  • The addition of nano/micro silica into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) results in the improvement of the electrical properties of Silica-UPR composites. The surface, volume resistivity, dielectric strength, dissipation factor and dry arc resistivity of nano silica-UPR composites were found to improve significantly. The effects of the nano and micro fillers in UPR have been evaluated. They are presented in this paper. To evaluate the electrical properties of the nano & micro composites, all the measurements were done as per the prescribed methods in ASTM. It was observed that the addition of nano silica improves the electrical properties as compared to micro silica. The better dispersion of silica particles in unsaturated polyester resin enhances the electrical properties of silica-UPR composites.

  • The physical properties of silica-filled SBR compounds (WSBR) prepared using silica-SBR wet masterbatches (WMB) were systematically investigated to understand the effect of the surface treatment of silica on the reinforcement performance of SBR. Treatment of silica with bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide (TESPT) in the liquid phase, followed by mixing with an SBR solution and recovery by water stripping, easily produced silica-SBR WMB. However, insufficient surface treatment in terms of the amount and stability of the incorporated TESPT led to considerable silica loss and inevitable TESPT elution. Pretreatment of silica in the gas phase with TESPT and another organic material that enabled the formation of organic networks among the silica particles on the surface provided hydrophobated silica, which could be used to produce silica-SBR WMB, in high yields of above 99%. The amount and type of organic material incorporated into silica greatly influenced the cure characteristics, processability, and tensile and dynamic properties of the WSBR compounds. The TESPT and organic material stably incorporated into silica increased their viscosity, while the organic networks dispersed on the silica surface were highly beneficial for reducing their rolling resistance. Excessive dosing of TESTP induced low viscosity and a high modulus. The presence of connection bonds formed by the reaction of glycidyloxy groups with amine groups on the silica surface resulted in physical entanglement of the rubber chains with the bonds in the WSBR compounds, leading to low rolling resistance without sacrificing the mechanical properties. Mixing of the hydrophobated silica with a rubber solution in the liquid phase improved the silica dispersion of WSBR compounds, as confirmed by their low Payne effect, and preservation of the low modulus enhanced the degree of entanglement.

  • The rapid development of the automobile industry is an important factor that led to the dramatic development of synthetic rubber. The tread part of tire that comes in direct contact with the road surface is related to the service life of the tire. Rubber compounds used in tire treads are often blended with SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) and BR (butadiene rubber) to satisfy physical property requirements. However, when two or more kinds of rubber are blended, phase separation and silica dispersion problems may occur due to non-uniform mixing of the rubber. Therefore, in this study, we synthesized an SBR copolymer with the same composition as that of a typical SBR/BR blend compound by controlling butadiene content during ESBR (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber) synthesis. Subsequently, silica filled compounds were manufactured using the synthesized ESBR, and their mechanical properties, dynamic viscoelasticity, and crosslinking density were compared with those of the SBR/BR blended compound. When the content of butadiene was increased in the silica filled compound, the cure rate accelerated due to an increased number of allylic positions, which typically exhibit higher reactivity. However, the T-2 compound with increased butadiene content by synthesis less likely to show an increase in crosslink density due to poor silica dispersion. In addition, the T-3 compound containing high cis BR content showed high crosslink density due to its monosulfide crosslinking structure. Because of the phase separation, SBR/BR blend compounds were easily broken and showed similar $M_{100%}$ and $M_{300%}$ values as those of other compounds despite their high crosslink density. However, the developed blend showed excellent abrasion resistance due to the high cis-1,4 butadiene content and low rolling resistance due to the high crosslink density.

  • The development of the environment-friendly tire that meets the standard requirements according to tire labeling system can be improved through using highly homogeneous silica immobilized zinc oxide nanoparticles. In this study, a considerable amount of nanoporous silica was essentially added into nano zinc oxide to improve the physiochemical properties of the formed composite. The introduction of nanoporous silica materials in the composite facilitates the improvement of the wear-resistance and increases the elasticity of the tread. Therefore, the introduction of nanoporous silica can replace carbon black as filler in the formation of composites with desirable properties for conventional green tire. Herein, mesoporous silica immobilized zinc oxide nanoparticle with desirable properties for rubber compounds was investigated. Composites with homogeneous dispersion were obtained in the absence of dispersants. The dispersion stability was controlled through varying the molar ratio, ageing time and mixing order of the reactants. A superior dispersion was achieved in the sample obtained using 0.03 mol of zinc precursor as it had the smallest grain size (50.5 nm) and then immobilized in silica aged for 10 days. Moreover, the specific surface area of this sample was the highest ($649m^2/g$).

  • Since Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is normally carried at 1.1 bar pressure and at -163℃, special Cargo Containment System (CCS) are used. As LNG carrier is becoming larger, typical LNG insulation systems adopt a method to increase the thickness of insulation panel to reduce sloshing load and Boil-off Rate (BOR). However, this will decrease LNG cargo volume and increase insulation material costs. In this paper, silica aerogel, glass bubble were synthesized in polyurethane foam to increase volumetric efficiency by improving mechanical and thermal performance of insulation. In order to increase dispersibility of particles, ultrasonic dispersion was used. Dynamic impact test, quasi-static compression test at room temperature (20℃) and cryogenic temperature (-163℃) was evaluated. To evaluate the thermal performance, the thermal conductivity at room temperature (20℃) was measured. As a result, specimens without ultrasonic dispersion have a little effect on strength under the compressive load, although they show high mechanical performance under the impact load. In contrast, specimens with ultrasonic dispersion have significantly increased impact strength and compressive strength. Recently, as the density of Polyurethane foam (PUF) has been increasing, these results can be a method for improving the mechanical and thermal performance of insulation panel.

  • Hollow silica particles were prepared using sodium silicate and organic templates. Polystyrene latex (PSL) particles produced by dispersion polymerization were used as organic templates. PSL particles ranged from $1{\mu}m$ to $3{\mu}m$ in diameter were synthesized by adjusting the amount of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The PSL/$SiO_2$ core-shell particles were prepared by coating of silica nanoparticles originated from sodium silicate using sol-gel method. The organic templates were removed by the organic solvent, tetrahydrofuran (THF). Morphology of hollow silica particles was investigated with respect to types of the reaction medium and pH during the process. By changing the solvent from ethanol to water, hollow silica particles were successfully formed. Hollow silica particles with the uniform shell thickness were produced at low pH as well. The reflectivity of the as-prepared silica particles was measured in the range of the wavelength of UV and visible light. Hollow silica particles showed much better reflective properties than the commercial light reflector, Insuladd.

  • This study investigates the effect of the pre-mix cement to the physical properties of the concrete according to the various combinations of the binders and the silica fume types. The results are summarized as following. For the properties of the fresh, the fluidity in the case that OPC+cilica fume-blast-furnace slag is appropriate compared to OPC+cilica fume+fly ash. Expecially, it is favorable when pre-mix is used. The fluidity time of the A, B depending on silica fume types is favorable, but it is decreased on C. The air content depending on silica fume types is low when the fly ash is used. Specially, the air content in the case that pre-mix is used is low caused by the dispersion of the silica fume. For the properties of the hardened concrete, the compressive and flexible strength when the blast-furnace slag is pre-mixed are high, and they exceed OPC. The strength depending on the silica fume types is high on B, and the strength of the others is similar.

  • The physical properties of rubber compounds containing silica and siliane coupling agent in order to replace the carbon black and prepare for environmental regulation showed improved dynamic properties(rebound, heat build-up, $60^{\circ}C\;tan\;{\delta}$), but the abrasion resistance did not improve compared with the compounds containing carbon black. Also, curing retardation because of coherent structure of silica improved by the addition of DEG, but the mixing step change of activators did not so much improve the static and dynamic properties of the compounds containing high synthetic rubber, the status of mixing and dispersion showed that the compounds containing carbon black was much better than the compounds containing silica by TEM investigation.
