  • This paper provides a frame-layer method for controlling bit rate of compressed video data in real time. Our approach is easy to operate and can store encoded video data in real time without deteriorating the quality of an image. To provide ameliorated and consistent visual quality, a new concept named SOP (Set Of Pictures) and a new quantization parameter variation control algorithm based on a second-order rate-distortion model 〔2〕 are introduced. The total bit-budget is allocated efficiently to cope with unpredictable recording time by using the proposed algorithm and it is distributed to each frame. In the end, we show improved and consistent video quality with experimental results obtained from C-model of a MPEG-4 (simple-profile) encoder.

  • Systematic geometrical variation method of hull forms, such as "1 -Cp", "Swinging" and "Lackenby" are widely used in the early stage of a new design from those of a similar parent ship, which shows a better performance through the model test and/or sea trials. This method is simple and easy to modify original hull forms without changing the main characteristics. The shape of the prismatic curie can be easily varied by these methods, however, the frame line shape in the body plan can′t be generated easily, when the section shapes are complicated or have discontinuities or the mismatch of the body plan and the stem and stern profiles. To overcome this drawback of the hull form variations, a simple and useful method has been proposed in the present study.

  • In order to check the necessity of seismic reinforcement for a great number of existing structures effectively, it might be desirable to introduce the multi-step seismic evaluation system. This paper presents close relationships between shear-to-moment capacity ratio of a member and seismic performance of structures concerned through the failure mechanism investigation in the view of geological and structural characteristics. Based on it, the simple seismic performance evaluation method has been proposed and its effectiveness was verified by comparing with the damage condition of structures damaged under Hyogo-Ken Nambu Earthquake.

  • This paper evaluates nonlinear response characteristics of precast concrete frame buildings. where plastics hinging occurs in the precast connection. Designs were developed for buildings of 5, 10 and 15 stories in hight for moderate seismic risk regions of the U. S. The responses of the buildings were analyzed using DRAIN-2DX and following Nonlinear static analysis procedure of ATC 19. The main variables of the analyses were the strength and stiffness of the connection. Also, for the analysis, the bi-linear response model, developed and inserted into the DRAIN-2DX program by Shan Shi and D. Fouch, was used. With the results of analysis, the deformation demands of the connection of precast concrete frame buildings are proposed by using equal-dissipated energy capacity. It was shown that the strength of the buildings as well as their displacement capacities decreased with the decrease of either the strength or stiffness in the connections. Therefore such changes also require reductions in the response modification factors for such buildings. However, if the precast concrete frame building has plastic hinging in the connection, and has a more ductile connection than the monolithic frame building, then no reduction in R may be necessary. The deformation demand required of the connection to achieve that condition is evaluated and a simple relation is suggested in the paper.

  • Various frame recovery algorithms have been suggested to overcome the communication quality degradation problem due to Internet-typical impairments on Voice over IP(VoIP) communications. In this paper, we propose a new receiver-based recovery method which is able to enhance recovered speech quality with almost free computational cost and without an additional increment of delay and bandwidth consumption. Most conventional recovery algorithms try to recover the lost or erroneous speech frames by reconstructing missing coefficients or speech signal during speech decoding process. Thus they eventually need to modify the decoder software. The proposed frame recovery algorithm tries to reconstruct the missing frame itself, and does not require the computational burden of modifying the decoder. In the proposed scheme, the Vector Quantization(VQ) codebook indices of the erased frame are directly estimated by referring the pre-computed VQ Codebook Index Interpolation Tables(VCIIT) using the VQ indices from the adjacent(previous and next) frames. We applied the proposed scheme to the ITU-T G.723.1 speech coder and found that it improved reconstructed speech quality and outperforms conventional G.723.1 loss recovery algorithm. Moreover, the suggested simple scheme can be easily applicable to practical VoIP systems because it requires a very small amount of additional computational cost and memory space.

  • Designer has recently required the supporting system to assist the design steps that are not simple and standardized. But, as it is often the case with many researches, the design support systems have the problems that the functional module's expansion and the flexible connection with the intelligent CAD System are insufficient. In this paper, we present a framework, EDSS Frame (Expanded Design Support System Frame) to improve in its problems. For the implementation of the EDSS Frame, we make the functional modules, the executable files and analyze a characteristic of the functional modules. Finally, we checked the cases that is generated. Through these works, we organize the algorithm of the running process in each cases. A user can make the process through the association of the functional modules. Also, we make the DLL files or algorithms for corresponding in change of the intelligent CAD System. User can make the additional file or algorithm for a new release of the intelligent CAD system. EDSS Frame can be used for the implementation of the design support system on a various fields, and assists a designer with the rapid reconstruction of the design support system through the continuous addition of the functional modules and the redefinition of the running process between the functional modules.

  • Amanifold is one of the essential subsea oil and gas production components to simplify the subsea production layout. It collects the production fluid from a couple of wellheads, transfers it to onshore or offshore storage platforms, and even accommodates water and gas injection flowlines. This paper presents the basic design procedure for a manifold frame structure with novel structural verification using in-house unity check codes. Loads and load cases for the design of an SIL 3 class-manifold are established from a survey of relevant industrial codes. The basic design of the manifold frame is developed based on simple load considerations such as the self weights of the manifold frame and pipeline system. In-house software with Eurocode 3 embedded, called INHA-SOLVER, makes it possible to carry out code checks on the yield and buckling unities. This paper finally proves that the new design of the manifold frame structure is effective to resist a permanent and environment load, and the in-house code is also adaptively combined with the commercial finite element code Nastran.

  • A series of tests on simple-welded plate specimens (SWPS) and T-stub tension specimens simulating some of the joint details in moment frame connections were conducted in this investigation. The effects of weld strength mismatch and weld metal toughness on structural behavior of these specimens were considered under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Finite element analyses were performed by taking into account typical weld residual stress distributions and weld metal strength mismatch conditions to facilitate the interpretation of the test results. The major findings are as follows: (a) Sufficient specimen size requirements are essential in simulating both load transfer and constraint conditions that are relevant to moment frame connections, (b) Weld residual stresses can significantly elevate stress triaxiality in addition to structural constraint effects, both of which can significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity in moment frame connections, (c) Based on the test results, dynamic loading within a loading rate of 0.02 in/in/sec, as used in this study, premature brittle fractures were not seen, although a significant elevation of the yield strength can be clearly observed. However, brittle fracture features can be clearly identified in T-stub specimens in which severe constraint effects (stress triaxiality) are considered as the primary cause, (d) Based on both the test and FEA results, T-stub specimens provide a reasonable representation of the joint conditions in moment frame connections in simulating both complex load transfer mode and constraint conditions.

  • Almost all the RFID systems in the 13.56MHz ISM band adopt the FSA algorithm as the anti-collision algorithm. The FSA algorithm is based on the slotted ALOHA with a fixed frame size. The FSA, though simple, has a disadvantage that when the number of tags is variable, the system performance degrades because of the fixed frame size. Therefore, this paper proposes a new OFSA. The proposed OFSA algorithm dynamically allocates the optimal frame size at every frame based on the number of tags in the reader's identification range. According to the simulation results, the system efficiency of the proposed algorithm should be maintained optimally. Also, the proposed algorithm always obtained the minimum tag identification delay.
