Coercivity of Near Single Domain Size Nd2Fe14B-type Particles

  • The coercivity of near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles prepared by ball milling of HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy was investigated. The feasibility of a surface nitrogenation for improving the coercivity stability of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles was also studied. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles had a high coercivity of over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity radically deteriorated as the temperature increased in air (< 2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which formed on the surface of the fine particle due to oxidation. Surface nitrogenation of the fine particles significantly improved the stability of their coercivity. The improvement in coercivity stability was attributed to the formation of a thin nitrogenated layer on the surface of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles, which enhanced the anisotropy field and gave improved resistance to oxidation (dissociation).

Preparation of Nd2Fe14B Single Domain Particles from Nd-Fe-B Alloy Ingot Using a Combination of HDDR and Mechanical Milling

  • This study examined the feasibility of the combining HDDR-process (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption and recombination) with mechanical milling to prepare single domain $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ particles from a Nd-Fe-B alloy ingot. The $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy was HDDR-treated and then subjected to a roller-milling. In the HDDR-treated $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$ alloy, very small $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains comparable to their critical single domain size(0.3 ${\mu}m$) were observed. These fine individual grains were separated successfully along the grain boundaries by a roller-milling. The separated $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains were found to be single domain particles. These results suggest that single domain particles of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase can be prepared from a Nd-Fe-B ingot alloy by combining a HDDR-process with mechanical milling.

Toward the computational rheometry of filled polymeric fluids

  • We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

  • In this study, we propose a new fast algorithm for calculating short range forces in molecular dynamics, This algorithm uses a new hierarchical tree data structure which has a high adaptiveness to the particle distribution. It can divide a parent cell into k daughter cells and the tree structure is independent of the coordinate system and particle distribution. We investigated the characteristics and the performance of the tree structure according to k. For parallel computation, we used orthogonal recursive bisection method for domain decomposition to distribute particles to each processor, and the numerical experiments were performed on a 32-node Linux cluster. We compared the performance of the oct-tree and developed new algorithm according to the particle distributions, problem sizes and the number of processors. The comparison was performed sing tree-independent method and the results are independent of computing platform, parallelization, or programming language. It was found that the new algorithm can reduce computing cost for a large problem which has a short search range compared to the computational domain. But there are only small differences in wall-clock time because the proposed algorithm requires much time to construct tree structure than the oct-tree and he performance gain is small compared to the time for single time step calculation.

Chemical Transformation of Individual Asian Dust Particles Estimated by the Novel Double Detector System of Micro-PIXE

  • By the application of novel double detector system of micro-PIXE that can detect light elements (Z<14), we made an attempt to provide a thorough discussion on the aging processes of Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particle by reaction with sea-slat. The elemental spectra and maps obtained from the microbeam radiation of micro-PIXE to individual AD particles were useful for fractionating AD particles into both internally and externally mixed particles. A spatial distribution of elements in a minute domain of single particle obtained by scanning the microbeam irradiation enabled us not only to estimate the chemical mixing state of individual AD particles but also to presume their aging processes in both ambient air and cloud. By calculating the normalized micro-PIXE net count of elements, it was possible to classify individual AD particles into three distinct groups (i.e., (1) Aging type 1: AD particle coated by the gaseous Cl evaporated by the reaction between artificial acids and sea salt; (2) Aging type 2: AD particle mixed with sea salt but no additional reaction with artificial acids; and (3) Non-aged type) A relatively high transformation rate (63.3-75.9%) was shown in large particles (greater than $5.1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter).

  • We present a new finite-element scheme for direct numerical simulation of particle suspensions in simple shear flow of a viscoelastic fluid in 3D. The sliding tri-periodic representative cell concept has been combined with DEVSS/DG finite element scheme by introducing constraint equations along the domain boundary. Rigid body motion of the freely suspended particle is described by the rigid-shell description and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers on particle boundaries. We present the bulk rheology of suspensions through the numerical examples of single-, two- and many-particle problems, which represent a large number of such systems in simple shear flow. We report the steady bulk viscosity and the first normal stress coefficient, which show shear-thickening behavior for both properties.

Optimization Analysis of the Shape and Position of a Submerged Breakwater for Improving Floating Body Stability

  • Submerged breakwaters can be installed underneath floating structures to reduce the external wave loads acting on the structure. The objective of this study was to establish an optimization analysis framework to determine the corresponding shape and position of the submerged breakwater that can minimize or maximize the external forces acting on the floating structure. A two-dimensional frequency-domain boundary element method (FD-BEM) based on the linear potential theory was developed to perform the hydrodynamic analysis. A metaheuristic algorithm, the advanced particle swarm optimization, was newly coupled to the FD-BEM to perform the optimization analysis. The optimization analysis process was performed by calling FD-BEM for each generation, performing a numerical analysis of the design variables of each particle, and updating the design variables using the collected results. The results of the optimization analysis showed that the height of the submerged breakwater has a significant effect on the surface piercing body and that there is a specific area and position with an optimal value. In this study, the optimal values of the shape and position of a single submerged breakwater were determined and analyzed so that the external force acting on a surface piercing body was minimum or maximum.

점성유체에 분산된 타원형 야누스 입자의 자성 상호작용에 관한 직접수치해석 (Direct Simulation of the Magnetic Interaction of Elliptic Janus Particles Suspended in a Viscous Fluid)

  • 외부자기장에 의한 타원형 야누스 자성입자 사이의 자성 상호작용을 직접수치해석을 사용하여 분석하였다. 유한요소법에 기초한 가상영역법을 사용하여 입자계 유동해석을 수행하였고, 자기장 문제에서는 자성 포텐셜에 대한 지배방정식을 입자와 유체를 포함하는 전체영역에 대하여 풀어 자기장을 구하였다. 이 때 구해진 자기장으로부터 구한 맥스웰 응력을 사용하여 개별 입자에 작용하는 자기력이 계산된다. 입자의 운동과 최종적인 조립구조는 입자의 형상비, 개별 입자의 배향, 입자의 초기 분포에 크게 영향을 받는 것이 확인되었다. 또한 입자의 배향은 입자 주위의 유체 유동에도 영향을 주었다. 외부자기장에 의한 타원형 야누스 입자의 최종 조립구조는 앞서 언급한 인자들에 의해서 영향을 받은 것을 수치해석을 통해 확인할 수 있었다.
