The study on the atomic structure of iron-bearing silicate glasses has significant geological implications for both diverse igneous processes on Earth surface and ultra-low velocity zones at the core-mantle boundary. Here, we report experimental results on the effect of iron content on the atomic structure in iron-bearing alkali silicate glasses ($Na_2O-Fe_2O_3-SiO_2$ glasses, up to 16.07 wt% $Fe_2O_3$) using $^{29}Si$ and $^{17}O$ solid-state NMR spectroscopy. $^{29}Si$ spin-lattice ($T_1$) relaxation time for the glasses decreases with increasing iron content due to an enhanced interaction between nuclear spin and unpaired electron in iron. $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra for the glasses show a decrease in signal intensity and an increase in peak width with increasing iron content. However, the heterogeneous peak broa-dening in $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra suggests the heterogeneous distribution of $Q^n$ species around iron in iron-bearing silicate glasses. While nonbridging oxygen ($Na-O-Si$) and bridging oxygen (Si-O-Si) peaks are partially resolved in $^{17}O$ MAS NMR spectrum for iron-free silicate glass, it is difficult to distinguish the oxygen clusters in iron-bearing silicate glass. The Lorentzian peak shape for $^{29}Si$ and $^{17}O$ MAS NMR spectra may reflect life-time broadening due to spin-electron interaction. These results demonstrate that solid-state NMR can be an effective probe of the detailed structure in iron-bearing silicate glasses.
Silicate fertilizers known to be effective in improving the growth and density of zoysiagrass. Most silicate fertilizers being used in Korea are slag-originated silicate fertilizer, but some water soluble silicate fertilizers are commercially available recently. This study was conducted to know the effect of water soluble silicate fertilizer, on the growth of zoysiagrass and the change of soil chemical properties in Wagner pot and field experiment. Root length, fresh and dry weight of shoots and stolons, the number of shoots and stolons, total of stolons length and the $SiO_2$ content of internal plant were significantly increased by the $SiO_2$ content but chemical properties of the soil were not significantly changed by the $SiO_2$ content. The $SiO_2$ contents of 18 and $36{\mu}lml^{-1}$ did not show significance difference, and therefore a reasonable application the content of $SiO_2$ was thought to be $18{\mu}lml^{-1}$. Foliar spray of water soluble silicate fertilizer is believed to enhance the growth and density of zoysiagrass than soil application.
The $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ silicate was prepared by blending of $Li_2MnSiO_4$ and $Li_2FeSiO_4$ precursors with same molar ratio. The one of the silicates of $Li_2FeSiO_4$ is known as high capacitive up to ~330 mAh/g due to 2 mole electron exchange, and the other of $Li_2FeSiO_4$ has identical structure with $Li_2MnSiO_4$ and shows stable cycle with less capacity of ~170 mAh/g. The major drawback of silicate family is low electronic conductivity (3 orders of magnitude lower than $LiFePO_4$). To overcome this disadvantage, carbon composite of the silicate compound was prepared by sucrose mixing with silicate precursors and heat-treated in reducing atmosphere. The crystal structure and physical morphology of $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$/C nanocomposite has a maximum discharge capacity of 200 mAh/g, and 63% of its discharge capacity is retained after the tenth cycles. We have realized that more than 1 mole of electrons are exchanged in $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$. We have observed that $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ is unstable structure upon first delithiation with structural collapse. High temperature cell performance result shows high capacity of discharge capacity (244 mAh/g) but it had poor capacity retention (50%) due to the accelerated structural degradation and related reaction.

Zinc silicate ($Zn_2SiO_4$) has been identified as a suitable host material for a wide variety of luminescent activators, such as transition metal and rare earth elements. In particular, manganese-activated $Zn_2SiO_4$ exhibits highly efficient photoluminescenceand cathodoluminescence, which allows this material to be used in fluorescent lamps and display applications. In this study, we investigated the green and yellow luminescence from Mn-doped $Zn_2SiO_4$ thin films that were synthesized using radio frequency magnetron sputtering followed by annealing at $600{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$ The refractive index of the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films showed normal dispersion behavior. It was found that the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ ossessed a mixture of alpha and beta phases. The obtained photoluminescence spectrum consisted of two emission bands centered at 525 nm in the green range and 574 nm in the yellow range. The green luminescence originates from the divalent Mn ions in alpha phase of $Zn_2SiO_4$, while the yellow luminescence comes from the divalent Mn ions in beta phase. The films annealed at and above $900^{\circ}C$ xhibited only the alpha phase. The broad PL excitation band was observed ranging from 220 to 300 nm with a maximum at around 243 nm.
The synthetic conditions of $ ZrSiO_4-Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ stains from CdS, Se, $SiO_2$ , 4ZrO_2$ and Lif were investigated and the colors were examined. Colors of the stains prepared were yellow orange red pink ruby and violet in relation to both the content of CdS-Se in $ZrSiO_4$ and firing temperature. Colors of these series stains were thermally stabilized probably by the structural stability of zirconium silicate. Furthermore by the result of X-ray diffraction analysis it is assumed that color of the zircon cadmium sulphoselenide $ ZrSiO_4-Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ stain is developed by neither the coloring ions in $ZrSiO_4$ lattice nor the solid solution of $ZrSiO_4$ and $Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ but by the small crystals of $Cd(S_xS_{1-x})$ being occluded by the zirconium silicate during sintering process.

To elucidate the role of silicon in biotic stress such as pests and diseases, standard chrysanthemum was grown in pots filled with soil without application of pesticide and fungicide. Si treatment was largely composed of three groups: $K_2SiO_3$ (50, 100, and $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), three brands of silicate fertilizer (SiF1, SiF2, and SiF3) and tap water as a control. Si sources were constantly drenched into pots for 14 weeks. Application high concentration $K_2SiO_3$ ($200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) and three commercial Si fertilizers for 14 weeks improved growth parameters such as plant height and the number of leaves. In the assessment of disease after 4 weeks of Si treatment, percentage of infected leaves was not significantly different from that of control. After 14 weeks of Si treatment, however, the infected leaves were significantly reduced with a 20-50% decrease in high concentration ($200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of potassium silicate and all commercial silicate fertilizers. Colonies of aphid insect (Macrosiphoniellas anborni) were also reduced in Si-treated chrysanthemum, showing 40-57% lower than those of control plants. Accumulation of silicon (approximately $5.4-7.1mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight) in shoots of the plants was higher in Si-supplemented chrysanthemum compared to control plants ($3.3mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight). These results indicate that using potassium silicate or silicate fertilizer may be a useful for management of disease and aphid insect in soil-cultivated chrysanthemum.
Fine mullite precursor was prepared by colloidal sol-gel processes. Aluminum isopropoxide $[Al(i-OC_3H_7)_3]$ as a starting material of $Al_2O_3$ and silicic acid extracted by THF from sodium silicate as a starting material of $SiO_2$ were used. Sodium silicate was first acidified by dilute sulfuric acid to form silicic acid. ; followed by extraction using THF, Mullite precursor was synthesized by sol-gel processes from aluminum isopropoxide and sillicic acid considering the degree of extraction of Si and the removal efficiency of Na. The impurity content of silicic acid extracted by THF was below 0.04% Synthetic mullite precursor consisted of $3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$ and showd spherical particles of $0.05{\mu}m$ diameter and below 0.462% of impurites. The mullite precursor was characterized by EDS, XRD, TG/DSC SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy ICP and TEM.
Mullite powders were synthesized from the common solution of aluminum sulfate and sodium silicate solutions by the emulsion-hot kerosene technique. The reaction temperature and mechanism for mullitization and the characteristics of synthesized mullite powders were investigated. The effect of Na components introduced from sodium silicate solution on the physical property and microstructure of sintered mullite was also examined. It was proved that mullites were formed at 75$0^{\circ}C$ through the reaction mechanism of Na2O.2.2SiO2+3.3Al2(SO4)3longrightarrow1.1(3Al2O3.2SiO2)+Na2SO4+8.9SO3. Synthetic mullite powders consisted of the compositiion of 3Al2O3.2SiO2 and showed highly agglomeration of hollow spherical particles of 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter. The density and fracture toughness of sintered mullites were somewhat reduced because of the effect of a very small amount of residual Na components.
The optimum reaction conditions for the acid consuming capacity of aluminum silicate synthesized from the reaction of sodium silicate solution and potassium aluminum sulfate solution were investigated by Box-Wilson experimental design, and the micromeritic properties were examined by the means of BET $N_2$ adsorption, Hg penetrometer and methylen blue adsorption. The chemical composition of the samples were analyzed by gravitic method. The results were found to be as follows: optimum reaction temperature $54.7^{\circ}C$, both concentrations of reactant soln 15.7%, reactants molar ratio (Al/Si) 0.5 and drying temperature $65.0^{\circ}C$. The acid consuming capacity of the sample prepared by above optimum conditions was 68 ml and the chemical composition was $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3.6SiO_2{\cdot}3H_2O$. The relationship between acid consuming capacity and micromeritic properties could not found in the range of experiments. Therefore, it is assumed that the acid consuming mechanism of aluminum silicate depends on the neutralization of $Al_2O_3$ and buffer action of $SiO_2$ in sample.
