This study was investigated on the physical properties of synthetic rubber compounds containing silica and silane copuled silica. Surface area and pore volume of silane copuled silica appeared to be low compared with those of pure silica because silane coupling agent blocks the pore of silica surface during silanization reaction. Silica with large surface area and high structure showed the short scorch time$(t_5)$ and rapid cure rate. The silane coupled silica showed the shorter scorch time and more rapid cure rate than pure silica because of the of effect of sulfur in the silane coupling agent(Si 69), The high value of $N_2SA$ minus CTAB com-pared with surface area and structure of silica showed the high 300% modulus. Also, the surface area and structure of silica did not affected the amount of PICO loss that indicate the abrasion resistance but affected the amount of cut and chip loss.
Partially purified ${\beta}-fructosidase$ (inulase) from Kluyveromyces fragilis was immobilized on Tygon tube and aminoethyl-cellulose, respectively and both preparations were characterized. Silanization of Tygon tube in chloroform at $65^{\circ}C$ and treatment with 10 % glutaraldehyde were critical for the immobilization of inulase on Tygon tube, while 2 % glutaraldehyde was effective for the immobilization on aminoethyl-cellulose. The derivative of Tygon tube showed 11.5 units of inulase activity per g of dried matrix with retention of 22.5 % of original activity against inulin, whereas one of aminoethyl-cellulose showed 39.3 units per g of dired matrix with 53.4 % of retention. Studies of enzyme stability, pH and temperature dependences, and $K_m$ values are presented for inulase and invertase activities of both immobilized enzymes.
The purpose of this study was to search the optimal silane concentrations for filler- silanization of seven experimental composites. Silica filer was a 25micron crushed type. 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0% silane($\gamma$-methacrylooxypropyltrimethoxysilane)were added into silica-filler with weight percentage (wt%). Mixtures(silica filler/silane)were reacted at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 72hours, and crushed into fine particles those were used as fillers for 7 experimental composites. Monomer was a 3 : 1 mixture of Bis-GMA and TEGDMA containing 0.2% tertiary amine and 0.4% camphoroquinone for light curability. A ratio for mixing the monomer and filler was 75% and 25% respectively. Seven experimental composites was classified with the concentration of silane treated, and the specimen number for each test was 10. Specimens with 6mm diameter and 3mm height dimension for measuring the diametral tensile strength were destroyed with 1mm/min cross-head speed on Instron universal testing machine (No. 4467, USA). Shear bond strength was measured on the specimens bonded to bovine enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 1 minute Fractured surfaces were observed by SEM (Hitachi S-3200, Japan) among that of the highest values measured from each groups. Following results were obtained: 1. Experimental composites containing silanized filter showed the significantly higher diametral tensile strength and shear bond strength than the composites containing un-silanized fillers(Group1) (p<0.05). 2. In silanized filler composite resins(Group 2~7), Diametral tensile strength of Group 3 showed the significantly higher than that of Group 2 and Group 6(p<0.05). 3. Shear bond strength was higher in Group 3 than that of Group 7 (p<0.05)in silanized fillers composite resins. 4. Fracture surface was formed in resin matrixes on the specimens from composites containing the fillers treated with 0.5% 1.0%, and 1.5% silane. These results mean that the optimal silane concentrations are exist for each fillet with its size and surface area, and that 1.0% is a optimal value for concentration to coat the 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ filler with silane.
Purpose. This study aimed to assess the influence of various micromechanical surface conditioning (MSC) strategies with or without coupling agent (silane) application on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of resin- matrix ceramics (RMCs). Materials and Methods. GC Cerasmart (GC), Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), Voco Grandio (VG), and Brilliant Crios (BC) were cut into 1.0-mm-thick slices (n = 32 per RMC) and separated into four groups according to the MSC strategy applied: control-no conditioning (C), air-borne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide particles (APA), 2W- and 3W-Er,Cr:YSGG group coding is missing. The specimens in each group were further separated into silane-applied and silane-free subgroups. Each specimen received two resin cement microtubules (n = 8 per subgroup). A shear force was applied to the adhesive interface through a universal test machine and µSBS values were measured. Data were statistically analyzed by using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test. Failure patterns were scrutinized under stereomicroscope. Results. RMC material type, MSC strategy, and silanization influenced the µSBS values (P<.05). In comparison to the control group, µSBS values increased after all other MSC strategies (P<.05) while the differences among these strategies were insignificant (P>.05). For control and APA, there were insignificant differences between RMCs (P>.05). The silanization decreased µSBS values of RMCs except for VE. Considerable declines were observed in GC and BC (P<.05). Conclusion. MSC strategies can enhance bond strength values at the RMC - cement interface. However, the choice of MSC strategy is dependent on RMC material type and each RMC can require a dedicated way of conditioning.
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of various pretreatments when fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post is bonded to endodontically treated tooth with resin cement. Materials and methods: Canal shaping of FRC post (DT Light post, Size 3, Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, IL, USA) was performed on endodontically treated premolars at 1.5 cm from CEJ. Samples were divided into 6 groups of surface treatment after conventional washing and drying to the canal. Total of 24 FRC posts were randomly divided into 6 groups of surface treatment as follows: Group C: control - no surface treatment, Group A: airborne-particle abrasion (Cojet sand, 3M ESPE), Group S: silanization (Bis-silane, Bisco Inc.), Group M: universal primer (Monobond-plus primer, Ivoclar Vivadent Inc.), Group AS: silanization after airborne-particle abrasion, Group AM: universal primer treatment after airborne-particle abrasion. Pretreated fiber posts were cemented with resin-based luting material and photo-polymerized and cut to the thickness of 1 mm. Push-out test using a universal testing machine was performed. Bonding failure strength of post dislodgement was measured and the type of bonding failure was classified. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple comparison groups were performed using Tukey HSD value of rank test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Group AS showed significantly highest bonding strength. Group S, group AM, group A, and group M showed lower bonding strength in order. The control group showed the lowest bonding strength. Conclusion: Surface treatment with silane showed to be the most effective of the surface pretreatment methods for cementation of FRC post. Surface treatment with universal primer showed no significant difference compared with no surface treatment group as for bonding strength.
Density functional calculations have been performed for the reactions of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane with silica surfaces. The (100) and (111) surfaces of ${\beta}-cristobalite$ are used as two possible models of the hydroxylated amorphous silica surface. This is the crystalline phase of silica with density and refractive index closest to those of amorphous silica. Moreover, two ${\beta}-cristobalite$ surfaces have the two types of silanol groups, namely the single silanols and the geminal silanols. We investigate the possible adsorption structure and formation energy of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane molecules with two type of silanol groups. The results will be compared with cluster and slab model.

In this study, in order to improve the thermal and electrical properties of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), surface modifications of GNPs are conducted using silane coupling agents. Three silane coupling agents, i.e. 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)-ethyltrimethoxysilane (ETMOS), 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTS), and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), were used. Among theses, GPTMS exhibits the best modification performance for fabricating GNP-incorporated epoxy composites. The effect of the silanization is evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrical and thermal conductivities are characterized. The epoxy/silanized GNPs exhibits higher thermal and electrical properties than the epoxy/raw GNPs due to the improved dispersion state of the GNPs in the epoxy matrix. The TEM microphotographs and Turbiscan data demonstrate that the silane molecules grafted onto the GNP surface improve the GNP dispersion in the epoxy.
We functionalized a wear-resistant carbon-based MoS2 filler to solve its limited wear condition problem. The filler exhibits excellent lubricative properties. The surface modification of MoS2 was carried out using a (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) silane coupling agent to improve the low compatibility and dispersibility of the filler that generally degrade the performance of composites. A silane coupling agent was employed for the functionalization of MoS2, and its effect on the wear resistance of MoS2/Polyamide-6,6 was investigated. The silanization of MoS2 was identified by contact angle analysis and Fourier-transform infrared, energy dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The wear resistance of the composite was found to be improved significantly by the surface functionalization of MoS2.
Low molecular weight liquid butadiene rubber (LqBR) is a processing aid that can resolve the migration problem of tire tread compounds. Various studies are being conducted to replace the petroleum-based processing oil with LqBR. However, the effect of the loading time of LqBR in the compounding process on silica dispersion and vulcanizate properties is not well known. In this study, we analyzed silica dispersion, vulcanizate properties, and viscoelastic properties of silica-filled tire tread compound according to the processing aid type (TDAE oil, non-functional LqBR) and, silane terminated LqBR) and input timing. In the non-functional LqBR compounds, the 'with TESPT' mixing procedure showed excellent dynamic viscoelastic properties while silane-terminated LqBR compounds showed that the 'after TESPT' mixing procedure was good for 300% modulus and abrasion resistance.

Recently, the need for esthetic results has increased the interest for all-ceramic crown prosthesis. Furthermore, the development of zirconium core via CAD/CAM system has allowed the all ceramic restorations to be applied to almost all fixed prosthesis situations. But, the increased strength has been reported to increase in proportion with the bond strength of cement, and recently, the tribochemical system which increases the bond strength through, silica coating and silanization has been introduced. The purpose of this study was to compare the $Rocatec^{TM}$ system and $CoJet^{TM}$ system with the traditional acid etching and silanization method of the irconium based ceramic. The surface character was observed via SEM(X2000), and the bond strength with the resin cement were measured. 50 In-Ceram Zirconia (Adens, Korea) discs were fabricated and embedded in resin, group 1 was treated with glass-bead blasting and cleaning, group 2 was treated with 20% HF for 10 minutes and silanized, group 3 was treated with the $Rocatec^{TM}$ system, and group 4 was treated with the $CoJet^{TM}$ system. Each group was comprised of 10 specimens. The specimens were cemented to a $3mm{\times}5mm$ resin block with Super-Bond C&B. The shear bond strength was measured with the $Instron^{(R)}$ 8871 at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The results were as follows. 1. According to SEM results, there were little difference between group 1 & group 2, but in group 3 and 4, silica coating was detected and there was increase in surface roughness. 2. The shear bond strength decreased in the order of group 3(46.28MPa), group 4(42.04MPa), group 2(31.56MPa), and group 1(27.46MPa). 3. There was significant differnce between group 1&2 and group 3&4(p<0.05). From the results above, it can be considered that the conventional method of acid etching and silane treatment cannot increase the bond strength with resin cements, and that by applying the tribochemical system of $Rocatec^{TM}$ system and $CoJet^{TM}$ system, we can achieve a stronger all ceramic restoration. Further studies on surface treatments to increase the bond strength are thought to be needed.
