As the machining depth increases, the drilling torque increases and fluctuates and the risk of drill failure also increases. Hence, drilling torque control is very important to prevent the drill from failure. In this study, a PID controller was designed to control the drilling torque in a machining center. The plant including the feed drive system, cutting process, and spindle system was modeled for controller design. The Ziegler-Nichols rule was used to determine the controller gain and control action times. The root locus plot was used to tune the controller gain for a certain cutting condition. Also, suggested was a simple method to obtain the tuned controller gain for an arbitrary cutting condition not using the Ziegler-Nichols rule and root locus plot. The cutting torque control, performance of the designed controller and the effect of gain tuning on the control performance were examined.
Assuming that a given nonlinear function f : $\mathbf{R}{\rightarrow}\mathbf{R}$ has a zero $\alpha$with integer multiplicity $m{\geq}1$ and is sufficiently smooth in a small neighborhood of $\alpha$, we define extended leap-frogging Newton's method. We investigate the order of convergence and the asymptotic error constant of the proposed method as a function of multiplicity m. Numerical experiments for various test functions show a satisfactory agreement with the theory presented in this paper and are throughly verified via Mathematica programming with its high-precision computability.

This paper deals with approximate integral solutions to the one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks. Temperature is assumed to be the form of Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which can be separated to two sets of cubic polynomials for each hot and cold side of thermal boundary layers. Proposed approximate integral solutions are compared to the previous works of the approximate analytic solutions and show reasonable agreement. The approach, however, has benefits in mathematical difficulties, complicated solution form and unstable convergence of series solution founded in the previous analytic solutions. Solutions for a semi-infinite region, which have simple closed form solutions, give close agreement to those for a finite region. Thermocline thickness is obtained in closed form and shows proportional behavior to the square root of time and inverse proportional behavior to the square root of flow rate.

In this paper we study the consensus problem of SISO (Single-Input Single-Output) linear multi-agent systems under a fixed weighted undirected network communication. The dynamics of each agent can be of any order, while it is constrained to be neutrally stable. Based on a simple root locus argument, we show that the problem at hand is always solvable if the gain and zeros of the dynamic compensator, of which dimension is the same as the number of plant poles on the imaginary axis, are chosen suitably, finally the result is successfully verified by an example.

This paper presents a procedure for the frequency-domain analysis of a non-proportionally damped structure subjected to stationary seismic loads and for the finding of proper damper locations through simple analysis procedure without iteration. The shear areas of the dampers are decided in proportion to the magnitude of the components of the primary mode shape vector and to the root mean square values of the story drifts, The root-mean-squear responses are obtained using a power spectral density function for the ground acceleration. the results are compared with those obtained from damper placement decided in sequency based on the maximum story drift. According to the results the reliability of the proposed method turns out to be satisfactory compared to the methods which required iteration.

Purpose: In an amputated auricle, a microvascular anastomosis is the best treatment of choice. But, the neartotally amputated auricle which is connected by very narrow tissue pedicle to the head, can survive by simple attachment without a microvascular anastomosis owing to the rich vascular network through the superficial temporal artery and posterior auricular artery. In cases of venous congestion resulting from a lack of vein anastomosis, medical leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) can solve the problem. We are reporting the case of a 6-year-old boy who had a neartotally amputated auricle with successful results by simple closure and medical leech treatment without a microvascular anastomosis. Methods: A 6-year-old male patient had an left auricular injury by an escalator accident. The left auricle was neartotally amputated from the temporal head with connection only by very narrow skin and subcutaneous pedicle (about 1 cm in width) at the helical root of upper and anterior part of auricle. Marginal bleeding from the avulsed auricle was noted and the arterial blood was supplied from a branch of upper auricular branch of the superficial temporal artery. The auricle was repaired by simple closure including cartilage and skin without any vascular anastomosis. After simple closure, the auricle showed good circulation with pink color. But on the 2nd day after the operation, there was a venous congestion with severe swelling, which resulted in a purplish colored auricle. The venous congestion disappeared after using medical leeches by the 5th day after the operation. Results: The repaired auricle showed aesthetically and functionally satisfactory result with normal development at the 9 months follow-up check after the operation. Conclusion: In cases of neartotally amputated auricles of children or crushing injury in which microsurgery is difficult, we can try simple closure with the use of medical leeches in treating a of venous congestion for a successful result.

Root-dipping inoculation method has been widely used to determine the resistance of watermelon to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum causing Fusarium wilt. Although this method leads to the precise results of plant disease responses, more rapid and efficient assay methods have been still required because the root-dipping inoculation method is labor-intensive and time-consuming. In this study, we established a simple and effective bioassay method based on the comparison of various inoculation methods and growth conditions. To develop the system, the occurrence of Fusarium wilt on four resistant and susceptible cultivars was investigated by four different inoculation methods, root-dipping, scalpel, tip and soil-drenching methods. Of these inoculation methods, scalpel method resulted in clear plant disease resistance responses with the simplicity. With the use of scalpel method, we also explored the disease development of the cultivars depending on inoculum concentration, growth stage of seedlings, and incubation temperature after inoculation. Furthermore, we found that the resistance degrees of 23 cultivars derived by scalpel inoculation method were similar to the results by root-dipping method established previously.
There are many types of grid-connected inverter controllers; Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF)-based controller is the most popular methods. SRF-based controller is capable for reducing both of zero-steady state error and phase delay. However, SRF-based controller has a complex algorithm to apply in real application such as digital processor. Resonant controller is also reduced zero-steady state error, but its transfer function has a high order. In this paper, a simple proportional control is applied for grid connected inverter with LCL filter. LCL filter is a third order system. Applying a simple proportional controller is not increased the order of closed loop transfer function. By this technique, the single phase model is easily obtained. To reduce steady state error, proportional gain is set as high as possible, but it may produce instability. To compromise between a minimum steady state error and stability, the single phase model is evaluate through Root Locus and Bode diagram. PSIM simulation is used to verify the analysis.
Images reconstructed with Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithm have been observed to have checkerboard effects and have noise artifacts near edges as iterations proceed. To compensate this ill-posed nature, numerous penalized maximum-likelihood methods have been proposed. We suggest a simple algorithm of applying edge detecting process to the MLEM and Bayesian Expectation-Maximization (BEM) to reduce the noise artifacts near edges and remove checkerboard effects. We have shown by simulation that this algorithm removes checkerboard effects and improves the clarity of the reconstructed image and has good properties based on root mean square error (RMS).
Let p, ${\ell}$ be distinct odd primes, q be an odd prime power with gcd(q, p) = gcd(q,${\ell}$) = 1, and m, n be positive integers. In this paper, we determine all self-dual, self-orthogonal and complementary-dual negacyclic codes of length $2p^{n{\ell}m}$ over the finite field ${\mathbb{F}}_q$ with q elements. We also illustrate our results with some examples.
