Korean shipbuilding companies have sometimes carried out sea trials to measure a vessel's speed performance around the western channel of the Straits of Korea, where the flow fields are very complicated because of the effect of various flows such as sea, tidal, geostrophic, and wind-driven currents. Because these flows seem to present significant interference to a ship, the numerical reproduction of the flow-fields in the vicinity of the target sites could provide a better understanding of the sea environments while performing sea trials. In this study, we used the MEC ocean model to simulate the tidal currents around Tsushima Island and compared the simulated tidal amplitudes and currents with the measurements of Teague et al. (2001). The tidal amplitudes of the present simulation results agreed well with the observations. Based on the numerical simulation, the optimal direction and proper sites for a speed trial are described.
Purpose: Temperature in urban areas increase much more than suburban areas and it is called urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. There are several solutions to control UHI phenomenon such as green roof system, water space construction, and cool roof system. However, application of green roof system and cool roof system to some of the buildings which compose the city has a critical limit. Therefore, in order to diminish the temperature rising and UHI phenomenon due to climate change of the city, it needs to approach from the viewpoint of site or city, rather than the viewpoint of individual buildings. This study is aims at analyzing UHI phenomenon by characteristics of surface materials and suggesting the solutions to reduce UHI phenomenon by types of complex. Method: Literature reviews were conducted to analyze the cause, mitigating plan, and recent trends of UHI phenomenon. For the simulation analysis, the type of complex was classified 3 representative complex. Based on measured reflectivity, simulation about UHI phenomenon was conducted by setting 4 strategies; albedo of roof, road pavement, green roof system, and vegetating around buildings. Result: As the results of simulating the UHI reduction factor by types of complex, it showed that the effect of temperature reduction on the building roof layer is more effective than adjusting the reflectivity of buildings such as green roof system, planting near the buildings in both the detached house complex, apartment complex, and commercial complex.
Recently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have attracted much attention, according to the enhanced social demand of renewable energy. GSHP systems can achieve higher coefficient of performance than the conventional air-source heat pump systems by utilizing stable underground temperature. However, the initial cost of GSHP system is higher than that of the conventional systems, especially, in the small-size buildings. Therefore, it is necessary to develop small-size ground heat exchanger with low cost and quick installation. In this study, a unit-type ground heat exchanger was developed and heat exchange rate was calculated by the numerical simulation. As a result, 27.45 W/m of heat exchange rate was acquired in the condition of $0.5m{\times}0.2m{\times}2m$ unit.
The purpose of this study is not only to compare between 'Opened Landscape' and 'Filtered Landscape' image and preference but also to suggests a guide line of planting design for progressive realization. For this, the image structures of photo-sketch simulation for parallax landscape have been investigated by Semantic Differential scale(S.D. scale) and the Factor analysis. The results could be summarized as follows. The results of S.D. scale values for landscape through parallax were greater than non-parallax landscape. The scenes through parallax were better preferred to direct view. Thus the results of photo-sketch simulation test support the expected hypothesis that the visual environment of complexity and variety is closely correlated with the parallax effect and monotonous or non-parallax environment, and parallax effect on close view more bigger than the distant view. Factors covering the spatial image of parallax landscape were found to be seven and Total values were 60.35 %. The most important factors determining the parallax effect were Factors I 'depth of space' and VI 'expectation of space and interest'. An outstanding view must be handled properly to be preserved or accentuated. In this sense, the parallax spatial beauty with tree could be improved through the visual aspects of plan arrangements and the progressive realization appeared to be one effective design technique for landscape planning and design.
3D modeling and rendering technologies are getting more attention from landscape planners and architects because the virtual reality based on 3D graphic technology could give more realistic experience to landscape simulation users and boost promotional effects. The 3D landscape simulation, however, not only requires a lot of cost and time in production, but also demands efforts to distribute to consumers due to various computing environment of them. The purpose of this study is to suggest a process for developing an interactive 3D landscape simulator with low-cost, which can support multi-platform functionality in high quality through reviewing related current software and web services. We select GIMP for 2D image texturing, SketchUpfor 3D modeling, Unity for real-time rendering, and Google Earth for terrain modeling considering price and workability and apply the developed process for Windows, Web, and Android versions to test the applicability for Sangji-ri, Gosam-myeon, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.
The increasing interest in the environment and climate change around the globe, while the importance of building energy saving is increasing. The building energy simulation program is used for evaluating of energy performance of buildings. However, an input value of wood thermal conductivity in the programs is different from each other. Therefore, in this study, wood thermal conductivity was measured according to species. Through construction database by species of wood, the error of simulation program are able be decreased. In addition, if used as a structural and interior of buildings, the thermal conductivity and moisture of the wood is difficult to apply to the program because they were changed according to the occupant's lifestyle. In this paper, thermal conductivity and moisture content.of wood confirmed changes in the constant temperature and relative humidity ($25^{\circ}C$, 50% R.H.) condition.
A CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis is presented to predict hydrodynamic characteristics of a marine propeller. A commercial RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation) solver, namely FLUENT, is utilized in conjunction with fully unstructured meshes around rotating propeller. Mesh generation process is greatly accelerated by using fully unstructured meshes composed of both isotropic and anisotropic tetrahedral elements. The anisotropic tetrahedral elements were used in the flow domain near the blade and shaft, where the viscous effect is important, having complex shape yet resolving the thin boundary layers. For other regions, isotropic tetrahedral elements are utilized. Two different approaches simulating rotational effect of the propeller are employed, namely Moving reference frame technique for steady simulation, and Sliding mesh technique for unsteady simulation. Both approaches are applied to the propeller open water (POW) test simulation. The current results, which are thrust and torque coefficients, are compared with available experimental data.
In order to better save energy, many buildings have been constructed with high levels of insulation and airtightness in recent years. Additionally, having high quality indoor air has become more relevant, necessitating a ventilating system. This study is aimed at evaluating the performance of a humidity exchanger through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of elements for the purpose of providing comfortable indoor air and reduced energy consumption. The simulation was conducted with three different shapes (triangle, rectangular, and curve) of heat exchanger elements, in order to find the most effective element. A follow-up simulation then proved the efficiency of the chosen humidity exchanger, which was selected by analyzing the results of the preceding simulation, comparing study data with measurement data from the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL). The resulting analysis revealed that the rectangular element showed the lowest level of efficiency in both heating and cooling, while the curved element showed the highest level of efficiency in both heating and cooling.
To develope a hull form of catamaran type dredging vessel, resistance characteristics is investigated to find the interaction effect of waves between the two hulls. Re fore body shape is simplified as two dimensional wedge shape for the maintenance and disassembly/assembly. Based on MAC method, numerical simulation is performed in staggered variable mesh system. Re conservation form of Euler equations and continuity equation are applied as governing equations. To verify numerical methods, the wive patterns along the hull surface are compared with the results of model tests. This study is performed as varying wedge shape of the bow and the distance between the two hulls. The wave interaction between two hulls are observed to investigate the relation the resistance performance and the flow characteristics. Suitable hull form and distance between two hulls are discussed.
In this paper, a strongly coupled method for investigating the interaction between a cable and tow-fish is presented. The nodal position finite element method was utilized to analyze the nonlinear cable dynamics, and 6DOF equations of motion were employed to describe the 3D rigid body motion of the tow-fish. Combining cable and tow-fish systems into a single formulation allowed the two nonlinear systems to be strongly coupled into a unified nonlinear system. This strongly coupled system was numerically integrated in the time domain using a predictor/multi-corrector Newmark algorithm. To demonstrate the validity, efficacy, and applicability of the current approach, two different scenarios (virtual and sea trial) were simulated, and the simulation results were validated using the physical plausibility and the sea trial test.
