  • ABS/silicate composites with different clay types and compositions were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization. The chemical structure of ABS was confirmed by the change of C-H stretching peak(near 3000 $cm^{-1}$) in fourier transform-infrared(FT-IR) spectrum. The thermal properties of the ABS/silicate composites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). There was no distinct change in glass transition temperature of the ABS/silicate composites with different clay types. TGA curve indicates a dramatic increase in degradation temperature in case of ABS/20A composite with 3 wt% 20A. The silicate dispersion in the composites was measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD). The silicate dispersion in ABS/20A composites depended on the 20A composition. XRD results showed that the diffraction peak of the ABS/20A composite appeared when the content of 20A was higher than 5 wt%.

  • Five eucryptite and ten spodumene compositional powders were syntehsized from three sillimanite group, two kaolin group, and five pyrophyllite group silicate minerals. Those powders were isotatically pressed and fired at 1200~135$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, and then the sintered bodies were characterized. Silicate minerals with molar ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 correspond to those of eucryptite and spodumene are kaolin and pyrophyllite group silicate minerals, respectively. Sintering characteristics of eucryptite from kaolin group and spodumene from pyrophyllite group mineral were superior to those from other silicate minerals. Eucryptite sintered bodies with 95~97% relative densities and densified microstructures can be obtained using Hadong pink kaolin as starting materials by sintering over broad temperature zone(1250~135$0^{\circ}C$). The eucryptite sintered bodies which were fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs, from Hadong pink kaolin had within 3.0wt% microstructural compositional variations compaired with stoichiometric compound, and had good negative thermal expansiion property with -3.55$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient. Spodumene sintered bodies which were prepared from pyrophyllite group silicate minerals, had dense microstructures and high densities by densification through liquid phase sintering with enlarged temperature range. The specimens which were fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs from Gusipyrophillite, had dense microstructure with crystallines mainly, and low thermal expansion property with 0.62$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient. The porous texture and residual glass phase in LAS system ceramics which were prepared from silicate minerals, tend to increase the thermal expansion properties of sintered bodies to positive direction.

  • The influences of various concentrations of thallium carbonate on the hydration of tricalcium silicate which is widely used to the inorganic materials have been studied using an isothermal microcalorime-ter. The experimental results indicate that the hydration of tricalcium silicate is accelerated in the presence of thallium carbonate, namely the concentration of thallium carbonate is increased, the rate of hydration is also increased. The x-ray diffraction analysis shows that the concentration of tricalcium silicate decreases rapidly in the presence of thallium carbonate. Differential thermal analysis of tricalcium silicate hydrated in the persence of thallium carbonate indicates the presence of calcium carbonate. The nonevaporable water content and the degree of hydration of tricalcium silicate show that the accelerating action of thallium carbonate is more pronounced only during the early period of hydration. Analytical results of the liquid phase in contact with the tricalcium silicate paste indicate that the concentrations of calcium and hydroxyl ions are changed considerably in the presence of thallium carbonate.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of barium silicate filler contents on mechanical properties of resin nanoceramics (RNCs) for additive manufacturing (AM). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Additively manufactured RNC specimens were divided into 4 groups depending on the content of ceramic fillers and polymers: 0% barium silicate and 100% polymer (B0/P10, control group); 50% barium silicate and 50% polymer (B5/P5); 60% barium silicate and 40% polymer (B6/P4); 67% barium silicate and 33% polymer (B6.7/P3.3). The compressive strength (n = 15) and fracture toughness (n = 12) of the specimens were measured, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were performed. Independent sample Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed on the compressive strength and fracture toughness test results, and the significance of each group was analyzed at the 95% confidence interval through post-tests using the Bonferroni's method. RESULTS. B6/P4 and B6.7/P3.3 exhibited much higher yield strength than B0/P10 and B5/P5 (P < .05). Compared to the control group (B0/P10), the other three groups exhibited higher ultimate strength (P < .05). The fracture toughness of B6/P4 and B6.7/P3.3 were similar (P > .05). The content of barium silicate and fracture toughness showed a positive correlation coefficient (R = 0.582). SEM and EDS analyses revealed the presence of an oval-shaped ceramic aggregate in B6/P4 specimens, whereas the ceramic filler and polymer substrate were homogeneously mixed in B6.7/P3.3. CONCLUSION. Increasing the ceramic filler content improves the mechanical properties, but it can be accompanied by a decrease in the flowability and the homogeneity of the slurry.

  • In this study, novel activated silicate grout solution for injection grouting was prepared by the reaction of ordinary waterglass with alkaline earth metal salts mixture by means of the high-speed stirring method with strong shearing force, and its chemical and physical properties were investigated. The variation of its gelation time plotted with the amount of dilution water showed that this novel silicate had better gelation characteristics in comparison with ordinary waterglass. And some other engineering characteristics of this grout such as durability and mechanical properties were investigated experimentally. The whole experimental results established that this novel silicate grout was a good alternative with an existing ordinary waterglass grouting method.

  • In this paper, etching characteristics of Zr-silicate in Ar/ClrCH4 plasma is studied, and possible plasma damage is investigated by fabricating MIS capacitors. We'could increase the selectivity to near 2 while keeping the etch rate of Zr-silicate to about 70 nm/min. Leakage current and flat band voltage shift of PUZr-silicate/si capacitors are measured before and after plasma etching. Using capacitor patterns with the same area but different circumference lengths, we try to separate etching damage mechanisms and to optimize the process. The leakage current of 1.2$\times$10-3 A/cm2 and smaller capacitance variation of 0.2 nF at -2V are obtained in Ar/Cl2/CF4 plasma at 200 W RF power

  • The kinetics and mechanism on the hydration of granulated blastfurnace slag-sodium silicate systems were studied by ignition loss, unreacted slag determination, XRD, DTA and SEM(EDS). From this experiment the following results were obtained. The amount of slag reaction was increased with the content of sodium silicate and also C-S-H, C4AH13, and C2ASH8 were formed to be the main products up to 28 days of hydration. Sodium silicate was not only an activator for slag hydration but also a binder in the hydration. The amount of slag reaction activated by sodium silicate was a nearly same for Ca(OH)2 activated slag, but it was smaller one than that activated by NaOH. However there was no difference in hydration products.

  • These are many kinds of self-hardening methods for sand mold using sodium silicate. When sodium silicate solution is mixed with calcium-orthosilicate powder hardening reaction occurs, which is based for self-hardening method at high temperature. The high temperature strength and resicual strength of mold are related to the mole ratio of sodium silicate and the contents of calcium-orthosilicate powder. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1) The high temperature strength of mold was maximum at about $600^{\circ}C$, and at higher temperature showed lower value on the contrary. 2) The high temperature strength of mold was increased by increasing the amount of sodium silicate having lower mole ratio and high concentration. 3) The residual strength of mold was reduced by increasing the mole ratio of sodium silicate and increasing the concentration of calcium-orthosilicate.

  • Ion exchange behavior and property change of soda-lime-silicate glass by advanced ion exchange process were investigated. Refractive index, specific gravity and optical transmittance were changed similarly to $K^+$ ion penetration depth, and amount of ion exchange increased with the increase of the time and temperature. Especially, thermal expansion decreased greatly because of the structural compaction and residual stress by ion exchange process.

  • The viscosity effect of matrix polymer on melt exfoliation behavior of an organoclay in poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated. The viscosity of matrix polymer was controlled by changing the molecular weight of poly($\varepsilon$-eaprolactone), the processing temperature, and the rotor speed of a mini-molder. Applied shear stress facilitates the diffusion of polymer chains into the gallery of silicate layers by breaking silicate agglomerates down into smaller primary particles. When the viscosity of PCL is lower, silicate agglomerates are not perfectly broken into smaller primary particles. At higher viscosity, all of silicate agglomerates are broken down into primary particles, and finally into smaller nano-scale building blocks. It was also found that the degree of exfoliation of silicate layers is dependent upon not only the viscosity of matrix but thermodynamic variables.
