  • OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) communications system is very attractive for the high data rate transmissionin the frequency selective fading channel. Since OFDM has high PAPR(peak-to-average power ratio), OFDM signal may be distorted by the nonlinear HPA(high power amplifier). In this paper, we propose an improved dummy sequence scheme for reducing the PAPR in OFDM communication system. This method inserts each different dummy sequence at the predefined sub-carriers fur PAPR reduction. After IFFT, the OFDM data signal with the lowest PAPR is selected to transmit. The complementary sequence is used as dummy sequence. So, it can cut down the computation time and quantity because it dose not require the peak value optimization for finding the phase rotation factor and the transmission of the side information about the rotation factor unlike the PTS method.

  • In this paper generating algorithms of the conventional chaos code sequences and a new chaos code sequence derived from the real and imaginary parts of FFT of one chaos code sequence, and the time-frequency function characteristics of generated code sequences to measure the signal resolution, are considered. And two chaos based QCSK digital communication systems-one with two different chaos code sequences, the other with FFT of one chaos code sequence-are analyzed in AWGN and fading communication channels. After analyzing the correlation functions of such sequences, the delta-like autocorrelation and near zero crosscorrelation functions of them are very suitable for chaos based spread spectrum communication systems, is verified. Through evaluating the performance of two chaos based QCSK systems above using Monte-Carlo simulation, the improvement of performance in the latter QCSK system compare favorably with that of the former system, is shown.

  • For the development of a glucanolytic yeast strain. the seceretion of endo-1.4-$\beta$-D-glucanase (CMCase) of Bacillus subtilis was performed in yeast using glucoamylase gene (STA1) of Saccharomyces diastaticus. A 1.7 kb-DNA fragment of STA1 gene containing authentic promoter, signal sequence, threonine serine-rich (TS) region and N-terminal region (98 amino acids) of mature glucoamylase was ligated to YEp 24. E. coli-yeast shuttle vector. And then. CMCase structural gene of B. subtilis was fused in frame with the 1.7 kb-DNA fragment of STA1 gene, resulting in recombinant plasmid pYES('24. Yeast transformant harboring pYESC24 had no CMCase activity. So. we deleted TS region and N-terminal region of mature glucoamylase existing between signal sequence and CMCase structural gene in pYESC24. consequently constructed recombinant plasmid pYESC11. The yeast transformed with the newly constructed recombinant plasmid pYESC11 efficiently secreted CMCase to extracellular medium. After 4 days culture. total CMCase activity of this transformant was 44.7 units/ml and over 93% of total CMCase activity was detected in culture supernatant.

  • Purpose: To simulate and measure the signal intensity of various tissues near bone interface in 2D and 3D neurological MR images. Materials and Methods: In neurological proton density (PD) weighted images, every component in the head including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), muscle and scalp, with the exception of bone, are visualised. It is possible to acquire images in 2D or 3D. A 2D fast spin-echo (FSE) sequence is chosen for the 2D acquisition and a 3D gradient-echo (GE) sequence is chosen for the 3D acquisition. To find out the signal intensities of CSF, muscle and fat (or scalp) for the 2D spin-echo(SE) and 3D gradient-echo (GE) imaging sequences, the theoretical signal intensities for 2D SE and 3D GE were calculated. For the 2D fast spin-echo (FSE) sequence, to produce the PD weighted image, long TR (4000 ms) and short TE$_{eff}$ (22 ms) were employed. For the 3D GE sequence, low flip angle (8$^{\circ}$) with short TR (35 ms) and short TE (3 ms) was used to produce the PD weighted contrast. Results: The 2D FSE sequence has CSF, muscle and scalp with superior image contrast and SNR of 39 - 57 while the 3D GE sequence has CSF, muscle and scalp with broadly similar image contrast and SNR of 26 - 33. SNR in the FSE image were better than those in the GE image and the skull edges appeared very clearly in the FSE image due to the edge enhancement effect in the FSE sequence. Furthermore, the contrast between CSF, muscle and scalp in the 2D FSE image was significantly better than in the 3D GE image, due to the strong signal intensities (or SNR) from CSF, muscle and scalp and enhanced edges of CSF. Conclusion: The signal intensity of various tissues near bone interface in neurological MR images has been simulated and measured. Both the simulation and imaging of the 2D SE and 3D GE sequences have CSF, fat and muscle with broadly similar image intensity and SNR's and have succeeded in getting all tissues about the same signal. However, in the 2D FSE sequence, image contrast between CSF, muscle and scalp was good and SNR was relatively high, imaging time was relatively short.

  • In this paper, we propose a PAPR-minimized sequence mapping scheme that achieves the minimum Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and the minimum amount of computations for the OFDM system. To reduce the PAPR, the mapping table is created with information about block index and symbol patterns of the lower signal power. When the input data sequence comes, it performed division by the block length to find the quotient and remainder. The symbol pattern of the lower signal power can be found in terms of the block index as the quotient in the mapping table and transmitted with remainder as the side information to distinguish and recover the original data sequence in the receiver. The two methods with the proposed mapping scheme are proposed in this paper. One is with mapping table to recover the O%M signal in both transmitter and receiver. The other is with mapping table only in transmitter to reduce the load and the complexity in the mobile system. We show that this algorithm provides the PAPR reduction, the simple processing and less computational complexity to be implemented for the multi-carrier system.

  • This paper focuses on study on PWM converter control under unbalanced network condition. Voltage unbalance in a three-phase system causes the performance deterioration by producing 120 Hz voltage ripples in the DC link and 120 Hz ripple in reactive power. To eliminate the ripples, both positive and negative sequence currents should be controlled simultaneously. In this paper four PI controllers on synchronous reference frame is implemented to control D and Q currents in both positive and negative sequence. Positive and negative sequence signal extraction is done using delay signal cancellation method. Simulation results show satisfactory performance in suppressing 120 Hz ripples.

  • A new frequency-modulated m-sequence correlation technique was described. It has. been seen that the frequency modulation scheme leads to higher signal-to-noise ratio than direct sequencing and less hardware effort than PSK modulation scheme. The operating frequency of the correlation system was deduced. The optimal frequency for the frequency-modulated m-sequence correlation system should be 1.35 times of the center frequency of the transducer. The application of this correlation technique to electromagnetic ultrasonic system was computer-simulated.

  • Superimposed training (SIT) design for estimating of time-varying multipath channels is investigated for mobile orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The design of optimum SIT consists of two parts: The optimal SIT sequence is derived by minimizing the channel estimates' mean square error (MSE); the optimal power allocation between training and information data is developed by maximizing the averaged signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) under the condition of equal powered paths. The theoretical analysis is verified by simulations. For the metric of the averaged SINR against signal to noise ratio (SNR), the theoretical result matches the simulation result perfectly. In contrast to an interpolated frequency-multiplexing training (FMT) scheme or an SIT scheme with random pilot sequence, the SIT scheme with proposed optimal sequence achieves higher SINR. The analytical solution of the optimal power allocation is demonstrated by the simulation as well.

  • To manipulate large video databases, effective video indexing and retrieval are required. A large number of video indexing and retrieval algorithms have been presented for frame-w]so user query or video content query whereas a relatively few video sequence matching algorithms have been proposed for video sequence query. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to extract key frames using color histograms and to match the video sequences using edge features. To effectively match video sequences with low computational load, we make use of the key frames extracted by the cumulative measure and the distance between key frames, and compare two sets of key frames using the modified Hausdorff distance. Experimental results with several real sequences show that the proposed video retrieval algorithm using color and edge features yields the higher accuracy and performance than conventional methods such as histogram difference, Euclidean metric, Battachaya distance, and directed divergence methods.

  • As a biological model system for the production of an active antibacterial peptide, we have attempted the expression and secretion of insect defensin in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Nucleotide sequences encoding mature defensin composed of 40 amino acids were fused in frame with promoter and signal sequence of Saccharomyces diastaticus glucoamylase, and mating factor $\alpha$ l[MF $\alpha$1] prosequence. The host strain, S. cerevisiae 2805 was transformed with the resulting plasmid, pSMFll The secretion of functional defensin was confirmed by growth inhibition zone assay using Micrococcus luteus as a test organism. Insect defensin was secreted to the culture supernatant in biologically active form by glucoamylase signal sequence and mating factor $\alpha$1 prosequence. Most of antibacterial activity was detected in the culture supernatant. Defensin was also active against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes.
