In this contribution, the control of multivariable reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers is presented. First, feed-forward compensators are designed using simplified decoupling method and then the PID controllers are tuned for flux (flow-rate) and conductivity (salinity). The tuning of PID controllers is accomplished by minimization of the integral of squared error (ISE). The ISEs are minimized using a recently proposed algorithm named as teacher-learner-based-optimization (TLBO). TLBO algorithm is used due to being simple and being free from algorithm-specific parameters. A comparative analysis is carried out to prove the supremacy of TLBO algorithm over other state-of-art algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) and differential evolution (DE). The simulation results and comparisons show that the purposed method performs better in terms of performance and can successfully be applied for tuning of PID controllers for RO desalination plants.
This paper proposed a novel double closed control strategy for single-phase voltage source pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier based on active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and dq current decoupling control. First, the mathematical model of the single-phase PWM rectifier in the d-q axis synchronous rotating reference frame is established by constructing a virtual component using a second-order generalized integrator (SOGI). Then, the mathematical model is simplified according to the active power conservation, and the first-order equation of single-phase PWM rectifier voltage outer loop is acquired. A linear auto-disturbance rejection controller is used to design the voltage outer loop according to the first-order equation. Finally, the proposed control strategy and the traditional PI control are compared and verified by simulation and physical experiments. Both simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed control strategy has excellent dynamic performance and strong rejection ability to disturbances.

This work proposes a simple control method of a buck-type active power decoupling circuit that can minimize the ripple values in the dc link voltage. The proposed method utilizes a simplified duty calculation method and an optimal compensation gain tracking algorithm with variable-step approach. Thus, the dc link voltage ripple can be effectively reduced through the proposed method along with rapid response in tracking the optimum compensation gain. Moreover, the proposed method has better dynamic responses in the load fluctuation or abnormal situation. MATLAB/Simulink simulation and hardware-in-the-loop-simulation(HILS)-based experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

This paper propose a PI controller that maximizes the degree of stability using a stability in a simplified motor model the applies decoupling control. The PI controller gains are directly from the motor parameters, thereby reducing the element of trial and error, and, the Kharitonov equation was used to evaluate the robustness of the gains to changes in the motor parameters. In addition, the system poles are located in the same position, the proposed method can provide a fast response. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by simulation results.

In this paper, we attempt to control induction motors with high power efficiency as well as high dynamic performance by utilizing the recently developed theories : singular perturbation technique and noninteracting feedback control. Our controller consists of three subcontrollers` a saturation current controller, a decoupling controller, and a well-known flux simulator. The decoupling controller decouples rotor speed (or motor torque) and rotor flux linearly. Our controller does not need the rotor resistance that varies widely with the machine temperature. To illuminate the practical significance of our results, we present simulation and experimental results as well as mathematical performance analysis.

The conventional adaptive hysteresis band current control technique has disadvantages such that on-line calculation of the hysteresis band is very complex, therefore, the adaptive hysteresis band must be stored in the look-up table. In this paper, a new simplified adaptive hysteresis band current control technique with phase decoupling is presented. The adaptive band is independent of the back EMFs. Using this adaptive band and the phase decoupled current error, the modulation frequency is fixed at nearly constant and the PWM inverter has optimal switching pattern.
In this paper, a new algorithm for active control design of structures is proposed and investigated. The algorithm preserves the decoupling property of the modal vibration equation and eliminates the spillover problem, which is the main shortcoming in the independent modal space control(IMSC) algorithm. With linear quadratic regulator(LQR) control law, the analytical solution of algebraic Riccati equation and the optimal actuator control force are obtained, and the control design procedure is significantly simplified. A numerical example for the control design of a tall building subjected to wind loads demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in reducing the acceleration and displacement responses of tall buildings under wind actions.
In this paper, an analytical formulation is proposed to predict the vertical vibration response due to the pedestrian walking on a footbridge considering the human-structure interaction, where the footbridge and pedestrian are represented by the Euler beam and linear oscillator model, respectively. The derived coupled equation of motion is a nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation. An uncoupled solution strategy based on the combined weighted residual and perturbation method) is proposed to reduce the tedious computation, which allows the separate integration between the bridge and pedestrian subsystems. The theoretical study demonstrates that the pedestrian subsystem can be treated as a structural system with added mass, damping, and stiffness. The analysis procedure is then applied to a case study under the conditions of single pedestrian and multi pedestrians, and the results are validated and compared numerically. For convenient vibration design of a footbridge, the simplified peak acceleration formula and the idea of decoupling problem are thus proposed.

Collapse of bridges in recent earthquakes demonstrates the need to deepen the understanding of the behaviour of these structures against seismic actions. This paper presents a highly detailed numerical model of an actual bridge subjected to extreme seismic action which results in its collapse. Normally, nonlinear numerical models have high difficulties to achieve convergence when reinforced concrete is intended to be represented. The main objective of this work is to determine the efficiency of different passive control strategies to prevent the structural collapse of an existing bridge. Metallic dampers and seismic isolation by decoupling the mass were evaluated. The response is evaluated not only in terms of reduction of displacements, but also in increasing of shear force and axial force in key elements, which can be a negative characteristic of the systems studied. It can be concluded that the use of a metallic damper significantly reduces the horizontal displacements and ensures the integrity of the structure from extreme seismic actions. Moreover, the isolation of the deck, which in principle seems to be the most effective solution to protect existing bridges, proves inadequate for the case analysed due to its dynamic characteristics and its particular geometry and an unpredictable type of axial pounding in the columns. This unexpected effect on the isolation system would have been impossible to identify with simplified models.
