The coercivity of near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles prepared by ball milling of HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy was investigated. The feasibility of a surface nitrogenation for improving the coercivity stability of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles was also studied. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles had a high coercivity of over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity radically deteriorated as the temperature increased in air (< 2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which formed on the surface of the fine particle due to oxidation. Surface nitrogenation of the fine particles significantly improved the stability of their coercivity. The improvement in coercivity stability was attributed to the formation of a thin nitrogenated layer on the surface of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles, which enhanced the anisotropy field and gave improved resistance to oxidation (dissociation).
This study examined the feasibility of the combining HDDR-process (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption and recombination) with mechanical milling to prepare single domain $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ particles from a Nd-Fe-B alloy ingot. The $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy was HDDR-treated and then subjected to a roller-milling. In the HDDR-treated $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy, very small $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains comparable to their critical single domain size(0.3 ${\mu}m$) were observed. These fine individual grains were separated successfully along the grain boundaries by a roller-milling. The separated $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains were found to be single domain particles. These results suggest that single domain particles of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase can be prepared from a Nd-Fe-B ingot alloy by combining a HDDR-process with mechanical milling.
The microwave absorbing characteristics and complex permeability of $Ni_{2-x}Zn_{x}Y$ - rubber composites with variation of composition and particle size were investigated. With a ferrite particle with a diameter of about $1\mu\textrm{m}$, only spin rotational resonance was observed. This behavior probably due to the particle being sufficiently small to approach single domain characteristics so that only spin rotations can occur. The first matching frequency, found in $Ni_{2-x}Zn_{x}Y$ - rubber composites, which was higher than that of spin rotational resonance, increased with spin rotational resonance frequency. It is also found that the second matching frequency is independent of spin rotational resonance frequency. Based on these findings, it could be concluded that the microwave absorbing characteristics were caused by only one type of resonance, the spin rotational resonance.
In this report, we present the results of a study on the effects of the particle size on the properties of the Prussian blue (PB) analog $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$. A novel synthesis method of the $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$ nano-particles using an organic solvent, formamide, is employed. The size of the PB particles is found to be 100-150 nm for the samples prepared in the formamide solvent, which is much smaller than that of the samples prepared using water only. The broadening of the X-ray diffraction peaks of the nano-sized PB samples is attributed to the lattice disorder and a dramatic reduction in the particle size. The compositions of the samples are confirmed by an energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and the result proves that the samples are actually $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$ Prussian blue. The UV-vis spectra show a broad intervalence charge-transfer (CT) band in the visible region between 400 and 700 nm, and the absorption decreases abruptly in the green region for the nano-sized PB sample. A divergence between the field cooled (FC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curves is observed for the nano-sized PB sample at 11 K, indicating that nanoparticles in the sample are single domain superparamagnets with a blocking temperature of 11 K. Our results reveal that the nano-sized PB samples show significantly different optical and magnetic properties than those of the bulk PB samples.
The $ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x $materials were prepared by the combination consisting of the HDDR (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption, and recombination) process and nitrogenation or by the conventional way consisting of nitrogenation only, and the magnetic and thermomagnetic properties of the materials were investigated. The magnetic characterisation of the prepared $ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x $ materials was performed using a VSM. Thermal stability of the materials was evaluated using a DTA under Ar gas atmosphere. The thermomagnetic characteristics of the materials were examined using a Sucksmith-type balance. The previously HDDR-treated Sm2Fe17parent alloy was found to be nitrogenated more easily compared to the ordinary $ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x $alloy. The $ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x $ material produced by the combination method showed a high coercivity (12.9 kOe) even in the state of coarse particle size (around 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). It was also revealed that the $ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_x $ material produced by the material produced by the combination showed an unusual TMA tracing featured with a low and constant magnetisation at lower temperature range and a peak just before the Curie temperature. This thermomagnetic characteristic was interpreted in terms of the competition between two counteracting effects; the decrease in magnetisation due to the thermal agitation at an elevated temperature and the increase in magnetisation resulting from the rotation of magnetisation of the fine grains comparable to a critical single domain size due to the decreased magnetocrystalline anisotropy at an elevated temperature.
Cohesie sediment movement in estuarine systems is strongly affected by the phenomena of aggregation and flocculation. Aggregation is the process where primary particles are clustered together in tightly-packed formations; flocculation is the process where aggregates and single particles are bonded together to form large particle groups of very low specific density. The size, shape and strength of the flocculants control the rate of deposition and the processes of pollutant exchange between suspended sediments and ambient water. In estuarine waters, suspended sediments above the lutocline form the mobile suspension zone while below the lutocline they form the stationary suspension zone. Suspended particles in the mobile zone are generally in a dispersed state and the controlling forces are the Brownian motion and the turbulent flow fluctuations. In the stationary suspension zone, the driving force is the gravity. This paper discusses the settling and particle flocculation characteristics under quiescient flow conditions. Particles are entering the study domain randomly. Particles in the mobile suspension zone are simulated by using the Smoluchowski's model. Flocs created in the mobil suspension zone are moving into the stationary suspension zone where viscosity and drag effects are important. Utilizing the concepts of the maximum Feret's diameter and the Minkowski's sausage logic, the fractal dimension of the flocs within the stationary suspension is estimated and then compared with results obtained by other studies.
This research has been performed for the fabrication of high quality ferrite plastic magnet. The magnetic properties of S $r_{5.9}$F $e_2$$O_3$ ferrite bonded magnets by injection moulding with a variety of applied magnetic field were investigated. 0.3wt% CaCO3, 0.2wt% $SiO_2$, 0.5wt% $Al_2$$O_3$and 0.5wt% N $a_2$$SiO_3$are added in order to improve the magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite plastic magnets during the powder fabrication. For carbon coating on chemical compound specimen, 5wt% polyvinyl alcohol is added, and then calcinated under $N_2$ environment of 12$25^{\circ}C$. The particle size is distributed from 0.9~1.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ which approximates to the single domain. The obtained Sr ferrite powder is well mixed with silane coupling and calcium stearate of 1wt%. Nest, the specimen is pelleted after kneading each of them with polyamidel2 as a binder. When the temperature of injection and mould were 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ respectively at injection pressure of 200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the degree of orientation was 85.3% under the applied magnetic field of 12kOe. As the results, when the packing density of Sr ferrite powder was 90wt%, the magnetic properties of Sr ferrite bonded magnet were follows : $_{B}$$H_{c}$=2.41kOe, Br=3.1kG, (BH)$_{max}$=2.21MgOe. Especially, the Sr-ferrite bonded magnet with 10wt% N $d_2$F $e_{14}$B additive were as follows : $_{B}$$H_{c}$=2.57kOe, Br=3.14kG and (BH)$_{max}$=2.39MGOe.GOe.GOe.GOe.e.
