  • Survivability improvement method for naval ship design has been continually developed. In order to design naval ships considering survivability, it is demanded that designers should establish reasonable damage conditions by air explosion. Explosion may induce local damage as well as global collapse to the ship. Therefore possible damage conditions should be realistically estimated in the design stage. In this study the authors used ALE technique, one of the structure-fluid interaction techniques, to simulate air explosion and investigated survival capability of damaged naval ships. Lagrangian-Eulerian coupling algorithm, equation of the state for explosive and air, and simple calculation method for explosive loading were also reviewed. It is shown that air explosion analysis using ALE technique can evaluate structural damage after being attacked. This procedure can be applied to the real structural design quantitatively by calculating surviving time and probability.

  • Selecting relevant variables for a statistical model is very important in regression analysis. Recently, variable selection methods using a penalized likelihood have been widely studied in various regression models. The main advantage of these methods is that they select important variables and estimate the regression coefficients of the covariates, simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a simple procedure based on a penalized h-likelihood (HL) for variable selection in Poisson hierarchical generalized linear models (HGLMs) for correlated count data. For this we consider three penalty functions (LASSO, SCAD and HL), and derive the corresponding variable-selection procedures. The proposed method is illustrated using a practical example.

  • After making the surgical treatment plan, the surgical movements are duplicated in the model surgery. During this procedure, reference points and lines are drawn on the base of the models over the dental arch, and sawcuts are made according to these marked osteotomy lines. This method requires more accuracy for better postsurgical results in that the surgical splint which enables the surgeon to position the jaws intraoperatively is made from the casts as repositioned by the model surgery, and finally it will define the postsurgical results. This technique, however, has been found to be inexact, especially when the jaws are moved in several dimensions simultaneously. To overcome this, different methods have been developed for an accurate repositioning of the jaws as planned. A new appliance, Surgical Jaw Relator, was devised by the author for the simple 3-dimensional relocation of the upper and lower models, resulting in the easy construction of the splints such as centric relation splint, intermediate and final splint. This article describes an introduction and a clinical application of this appliance.

  • Once a submasseteric space infection is diagnosed, the key to resolving the infection is via surgical intervention to evacuate the pus. Although it is possible and occasionally practical to drain the submasseteric space via an intraoral approach, an extraoral approach may sometimes be required. Surgeons have encountered complications such as facial nerve damage during extraoral incision and drainage procedures, and they have felt that extraoral dissection was very difficult. As such, an easier and simpler technique is needed. Our department recently modified various drainage techniques for submasseteric space abscesses. Damage to the marginal branch of the facial nerve did not occur, and this technique was very simple and rapid, such that a novice physician could perform this procedure. This modified technique was possible with trismus and under local anesthesia. After intraorally checking the position of the drain, the intraoral wound is closed with an absorbable suture and the drain is fixed to the extraoral skin. When a masseteric space infection is diagnosed, multiple space involvement is ruled out, and dependent drainage is required, this modified drainage technique can be useful.

  • Oral appliance therapy is a simple, reversible way for improving snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnea. It may be indicated for the patients who are unable to tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or who have potential risks for surgical intervention. Oral appliance therapy increases airway space by the providing stable anterior positioning of the mandible, pulling out tongue, lifting up soft palate, or changing the muscle activity of the genioglossus. Currently, more than 80 different types of oral appliances have been introduced for snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnea. They are classified by their characteristics such as mode of action, adjustability and material used. This article provides a detailed clinical protocol and treatment procedure for oral appliance therapy.

  • Torque is proportional to the rate of change of inductance in a switched reluctance motor (SRM), and hence, phase inductance is an important parameter in determining the behavior of an SRM. Therefore, the accurate prediction of inductance with respect to rotor position makes a significant contribution to designing an SRM and its analytical approach is not straightforward due to nonlinear flux distribution. Although several different approaches using a finite element analysis (FEA) or curve-fitting tool have been employed to compute phase inductance [2-5], they are not suitable for a simple design procedure because the FEA necessitates a large amount of time in both modeling and solving with complexity for every motor design, and the curve-fitting requires the data of flux linkage from either an experimental test or an FEA simulation. In this paper, phase inductance is predicted by means of a permeance method, and the proposed approach is analytically verified in terms of the accuracy of estimated inductance compared to inductance obtained by FEA.

  • In this paper, we introduce a procedure to obtain a equivalent circuit of comb-line band pass filter. By employing equivalent circuits of each asymmetrical coupled line. we composed the full equivalent circuit of comb-line bandpass filter and derived simple design equations for extracting each line's impedance. To show the validity of design equations, we simulated and fabricated a planar type comb-line bandpass filter, which has center frequency 1.8㎓, band-width 50㎒ and four resonators. The resulting filter is very compact, have broad stop band with the second pass band centered at four times the center frequency of the first pass band. The experimental results show exact performances of design specification.

  • In this paper, we present a new morphological texture spectrum approach to obtain a surface orientation using the variation of texture image caused by projective distortions. Under the assumption that the surface of texture image is smooth continuous, and specially plane or sphere, we apply the mathematical morphology and texture spectrum in order to compute the 3-D surface orientation. If the surface of texture image is plane, the surface orientation can be obtained through a simple procedure. If the surface of texture image is sphere, we find the centroids of texels, and may compute several major axes, their slopes, and vanishing points. Using the texture spectrum between the intersections of the vanishing points and the size of elements in each texels, we can find the surface orientation of texels on the sphere.

  • Tyrosine is a monohydrolic aromatic amino acid and DOPA is a tyrosine derivative containing dihydroxy group. DOPA can be synthesized from tyrosine by enzymatic reaction. The separation and quantitative determination of each component are very difficult in the reaction mixture. In the present study, two wavelengths giving maximum absorbance difference of each amino acid were determined using UV/VIS spectrophotometer by wavelength scanning and simple assay method was developed for the analysis of the reaction mixture of tyrosine and DOPA by measuring absorbances of reaction mixture. This method can be simply used for the analysis of the tyrosine and DOPA mixture because it does not require and procedure for the pretreatment of the reaction mixture.

  • An alternative way of constructing ancestral graphs, which is different from the coalescent-based approach, is proposed using population linkage disequilibrium (LD) data. The main difference from the existing method is the construction of the ancestral graphs based on variants instead of individual sequences. Therefore, the key of the proposed method is to use the order of allele ages in the graphs. Distinct from the previous age-estimation methods, allele ages are estimated from full haplotype information by examining the number of generations from the initial complete LD to the current decayed state for each two variants depending on the direction of LD decay between variants. Using a simple algorithmic procedure, an ancestral graph can be derived from the expected allele ages and current LD decay status. This method is different in many ways from previous methods, and, with further improvement, it might be a good replacement for the current approaches.
