  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is applied for the effective analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing single isotropic inclusion of two different shapes considering composite fiber volume fraction. Single cylindrical inclusion and single square cylindrical inclusion are considered in the composites with six different fiber volume fractions (0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50). Using the rule of mixtures, the effective material properties are calculated according to the corresponding composite fiber volume fraction. The analysis of plane elastostatic problems in the unbounded effective material containing single fiber that covers an area corresponding to the composite fiber volume fraction in the bounded matrix material are carried out. Thus, single fiber, matrix material with a finite region, and the unbounded effective material are used in the VIEM models for the plane elastostatic analysis. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the inclusion is carried out for single cylindrical or square cylindrical inclusion. Next, the stress field is compared to that at the interface between the matrix and the single inclusion in unbounded isotropic matrix with single isotropic cylindrical or square cylindrical inclusion. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of inclusions. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing inclusions considering composite fiber volume fraction.

  • Interfacial adhesion and nondestructive behavior of electrodeposited (ED) carbon fiber rein-forced composites were evaluated using electro-micromechanical techniques and acoustic emission (AE). The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the ED carbon fiber/epoxy composites was higher than that of the untreated fiber. This might be expected because of the possibility of chemical or hydrogen bonding in an electrically adsorbed polymeric interlayer. The logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to infinity when fiber fracture occurred, whereas that of the ED composite increased relatively gradually to infinity. This behavior may arise from the retarded fracture time due to enhanced IFSS. In single- and ten-carbon fiber composites, the number of AE signals coming from interlayer failure of the ED carbon fiber composite was much larger than that of the untreated composite. As the number of the each first fiber fractures increased in the ten-carbon fiber composite, the electrical resistivity increased stepwise, and the slope of the logarithmic electrical resistance increased.

  • Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated or thin diameter carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to the infinity when the fiber fracture occurred by tensile electro-micromechanical test, whereas that of the ED or thick fiber composite increased relatively broadly up to the infinity. Electrical resistance of single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly due to electrical disconnection by the fiber fracture in tensile electro-micromechanical test, whereas that of SFC increased stepwise due to the occurrence of the partial electrical contact with increasing the buckling or overlapping in compressive test. Electrical resistivity measurement can be very useful technique to evaluate interfacial properties and to monitor curing behavior of single-carbon fiber/epoxy composite under tensile/compressive loading.

  • Double boss type composite pressure bottles have been developed widely but single boss type had not because there are some difficulty in technical point. In this paper a research was performed to develop composite pressure vessel in conjunction with design, fabrication, and test. Fiber pattern and angles were decided by CADFIL software and they are [liner/$15^{\circ}$/$15^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$/$18^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$/$21^{\circ}$/$21^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$]. Fabrication of bottles was done by AEA's 5-axis filament winding machine. During fabrication fiber optic sensor were embedded to measure were behavior of structure at the applied internal pressure. Even though satisfied test results were not obtained, the experimental set-up of fiber optics showed the possibility for the application of filament wound vessels. However, the conventional strain and fabrication of single boss composite bottles.

  • Aerospace structural applications, along with high performance marine and automotive applications, require high-strength efficiency, which can be achieved using metal matrix composites (MMCs). Rotating components, such as jet-engine blades and gas turbine parts, require materials that maximize strength efficiency and metallurgical stability at elevated temperatures. Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) are well suited in such applications, since they offer an enhanced resistance to temperature effects as well as corrosion resistance, in addition to optimum strength efficiency. The overall behavior of the composite system largly depends on the properties of the interface between fiber and matrix. Characterization of the fiber.matrix interface at operating temperatures is therefore essential for the developemt of these materials. The fiber fragmentation test shows good reproducibility of results in determining interface properties. This paper deals with the evaluation of fiber fragmentation characteristics in TMCs at elevated temperature and the results are compared with tests at ambient temperature. It was observed that tensile testing at $650^{\circ}C$ of single-fiber TMCs led to limited fiber fragmentation behavior. This indicates that the load transfer from the matrix to the fiber occurs due to interfacial friction, arising predominantly from mechanical clamping of the fiber by radial compressive residual and Poisson stresses. The present work also demonstrates that composite processing conditions can significantly affect the nature of the fiber.matrix interface and the resulting fragmentation of the fiber.

  • In this study, the tensile behavior of single and hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite according to strain rate was evaluated. Experimental results, in the strain rate 10-6/s, fiber reinforced cement composite showed improved of tensile strength and decrease of strain at peak stress as SSF volume content increased. In the strain rate 101/s, the single and hybrid reinforced cement composite' s tensile properties are improved, because of the improved bond strength between the fiber and matrix. And hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite showed high energy absorption capacity, because the SSF prevented the cracking and fracture of the surrounding matrix when during the HSF pull-out.

  • This paper presents design optimization of a new Active Twist Rotor (ATR) blade and conducts its aeroelastic analysis in forward flight condition. In order to improve a twist actuation performance, the present ATR blade utilizes a single crystal piezoelectric fiber composite actuator and the blade cross-sectional layout is designed through an optimization procedure. The single crystal piezoelectric fiber composite actuator has excellent piezoelectric strain performance when compared with the previous piezoelectric fiber composites such as Active Fiber Composites (AFC) and Macro Fiber Composites (MFC). Further design optimization gives a cross-sectional layout that maximizes the static twist actuation while satisfying various blade design requirements. After the design optimization is completed successfully, an aeroelastic analysis of the present ATR blade in forward flight is conducted to confirm the efficiency in reducing the vibratory loads at both fixed- and rotating-systems. Numerical simulation shows that the present ATR blade utilizing single crystal piezoelectric fiber composites may reduce the vibratory loads significantly even with much lower input-voltage when compared with that used in the previous ATR blade. However, for an application of the present single crystal piezoelectric actuator to a full scaled rotor blade, several issues exist. Difficulty of manufacturing in a large size and severe brittleness in its material characteristics will need to be examined.

  • The single fiber pull-out technique has been commonly used to characterize the mechanical behavior of fiber/matrix interface in fiber reinforced composite materials. In this study, an improved analysis considering the effect of thermal residual stresses in both radial and axial directions is developed for the single fiber pull-out test. It is found to have the pronounced effects on the stress transfer properties across the interface and the interfacial debonding behavior.
