Micromorphological Studies on the Perforation Plate of Korean Hardwoods(II) - The Structure of Perforation Plate - (한국산(韓國産) 활엽수재(闊葉樹材) 천공판(穿孔板)의 미세형태(微細形態)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (II) - 천공판(穿孔板)의 구조(構造) -)

  • Perforation plate was observed in 78 species(45 genera, 25 families) of Korean native hardwoods using SEM and it was divided into three types, i.e., simple, scalariform and multiple perforation plates, Based on occurance of these types, the species examined were classfied into the following six groups : (1) 60species(35 genera, 21 families) having exclusively simple perforation, (2) 5 species(2 genera, 1 families) having exclusively scalariform perforation plates, (3) 4 species(4 genera, 3 families) having simple and scalariform perforation plates, (4) 2 species(2 genera, 1 families) having simple and multiple perforation plates, (5) 5 species(3 genera, 3 families) having scalariform and multiple perforation plates and (6) 2 species(2 genera, 2 families) having simple, scalariform and multiple perforation plates. Mismatching perforation plates were found in two species of Betulaceae, Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica and Alnus hirsuta and peculiar substructure between the bars of the scalariform perforation plate was observed in Betulaceae, Betula davurica and Cercidiphyllaceae, Cerdiphyllum japonicum and the vestured perforation plate was found in Quercus aliena.

  • Anatomical characters of secondary xylem in the trunk of Magnoliaceae, Winteraceae and Schizandraceae, including six genera and eleven species grown naturally in Korea, were studied to elucidate the relationship between genera or families. It is considered that among these families specialization in the perforation plate, the angel of end wall to the vessel axis, and diameter of vessel element, is in the order of Winteracae, Magnoliaceae, and then Schizandraceae. In Winteraceae, vessel elements have wholly scalariform perforation plates with very numerous bars. Among Magnoliaceae the peroration plates are scalariform with very numerous bars in Michelia, with few bars in Liriodendron, and with few bars or simple in Magnolia. In Schizandraceae, Schizandra shows scalariform perforation plates with few bars or simple perforation plates, and Kadsura shows almost simple ones.

Internodal Vessel Elements of Some Malvaceae

  • Internodal vessel elements are studied in 20 genera, 75 species and 33 cultivars of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis belong to the Malvaceae. The minimum and maximum length and diameter range from 79~466 and 14~88 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. The vessel elements are either cylindrical, fusiform, conical, clavate, oval, column-, drum-, fish and cup-like or erratic. Perforation plates are exclusively simple in all the species investigated, except occasionally scalariform in varieties of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. In most of the species studied vessel elements have predominantly two perforation plates or occasionally one and three. Adjacen side wall thickening is commonly simple and border pitted, mixed, scalariform, helical and reticulate. The vessel elements vary in their size, shape, number and inclination of perforation plates and adjacent wall thickening.

  • Anatomical features and cell dimensions of the secondary xylem in the stem of the korean Lauraceas including 6 genera and 12 species were investigated under a light microscope and scanning electron microscope. Key to identification among genera or species was made from the anatomical features and systematic correlation investigated. The stem woods of Lauraceae exhibit the following characters: (1) quite evenly distributed pores (diffuse-porous wood) (2) perforation plates simple or occasionally scalariform in the latewood vessels (3) almostly 2-seriate and heterocellular rays (4) abundant paratracheal-vasicentric parenchyma (5) oil cells. Especially, the appearance of simple perforation plates suggest the Lauraceae to be more or less advanced. It is considered that the series of specialization in the Lauraceae from the perforation plates and the height of rays is as LinderalongrightarrowNeolitsealongrightarrow(Machilus, Litsea, Iozoste)longrightarrowCinnamomum, and Lindera sericea is the most pribitive in the Lauraceae.

  • Anatomical characters of the secondary xylem in roots of Lauraceae, including 6 genera and 13 species grown in Korea, were studied systematically. Lauraceors members studied anatomically possess characters of the secondary xylem that are in the main more specialized than those found in the primitive angiosperm families. The specialized characters are as follows; (1) mostly solitary pores with some radially multiples, (2) mostly simple perforation plates and partially scalariform perforation plates in all species, (3) slightly oblique end wall of vessel element, (4) predominantly alternate intervascular pitting, (5) paratracheal axial parenchyma in all species, (6) heterogeneous II or III vascular rays. It is considered that the series of specialization in this family from the perforation plates and angle of end wall to the vessel axis is as follows; MachiluslongrightarrowNeolitsealongrightarrowLinderalongrightarrowCinammomumlongrightarrowIozostelongrightarrowLitsea.

  • This report observed for anatomical structure and identified species of small wood debris collected at Chungi-Hyankyo, Yunbuk-Chung, Jeju-Hyankyo, Teachung-Hyangkyo and Kwanduk-Chung in Jeju province constructed in a central period of Yi-dynasty, and now named as local cultral assets. 1. Sample of Chungi-Hyangkyo is gymnosperm with window-like pit, axial and radial cannal & dentate ray tracheid. This sample with identified with Pinus densiflora or Pinus thunbergii. 2. Samples of Yunbuk-Chung and Jeju-Hyangkyo are diffuse porous wood having small vessels with scalariform perforation plates scattered almost equally in annual ring, possess heterogenus ray parenchyma & banded apotracheal parenchyma. This sample is identified with Distylium racemosum. 3. Sample of Teachung-Hyangkyo is ring porous wood composed of big vessels of pore zone and compound vessels outside pore zone. It also has simple perforation plates, tylosis, homogenlls uniseriate ray parenchyma & diffuse parenchyma This sample is identified with Castanopsis cuspidata. 4. Sample of kwanduk-Chung is ring porous wood composed of big vessels of pore zone and compound vessels outside pore zone. It has simple perforation plates, heterogenus ray parenchyma, crystal, vasicentric parenchyma. This sample is identified with Zelkova serrata.

  • Perforated ray cells are identified for the first time in the Korean species of Deutzia glabrata, Deutzia sieboldiana, Hydrangea paniculata, and Philadelphus schrenckii that belong to Hydrangeaceae but not observed in Deutzia gracilis. These ray cells have simple to scalarifrom perforations in Deutzia glabrata which have vessel elements with scalariform perforations, and have scalariform to reticulate perforations in Deutzia sieboldiana, Hydrangea paniculata, and Philadelphus schrenckii which have vessel elements with scalariform perforations. Thus, the perforations of ray cells in Korean Hydrangeaceae appeared not to be exactly the same as the types of scalariform perforation plates in the vessel elements of same wood.

  • The comparative wood anatomy of 1 species belonging to genus Myrica of Myricaceae, 9 species to genus Populus and 8 species to genus Salix of Salcaceae, occurring in Korea, was described and coded according to IAWA list(Wheeler, 1989). Myrica rubra. of Myricaceae is a typical diffuse-porous wood with numerous vessels per $mm^2$ and its pores are mainly angular in outline. Vessels scalariform perforation plates with a few bars, very small inter vessel pits; axial parenchyma abundant, diffuse or diffuse-in-aggregates which is distinct and easily observed on cross section; rays 1-3 seriate, Kribs' heterogeneous I or II types, frequently contains rhomboidal crystals; Dark pigmented substances included in some rays and axial parenchyma. Salicaceae, a typical diffuse porous wood, has mainly radial pore multiple, large intervessel pits, distinct alternate pits, simple perforation plates, ray-vessel pits with circular large pits, uniseriate rays, marginal parenchyma composed of 1-2 layers. In some species, ray parenchyma contain crystals. Populus and Salix wood can be distinguished from one another by the following characters. Pores of Populus woods almost angular in outline. Uniseriate homogeneous rays slightly higher than Salix and long linear on tangential section. Whereas Salix woods appear the pores almost oval, uniseriate heterogeneous rays, which are smular narrow fusiform on tangential section and lower in height than Populus.
