-cognitive combined dual-task training for MCI was effective in improving general cognitive function, frontal /executive function, attention/working memory function and reducing depression.

  • The problem of scheduling n jobs on a single machine is considered when the machine is subject to stochastic breakdowns. The objective is to minimize the weighted squared deviation of job completion times from a common due date. Two versions of the problem are addressed. In the first one the common due date is a given constant, whereas in the second one the common due date is a decision variable. In each case, a general form of deterministic equivalent of the stochastic scheduling problem is obtained when the counting process N(t) related to the machine uptimes is a Poisson process. It is proved that an optimal schedule must be V-shaped in terms of weighted processing time when the agreeable weight condition is satisfied. Based on the V-shape property, two dynamic programming algorithms are proposed to solve both versions of the problem.

  • Among different linear motors, single-sided linear induction motors have been widely used in industry due to their simplicity and low construction cost. However, these types of motors suffer from low efficiency and power factor. In this paper, an effective procedure is proposed to design single-sided linear induction motors. The designed motor is simulated in MATLAB software in order to investigate the effect of design parameters on the performance of the machine. Regarding the obtained results, the Genetic Algorithm is employed to optimize the design considering product of efficiency and power factor as objective function. The results show significant improvement of the performance. Finally, experimental results and 2D finite element method is used to validate the model parameters and the optimization results.

  • This paper considers a single-machine scheduling problem with availability constraints. In many realistic situations, machines may not be always available due to various reasons such as maintenance, breakdown and repair. However, most literature on scheduling assume that the machines are available at all times. This paper deals with a single-machine scheduling problem with periodic maintenance. If the maintenance decision is made jointly with the job scheduling, the system will be more effective. The objective is to minimize the total completion time of jobs. This problem is proved to be NP-hard in the strong sense. The proposed breaking heuristic(BH) algorithm rule is established by some theorems and conditions. Our computational results show that the BH algorithm is much more efficient than existing heuristic.

  • The objective of this investigation was to obtain an excellent spray at the low injection pressure. When cavitation occurred in the nozzle hole the atomization of the liquid jet enhanced considerably. In this experiments, a acrylic nozzle which was installed the gap and installed the bypass in the nozzle hole was used to enhance the atomization of the liquid jet at the few injection pressure. The liquid flow in the nozzle hole was photographed by a transmitted light using a micro flash. The spray angle was measured by macroscope images of PMAS and the Sauter mean diameter was measured by PDA system. The pressure of the notate hole was measured by pressure transducer. It was found that enhanced atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure was obtained by installing the gap and the bypass at the single hole nozzle.
