This paper discusses a new formulation for the failure strain in the average stress triaxiaility domain for a low-temperature high-strength steel (EH36). The new formula available at a low average stress triaxiality zone is proposed based on the comparison of two results from tensile tests of flat type specimens and their numerical simulations. In order to confirm the validity of the failure strain formulation, a user-subroutine was developed using Abaqus/Explicit, which is known to be one of the most popular commercial finite element analysis codes. Numerical fracture simulations with the user-subroutine were conducted for all the tensile tests. A comparison of the engineering stress-strain curves and engineering failure strain obtained from the numerical simulation with the user-subroutine for the tensile tests revealed that the newly developed user-subroutine effectively predicts the initiation of failure.
Recently the renewable energy has been used widely and the importance of renewable sources is bigger than before. And the government enforced a law to the public buildings to install the renewable energy facilities. The capacity of facilities was 5% of total construction cost until April 13, 2011. Since then, the government changed the law from 5% of total construction cost to 10% of predicted energy usage for the resonable use of the renewable energy facilities. In this study, the comparative analysis is conducted according to the law to the building installed PV system through the Energy Plus simulation. And the method for improving renewable energy supply ratio was analyzed using existing PV array. Adjusting the PV array angle is the best way to generate more electric power without additional fee. When applying the month optimum angle, 3,600kWh of electric power are more generated compared to the existing angle.
The purpose of this study is to present an alternative plan in order to reduce the required time to flee from the inside of the gosiwon in danger. The data were derived from changing the width of corridors and emergency exits and the number of stairs in the building EXODUS, which is computer simulation program, The analyzed conclusions from the data are following as below (1) Increasing the exits and the number of stairs are efficient to reduce the accumulated time for standing by. (2) Increasing the number of stairs is efficient to decrease the distance to get out of the building to exit. (3) Increasing the number of stairs is efficient to reduce the time to get out of the building to exit.
Recently, in accordance with the buildings are becoming to large-sizes, high-stories, the large scaled facilities and equipments in machine room are quite demanding, and the generated noise volume according to this situation is on increasing. Since such noise is becoming to the object of a serious civil appeal, it is the real situation that a reduction countermeasure against the machine room equipment noise is keenly necessitated. On such viewpoint, this study has recorded, measured the noises which were generated from each individual as same as the whole equipped machines and tools, on the object of the dormitory machine rooms of the 3 colleges that haying mutually different peculiarities, then after grasp-ing their characters and acoustic powers, this research has verified its prediction possibility and the authenticity by comparison the estimated numerical value with the actually measured numerical value through the acoustic simulation. After grasping the prediction possibility in such way, by utilization of the sound absorption material in the machinery room, from the stage of design, the soundproof measures for the noise reduction at machine room could be regulated effectively, and it is also considered that such data would be utilized as the fundamental material for an establishment of the measure for sound insulation.
This Study, as a Eco-Friendly Design Process of Office for sustainable design, aims to develop a sustainable design process by letting the designers easily approach the concept of Eco-Friendly Design Process and applying this to Eco-Friendly Design Process when the designers perform design. Through a review on simulation, a research was made on the seriousness of environmental problems and control that was caused by design, Environmentally friendly design, sustainability, and sustainable design's background and definition were studied. In order to develop a Eco-Friendly Design Process, an existing review from Building Energy Simulation that proposed about energy environmentally friendly design element and sustainable design element's semantic similarities were restructured as sustainable design element comparative analysis. Restructured sustainable design elements and the relationship between sustainable design elements and the relationship of each product developmental process levels were analyzed. Finally, through clustering, sustainable design guideline were developed. This Eco-Friendly Design Process is expected to be applied to as one of the methods in solving the global environmental issues in design practice.
The erosion of solid particles in a pipe elbow was numerically investigated. A numerical procedure to estimate the sand erosion rate, as well as the particle motion, in the pipe elbow flow was introduced. This procedure was performed based on the combined empirical erosion model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to consider the interaction between the particle motion and the eroded surface. The underlying turbulent flow on an Eulerian frame is described by the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model. The one-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian motion of the air flow and sand particles is employed to simulate the particle trajectories and particle-wall interactions on the pipe surfaces. The predicted CFD erosion magnitudes are compared with experimental data from pipe elbows. The erosion rate results do not reveal a good accordance between the simulation and experimental results. It seems that the CFD shows a slightly over-predicted erosion ratio.
The accelerated development of new materials, technologies and construction processes, in parallel with advances in computational algorithms and ever growing computational power, is leading to more daring and innovative architectural and structural designs. The search for non-regular building shapes and slender structures, as alternative to the traditional architectural forms that have been prevailing in the building sector, poses important engineering challenges in the assessment of the strength and mechanical stability of non-conventional structures and systems, namely against highly variable actions as wind and seismic forces. In case of complex structures, laboratory experiments are a widely used methodology for strength assessment and loading characterization. Nevertheless, powerful numerical tools providing reliable results are also available today and able to compete with the experimental approach. In this paper the wind action on a free-form complex thin shell is investigated through 3D-CFD simulation in terms of the pressure coefficients and global forces generated. All the modelling aspects and calibrating process are described. The results obtained showed that the CFD technique is effective in the study of the wind effects on complex-shaped structures.
The dynamic response of crossing tunnels under heavy-haul train loads is still not fully understood. In this study, based on the case of a high-speed tunnel underneath an existing heavy-haul railway tunnel, a model experiment was performed to research the dynamic response characteristics of crossing tunnels. It is found that the under-crossing changes the dynamic response of the existing tunnel and surrounding rock. The acceleration response of the existing tunnel enhances, and the dynamic stress of rock mass between crossing tunnels decreases after the excavation. Both tunneling and the excitation of heavy-haul train loads stretch the tunnel base, and the maximum tensile strain is 18.35 µε in this model test. Then, the measured results were validated by numerical simulation. Also, a parametric study was performed to discuss the influence of the relative position between crossing tunnels and the advanced support on the dynamic behavior of the existing tunnel, where an amplifying coefficient of tunnel vibration was introduced to describe the change in acceleration due to tunneling. These results reveal the dynamic amplifying phenomenon of the existing tunnel during the new tunnel construction, which can be referred in the dynamic design of crossing tunnels.
Numerical schemes for spacing and time are tested to accurately simulate the wave propagation. The tested numerical schemesinclude 2nd-order central differencing, l-order upwind scheme, 2nd-order Leith scheme, 3rd-order MUSCLE, QUICK and QUICKEST schemes in spacing and the Euler and 4th-order Runge-Kutta(R-K) schemes in time. It is seen that more accurate results are expected when the higher-order schemes, especially the schemes combined with a TVD control limiter, are used for solving the wave equation. The 3rd-order upwind scheme with limiter and the 4th-order R-K scheme in tim£ are finally applied to the wave-making simulation in a digital wave tank.
Recently, some fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems involving the fluid impact loads interacting with structures, such as sloshing, slamming, green-water, etc., have been considered, especially in the ocean engineering field. The governing equations for both an elastic solid model and flow model were originally derived from similar continuum mechanics principles. In this study, an elastic model based on a particle method, the MPS method, was developed for simulating the FSI problems. The developed model was first applied to a simple cantilever deflection problem for verification. Then, the model was coupled with the fluid flow model, the PNU (Pusan National University modified)-MPS method, and applied to the numerical investigation of the coupling effects between a cantilever and a mass of water, which has variable density, free-falling to the end of the cantilever.
