Static tensile tests using adhesive-bonded single-lap joints of aluminum alloy were conducted to investigate the effect of geometric factor, overlap length, adherend thickness, adhesive thickness and material composition of adherend/adhesive on the strength of adhesive joint. The average applied shear stress at joint fracture decreased with increasing lap length. However increasing the adherend thickness resulted in a higher joint strength. Higher yield strength of adherend and lower elastic modulus of adhesive is advantageous to the adhesive joint. Newly proposed modified joint factor could be well evaluated the influence of lap length, adherend thickness and adhesive thickness on the bond strength for adhesive joints.

The objective of this work is to develop a criterion for predicting the failure strength of the joints bonded by ductile adhesives. To obtain a criterion, first, fracture tests were carried out for T-peel joint and Single-lap joint with widely differing joints geometries. Then using the fracture loads obtained at tests, the finite element analysis were performed, in which the stresses in the adhesive bonds were calculated in great detail. After examining four epoxy adhesives, it is concluded that the fracture of adhesively bonded joint occurs when the maximum of the ratio of the mean to effective stresses exceeds a constant value which can be determined from analysis and test for each adhesive.
The effect of moisture contents by salt water on the strength of composite single-lap bonded joints is investigated. The specimens were manufactured in an autoclave by secondary bonding and immersed in the 3.5% salt water of $71^{\circ}C$ for different durations to get various moisture contents; 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0%(saturation). A total of 80 joint specimens were tested for 5 different moisture contents and 2 temperature environments. Test results show that while the joint strengths after the saturation of moisture decrease compared to those of dry ones, the strengths of the pre-saturated joint up to 1.0% of moisture content increase in both room and elevated temperature conditions. It is also shown that the strengths of joints tested in elevated temperature are slightly higher than the strength in room temperature by 2-5% until the moisture content reaches 1 %. In contrast, the high temperature strength of the saturated joint is about 5% lower than the room temperature strength.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of metal z-pinning on the failure behavior of cocured composite single-lap joints. Three different pin diameters (0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm) and three pin areal densities (0.5, 2.0, and 4.0%) were examined. The specimens were fabricated by T700-12K-31E#2510 unidirectional prepreg from Toray. Stainless steel pins were used for z-pinning. Test results showed that except one case with extremely low pin density of 0.5%, all other z-pinned joints exhibited lower initial crack stresses than those of the unpinned joint. However the ultimate strength of the z-pinned joint increased up to 45% at most. Furthermore, even after the complete failure of the joint, the z-pins sustained the carried load to a certain degree experiencing large deformation and provided the stable fracture behavior for the composite joint.
The adhesively-bonded joints considered in this investigation include single-lap joint and double-lap joint. For an adhesively bonded double-lap joint, end mismatch between the two cuter adherends(upper, lower) can not removed completely although it can be controlled within a manufacturing tolerance. This paper shows that the end mismatch introduces local bending and end mismatch affects the shear and peel stresses in the adhesive. The double-lap joint with an end mismatch is affected of adhesive thickness, material properties of adhesive and adherend etc. Also, we concluded that there are critical value of an end mismatch to provoke the interface fracture.

In this study the three-dimensional nonlinear finite element method was used to analyze the stresses distribution in the adhesive layer used to joint two Aluminum 2024-T3 adherends. We consider in this study the effect of different parameters witch directly affect the values of different stresses. The experimental design method is used to investigate the effects of geometrical parameters of the single lap joint in order to achieve an optimization of the assembly with simple lap joint. As a result, it can be said that both the geometrical modifications of the adhesive and adherends edge have presented a significant effect at the overlap edge thereby causing a decrease in peel and shear stresses. In addition, an analytical model is also given to predict in a simple but effective way the joint strength and its dependence on the geometrical parameters. This approach can help the designers to improve the quality and the durability of the structural adhesive joints.

Disbond size of adhesively bonded single lap and double lap joints CFRP composite specimens has been evaluated using acousto-ultrasonic(AU) technique. Frequency spectra for all specimens were obtained by measuring peak amplitude of the stress wave propagated through the bond-lines. By analyzing these frequency spectra, peak amplitude was found to be proportional to fractional bonding area and to be maxima at the fundamental and the third order higher harmonic frequencies of specimen thickness mode. The disbond size can be evaluated quantitatively and this technique can be applied to real structures if the reference specimens are prepared in advancve.
The experimental and numerical investigations on the failure characteristics of the secondary bonded composite single-lap joints were performed. The initiations and growths of cracks were observed using CCD camera and acoustic emission sensor during the tension tests of the joint specimens. The structural behaviors of the specimens were predicted by the geometric nonlinear two-dimensional finite element analysis. The three types of observed initial cracks were included in each finite element models and the strain energy release rates of each specimen models were calculated by VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique) technique. The tension tests showed that the initial cracks occurred in the 60∼90% of final failure loads and the major failure modes of the specimens were adhesive failure and the delamination between the 1st and 2nd ply of laminate. The specimens with the thicker bondline had earlier crack initiation loads but higher crack propagation resistance and eventually better loading capability. The delaminations were mostly observed in the thicker bondline specimens. The mode I values of calculated strain energy release rates were higher than the mode II values in the all specimen models considering the three types of initial cracks. The mode I and total strain energy release rates were calculated as higher values in the order of initial crack in the edge interface, comer interface and delamination between the plies of laminate.
Bonded joints have proven their performance against conventional joining processes such as welding, riveting and bolting. The single-lap joint is the most widely used to characterize adhesive joints in tensile-shear loadings. However, the high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint due to the non-linearity of the applied loads generate a bending moment in the joint, resulting in high stresses at the adhesive edges. Geometric optimization of the bonded joint to reduce this high stress concentration prompted various researchers to perform geometric modifications of the adhesive and adherends at their free edges. Modifying both edges of the adhesive (spew) and the adherends (bevel) has proven to be an effective solution to reduce stresses at both edges and improve stress transfer at the inner part of the adhesive layer. The majority of research aimed at improving the geometry of the plate and adhesive edges has not considered the effect of temperature and water absorption in evaluating the strength of the joint. The objective of this work is to analyze, by the finite element method, the stress distribution in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. The effects of the adhesive fillet and adherend bevel on the bonded joint stresses were taken into account. On the other hand, degradation of the mechanical properties of the adhesive following its exposure to moisture and temperature was found. The results clearly showed that the modification of the edges of the adhesive and of the bonding agent have an important role in the durability of the bond. Although the modification of the adhesive and bonding edges significantly improves the joint strength, the simultaneous exposure of the joint to temperature and moisture generates high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint that, in most cases, can easily reach the failure point of the material even at low applied stresses.
Adhesive joints are widely used for structural joining applications in various fields and environmental conditions. Polyurethane adhesive is using for LNG carrier with cryogenic temperature condition. In industrial application of polyurethane adhesive, void of adhesive layer is often discussed regarding its effects on bonding properties. In present study, artificial void were prepared on Polyurethane adhesive layer with various size and location. The single lap shear test was carried out by using prepared specimens under $-170^{\circ}C$. As a result, it was confirm that the void of adhesive layer didn't affect the adhesion properties independent of their size and location.
