  • Simultaneous determination of three methoxyflavones, namely, cirsimarin (1), hispidulin (2), and cirsimaritin (3) in selected Korean thistles was performed via reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography system. Compound 1 was present in all the thistle species examined, whereas 2 and 3 were only detected in Cirsium japonicum and C. japonicum var. maackii (CJM). The concentration of compounds 1-3 in CJM varied according to the time of harvest. Plants collected in the spring (CJMS) and fall (CJMF) had the highest contents of 3 and 1, respectively. A lower content of 2 was observed in CJMF than in CJMS. This indicates that seasonal variation affects the flavonoid content of CJM. The results of this study show that CJM is an excellent source of compounds 1-3 and it can potentially be cultivated for industrial and pharmaceutical applications involving these compounds.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the groundwater pumping capadty at a catchment area containing interrelated wells without considering their qualities by using numerical simulation in Miyake Island, young volcanic island with very complicated hydro-geological formations. The groundwater pumping capadties of each well and over entire study area were estimated as the IMY(i,t) by individual withdrawals and the SSMY(t) by simultaneous withdrawals. These results can be used to secure a sure source for taking a plan for supplying water use in young volcanic island as Miyake Island. In simultaneous withdrawals, the withdrawals from well no. 5 and 6 should have the roles as the barrier wells against the intrusion of the groundwater of the part adjacent to Tairo Pond into the inner part of study area. Therefore, it can be suggested to adopt the simultaneous withdrawals as the optimal approach of groundwater management for supplying water use with respect to quantity and quality.

  • In this study, effective simultaneous nitrification and denitrification reaction was accomplished in a completely mixed single bioreactor. As the important factors on the reaction, optimal DO concentration and effective range of influent C/N ratio was investigated with the synthetic wastewater. Experimental results show that stable nitrogen removals were accomplished with 0.5 mg/L DO concentration and over 7 C/N ratio. Nitrogen removal efficiency of the real municipal wastewater was low with 0.5 mg/L DO concentration because of its low C/N ratio. The increment of the C/N ratio at the inflow of the municipal wastewater with addition of external carbon source (glucose) over 7(up to 14) shows over 70% nitrogen removal in the single bioreactor.

  • In this study, we determined optimal conditions for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) using corncob biomass pretreated with oxalic acid. The effect of SSF temperature ($25.8{\sim}34.2^{\circ}C$) and agitation speed (80~220 rpm) were significant at a 99% confidence level in its effect on ethanol production. The highest ethanol production was expected when SSF was performed at $30^{\circ}C$, 170 rpm (22.5 g/L). The ethanol production was improved by mixture of yeast extract (1.25 g/L) and urea (1.25 g/L) as nitrogen source. However, addition of trace metal components and vitamin for SSF was not affected in the ethanol production. Optimal concentration of $KH_2PO_4$, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ for SSF was 1 g/L, 0.25 g/L respectively.

  • Citrus junos seeds (CS) have been traditionally used for the treatment of cancer and neuralgia. They are also used to manufacture edible oil and cosmetic perfume. A large amount of CS shells without oil (CSS) are discarded after the oil in CS is used as foods or herbal remedy. To efficiently utilize CSS as a by-products, it needs to be studied through chemical analysis. Therefore, we developed an ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)-diode array detection (DAD) method for simultaneous determination and quantitative analysis of five components (two flavonoids and threes limonoids) in CSS. A Waters Acquity UPLC HSS T3 column C18 (2.1 × 100 mm, 1.8 ㎛) was used for this separation. It was maintained at 40 ℃. The mobile phase used for the analysis was distilled water and acetonitrile with gradient elution. To identify the quantity of the five components, a mass spectrometer (MS) with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source was used. The regression equation showed great linearity, with correlation coefficient ≥ 0.9912. Limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) of the five compounds were 0.09 - 0.13 and 0.26 - 0.38 ㎍/mL, respectively. Recoveries of extraction ranged from 97.45% to 101.91%. Relative standard deviation (RSD) values of intra- and inter-day precision were 0.06 - 1.15% and 0.19 - 0.25%, respectively. This UPLC-DAD method can be validated to simultaneously analyze quantities of marker flavonoids and limonoids in CSS.

  • For developing a new embedded system, an application program/an emulator and a compiler are developed simultaneously. In order to provide the optimal performance of all system components, local optimization should be carried out for the developing process. For this purpose, if a source-level performance analyzer is developed, it is possible to optimize the application program's source code by the performance evaluation. In general, the performance of an application program is determined in the loop iterations. The Intermediate Representation (IR) code generator generates IR code from the source code, and evaluates the execution time with the instructions in the intermediate representation code. If the source code is improved based on the evaluated result, better results can be obtained in the final application code. This study describes the source-level performance analyzer that can be used during the simultaneous development of the new embedded system and its application programs. The performance analyzer makes it possible to more quickly optimize the performance of the new embedded system.

  • In general, Independent component analysis (ICA) is a statistical blind source separation technique, used either in spatial or temporal domain. The spatial or temporal ICAs are designed to extract maximally independent sources in respective domains. The underlying sources for spatiotemporal data (sequence of images) can not always be guaranteed to be independent, therefore spatial ICA extracts the maximally independent spatial sources, deteriorating the temporal sources and vice versa. For such data types, spatiotemporal ICA tries to create a balance by simultaneous optimization in both the domains. However, the spatiotemporal ICA suffers the problem of source ambiguity. Recently, constrained ICA (c-ICA) has been proposed which incorporates a priori information to extract the desired source. In this study, we have extended the c-ICA for better analysis of spatiotemporal data. The proposed algorithm, i.e., constrained spatiotemporal ICA (constrained st-ICA), tries to find the desired independent sources in spatial and temporal domains with no source ambiguity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested against the conventional spatial and temporal ICAs using simulated data. Furthermore, its performance for the real spatiotemporal data, functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI), is compared with the SPM (conventional fMRI data analysis tool). The functional maps obtained with the proposed algorithm reveal more activity as compared to SPM.

  • We present the results of multi-epoch, multi-frequency monitoring of a blazar 4C +29.45, which was regularly monitored as part of the Interferometric Monitoring of GAmma-ray Bright AGNs program - a key science program of the Korean Very long baseline interferometry Network (KVN). Observations were conducted simultaneously at 22, 43, 86 and 129 GHz during the 4 years from December 2012 to December 2016. We also used additional data from the 15 GHz Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) monitoring program. From the 15 GHz light curve, we estimated the variability time scales of the source during several radio flux enhancements. We found that the source experiencesd 6 radio flux enhancements with variability time scales of 9-187 days during the observing period, yielding corresponding variability Doppler factors of 9-27. From the multi-frequency simultaneous KVN observations, we were able to obtain accurate radio spectra of the source and hence to more precisely measure the turnover frequencies 𝜈r of synchrotron self-absorbed (SSA) emission with a mean value of ${\bar{\nu}_r}=28.9GHz$. Using jet geometry assumptions, we estimated the size of the emitting region at the turnover frequency. Taking into account these results, we found that the equipartition magnetic field strength is up to two orders of magnitudes higher than the SSA magnetic field strength (0.6-99 mG). This is consistent with the source being particle dominated.

  • In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward (AF) full-duplex relay network (FDRN) using simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a battery-free relay node harvests energy from the received radio frequency (RF) signals from a source node and uses the harvested energy to forward the source information to destination node. The time-switching relaying (TSR) protocol is studied, with the assumption that the channel state information (CSI) at the relay node is imperfect. We deliver a rigorous analysis of the outage probability of the proposed system. Based on the outage probability expressions, the optimal time switching factor are obtained via the numerical search method. The simulation and numerical results provide practical insights into the effect of various system parameters, such as the time switching factor, the noise power, the energy harvesting efficiency, and the channel estimation error on the performance of this network. It is also observed that for the imperfect CSI case, the proposed scheme still can provide acceptable outage performance given that the channel estimation error is bounded in a permissible interval.

  • The Galactic center, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), is the closest supermassive black hole and emits synchrotron radiation. It provides great opportunity to study the origin of mm/sub-mm emission. Currently, two competing models have been suggested as a jet base and a radiatively inecient accretion flow (RIAF). To unveil the properties, the extremely high resolution(${\sim}10{\mu}as$) corresponding to the projected Schwarzschild radius of ~0.1AU is necessary. With KVN, a jet model can be tested by multi- frequency simultaneous observations because the optically thick surface in a jet (i.e. radio core) moves toward the center at a higher frequency. We conducted 8 observations with KVN at 43/86GHz in 2015, and found that the measured positional shift to the reference calibrator, J1744-3116, was ~0.3 mas to the south of Sgr A* using the source frequency phase referencing (SFPR) at Q/W bands for the first time. With the result, in the future, we will attempt to measure the variation of source position shifts that can constrain the direction of approaching jets and the variability of black hole activity of Sgr A*.
