Intentional passive eruption combined with scaling and root planing of teeth with moderate chronic periodontitis and traumatic occlusion

  • Purpose: The aim of this clinical trial was to explore the impact of intentional passive eruption (IPE) using occlusal reduction on the periodontal parameters of teeth with moderate chronic periodontitis and traumatic occlusion. Methods: This study was performed on 40 teeth from 16 subjects. At baseline, 4 weeks after initial periodontal treatment, and 6 months after IPE, clinical and radiographic examinations were performed. The 20 teeth in the test group underwent IPE using occlusal reduction, whereas the 20 control teeth did not undergone occlusal reduction. Results: All the periodontal parameters were improved by the initial periodontal treatment. The teeth in the test group showed a significantly greater decrease in pocket depth, tooth mobility, and marginal bone loss than did the control group (P<0.05), but there were no significant changes in the attachment level. Significantly greater improvements in all the parameters were observed in the test group after 6 months of IPE compared to 4 weeks after the initial periodontal treatment (P<0.05). Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, performing initial periodontal therapy combined with IPE using occlusal reduction was shown to be very simple and effective. Moreover, IPE would be helpful in improving periodontal parameters.

Global Hourly Solar Irradiation Estimation using Cloud Cover and Sunshine Duration in South Korea (운량 및 일조시간을 이용한 우리나라의 시간당 전일사량의 평가)

  • Computer simulation of buildings and solar energy systems is being used increasingly in energy assessments and design. For the six locations (Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Deagu, Gwangju and Busan) in South Korea where the global hourly solar irradiation (GHSI) is currently measured, GHSI was calculated using a comparatively simple cloud cover radiation model (CRM) and sunshine fraction radiation model (SFRM). The result was that the measured and calculated values of GHSI were similar for the six regions. Results of cloud cover and sunshine fraction models have been compared with the measured data using the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean bias error (MBE). The strength of correlation R2 varied within similar ranges: 0.886-0.914 for CRM and 0.908-0.934 for SFRM. Average MBE for the CRM and SFRM were 6.67 and 14.02 W/m2, respectively, and average RMSE 104.36 and 92.15 W/m2. This showed that SFRM was slightly accurate and used many regions as compared to CRM for prediction of GHSI.

  • The Miaos have their own peculiar and luxurious transtional culture a they have experienced repeated fusion into and resistance againt the Han Race or the chinese in their long and old history. And the traditional culture of the Miaos is abundant and diverse in several respects. Because it has taken root in foundation of their simple and native environment. it is embracing abundant and diverse contents. They largely used as the theme of patterns factual materials such as natural objects easily accessible in the natural environment. those related to marratives reflective of ethnicity, animals and plants symbolic of auspicious omen, peace, happiness and good harrest with prosperity and abundance. And they not only crossornamented natural patterns and geometrical patterns by combining them but also geometric patterns alone. It can be seen that Miaos represented patterns with exaggerated formation, overlapping and modification and the comprehensive, fomation of natural forms, abstract formation etc. Seeing the ethnic costume of Miaos investigated in these several respects by the standard of contemporary beauty it is thought that it has the infinite possibility of being used in contemporary fashion design on account of the characteristic of almost perfect costume.

Quantitative Analysis of Paeoniflorin from Paeonia lactiflora Using $^1H-NMR$

  • Paeoniflorin, the major component of the root of Paeonia lactiflora, was quantitatively analyzed using $^1H-NMR$ spectrometry. The quantity of paeoniflorin was calculated by the ratio of the intensity of the signals (H-9, H-10, H-2', 6') to the aldehyde peak of the known amount of internal standard, 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzaldehyde. These results were compared with the conventional HPLC method. The contents of paeoniflorin in P. lactiflora, which were respectively calculated by H-9, H-10, H-2', 6' in the $^1H-NMR$ spectra and HPLC, were determined $2.60{\pm}0.07,\;2.44{\pm}0.09,\;2.77{\pm}0.12\;and\;2.46{\pm}0.16%$. The advantages of quantitative $^1H-NMR$ analysis are that can be analyzed to identify and quantify, and no reference compounds required for calibration curves. Besides, it allows rapid and simple quantification for paeoniflorin with an analysis time for only 20 min without any preprocessing.

Evaluation of Denoising Filters Based on Edge Locations

  • This paper presents a method to evaluate denoising filters based on edge locations in their denoised images. Image quality assessment has often been performed by using structural similarity (SSIM). However, SSIM does not provide clearly the geometric accuracy of features in denoised images. Thus, in this paper, a method to localize edge locations with subpixel accuracy based on adaptive weighting of gradients is used for obtaining the subpixel locations of edges in ground truth image, noisy images, and denoised images. Then, this paper proposes a method to evaluate the geometric accuracy of edge locations based on root mean squares error (RMSE) and jaggedness with reference to ground truth locations. Jaggedness is a measure proposed in this study to measure the stability of the distribution of edge locations. Tested denoising filters are anisotropic diffusion (AF), bilateral filter, guided filter, weighted guided filter, weighted mean of patches filter, and smoothing filter (SF). SF is a simple filter that smooths images by applying a Gaussian blurring to a noisy image. Experiments were performed with a set of simulated images and natural images. The experimental results show that AF and SF recovered edge locations more accurately than the other tested filters in terms of SSIM, RMSE, and jaggedness and that SF produced better results than AF in terms of jaggedness.

  • Ramaria botrytis is one of the commercially important ectomycorrhizal mushrooms in Korea and the mushroom is only picked in natural forest. This study was conducted to make ectomycorrhizal synthesis of the fungus using Pinus densiflora seedling. Ectomycorrhizal types of the fungus were simple and dichotomous. Diameter of ectomycorrhizal root was $325-380{\mu}m$ and fungal mantle was subhyaline with $20-30{\mu}m$ in diameter. On the other hand, optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ and the fungus grew 5 cm on potato dextrose agar medium in two months.

A Rapid Method for the Measurement of the Absolute Activity of Carbon-14 in Pea Plant Tissue

  • A rapid method for the measurement of the absolute activity of carbon-14 in cotyledons and root of etiolated pea seedlings has been developed. Fresh tissue was frozen in liquid air, ground and suspended in gel phosphor and subjected to measurement for its radioactivity by liquid scintillation counter. Apparent activity of the suspended tissue sample calculated by counting efficiency value obtained by internal standardisation, was found to be related to absolute activity of the tissue, determined by flask combustion technique, by a constant factor. Once this factor is determined experimentally, analysis of C-14 lebelled tissue involves only fairly simple suspension counting by liquid scintillation counter. Present method appears to be applicable to other tissues tagged with C-14.

Sums-of-Products Models for Korean Segment Duration Prediction

  • Sums-of-Products models were built for segment duration prediction of spoken Korean. An experiment for the modelling was carried out to apply the results to Korean text-to-speech synthesis systems. 670 read sentences were analyzed. trained and tested for the construction of the duration models. Traditional sequential rule systems were extended to simple additive, multiplicative and additive-multiplicative models based on Sums-of-Products modelling. The parameters used in the modelling include the properties of the target segment and its neighbors and the target segment's position in the prosodic structure. Two optimisation strategies were used: the downhill simplex method and the simulated annealing method. The performance of the models was measured by the correlation coefficient and the root mean squared prediction error (RMSE) between actual and predicted duration in the test data. The best performance was obtained when the data was trained and tested by ' additive-multiplicative models. ' The correlation for the vowel duration prediction was 0.69 and the RMSE. 31.80 ms. while the correlation for the consonant duration prediction was 0.54 and the RMSE. 29.02 ms. The results were not good enough to be applied to the real-time text-to-speech systems. Further investigation of feature interactions is required for the better performance of the Sums-of-Products models.

  • 이동통신 시스템의 OFDM(Othogonal frequency division multiplexing) 신호는 큰 PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio)을 가지기 때문에 비선형 특성을 가지는 전력 증폭기의 효율 감소를 가져온다. 이러한 전력 증폭기의 비선형 특성을 개선하여 효율을 증가시키기 위해서 전력 증폭기의 역 특성을 가지는 디지털 전치 왜곡기가 이용된다. 본 논문에서는 제곱근 근사를 이용한 Look-up Table(LUT) 기반의 디지털 전치왜곡(Digital Pre-Distortion :DPD) 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방식은 복소 이득(Complex Gain) LUT 구조에서 입력신호의 크기를 구할 때, 기존의 테이블을 이용하여 제곱근 연산을 하는 방식보다 좋은 성능을 내면서 근사를 위한 테이블의 메모리를 필요로 하지 않는다. 또한 간단한 쉬프트 연산 등을 이용하므로 DSP 또는 MCU 기반의 DPD를 구현할 때 간단하게 구현 될 수 있다는 장점을 갖는다. 컴퓨터 모의실험을 통해 제안하는 제곱근 근사방식을 이용한 DPD와 기존의 방식을 사용한 DPD를 비교함으로써 제안하는 방식이 기존 방식보다 좋은 성능을 내면서도 보다 효율적으로 구현될 수 있음을 검증하였다.

Glandular odontogenic cyst of mandible: case report (하악골에 발생한 선양치성낭의 치험례)

  • Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an intraoral cyst originated from serre remnants which has incidence of rare frequency. Only 111 cases have been reported since Gardener first introduced it in 1987. The clinical features are the following components: cortical bone thinning, locally aggressive root resorption, non-painful swelling. The following recurrences rate are 64.3% in conservative treatment, and 0% in wide excision for instance, segmental or marginal mandibulectomy. So, its prognosis is similar to that of odontogenic keratocyst and ameloblastoma. Therefore, periodic recall follow ups are essential to detect disease recurrence. Here, we will report the first case of GOC diagnosed in our department considering with references. And we share this treatment experience because these aggessive lesions may be misjudged for simple dental cyst.
