  • In order to achieve the zero voltage regulation of the output voltage, the function control law will be used. In the previous function control law, only the proportional controller is used and the stability of the closed loop system was not analyzed. In this paper, for the realization of the control law, a new method to retrieve the low frequency component of the inductor voltage is proposed and analyzed. The large signal closed loop characteristics are alos analyzed to ensure the stable operation of the system disturbances. By using the function control law in the control system, the effect of the disturbance of the supply voltage is reduced in 93.3% for the direct dusty ration method. Also, in the effect of the disturbance of the load current, the output voltage has a logn recovery-time and is changed proportionally in the direct duty ratio method, but has stable in the function control law. Finally, the analysis shows that the disturbance of the output voltage being due to the supply voltage variation can be eliminated completely and the closed loop output voltage is insensitive to the disturbance of the load current. Therefore, it is proved that by using the function control law, the switching power supply with zero-voltage regulation output voltage can be realized.

  • This paper dealt with the development of a surge protection device (SPD) that can protect high speed computer network devices from overvoltages caused by switching operations or lightning surges. The designed SPD is a form of hybrid circuit which is composed of a gas tube having large current diverting capability, high response bi-directional avalanche diodes, and fast recovery diodes to reduce insertion loss on high frequency domain. Surge protection and signal transmission characteristics of the fabricated SPD was tested according to the international standards, IEC 61000-4-5 and IEC 61643-21. From the test results, the SPD is satisfied with the international standards and the high cut-off frequency was 204MHz. Also, the SPD showed a good performance without an insertion loss on a field test of 100Mbps class Local Area Network

  • We investigate compressive sensing techniques to estimate sparse channel in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) systems. In the case of large channel delay spread, compressive sensing may not be applicable because it is affected by length of measurement vectors. In this paper, we increase length of measurement vector adding pilot information to OFDM data block. The increased measurement vector improves probability of finding path delay set and Mean Squared Error(MSE) performance. Simulation results show that signal recovery performance of a proposed scheme is better than conventional schemes.

  • Fucoidan, a fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed in the class Phaeophyceae, has been widely studied for its possible health benefits. However, the potential of fucoidan as a possible treatment for hyperpigmentation is not fully understood. This study investigated the effects of fucoidan on melanogenesis and related signaling pathways using Mel-Ab cells. Fucoidan significantly decreased melanin content. While fucoidan treatment decreased tyrosinase activity, it did not do so directly. Western blot analysis indicated that fucoidan downregulated microphthalmia-associated transcription factor and reduced tyrosinase protein expression. Further investigation showed that fucoidan activated the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, suggesting a possible mechanism for the inhibition of melanin synthesis. Treatment with PD98059, a specific ERK inhibitor, resulted in the recovery of melanin production. Taken together, these findings suggest that fucoidan inhibits melanogenesis via ERK phosphorylation.

  • The neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is a synapse for signal transmission from motor neurons to muscle cells, has emerged as an important region because of its association with several peripheral neuropathies. In particular, mutations in GARS that affect the formation of NMJ result in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and distal hereditary motor neuropathy. These disorders are mainly considered to be caused by neuronal axon abnormalities; however, no treatment is currently available. Therefore, in order to determine whether the NMJ could be targeted to treat neurodegenerative disorders, we investigated the NMJ recovery effect of HDAC6 inhibitors, which have been used in the treatment of several peripheral neuropathies. In the present study, we demonstrated that HDAC6 inhibition was sufficient to enhance movement by restoring NMJ impairments observed in a zebrafish disease model. We found that CKD-504, a novel HDAC6 inhibitor, was effective in repairing NMJ defects, suggesting that treatment of neurodegenerative diseases via NMJ targeting is possible.

  • Systemic autoimmune diseases arise from loss of self-tolerance and immune homeostasis between effector and regulator functions. There are many therapeutic modalities for autoimmune diseases ranging from conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and immunosuppressants exerting nonspecific immune suppression to targeted agents including biologic agents and small molecule inhibitors aiming at specific cytokines and intracellular signal pathways. However, such current therapeutic strategies can rarely induce recovery of immune tolerance in autoimmune disease patients. To overcome limitations of conventional treatment modalities, novel approaches using specific cell populations with immune-regulatory properties have been attempted to attenuate autoimmunity. Recently progressed biotechnologies enable sufficient in vitro expansion and proper manipulation of such 'tolerogenic' cell populations to be considered for clinical application. We introduce 3 representative cell types with immunosuppressive features, including mesenchymal stromal cells, Tregs, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Their cellular definitions, characteristics, mechanisms of immune regulation, and recent data about preclinical and clinical studies in systemic autoimmune diseases are reviewed here. Challenges and limitations of each cell therapy are also addressed.

  • Purpose : A parallel imaging method provides us to improve temporal resolution to obtain three-dimensional (3D) MR images. The objective of this study was to optimize three 3D MRI techniques by adjusting 2D SESNE factors of the parallel imaging method in phantom and human brain. Materials and Methods : With a 3 Tesla MRI system and an 8-channel phase-array sensitivity-encoding (SENSE) coil, three 3D MRI techniques of 3D T1-weighted imaging (3D T1WI), 3D T2-weighted imaging (3D T2WI) and 3D fluid attenuated inversion recovery (3D FLAIR) imaging were optimized with adjusting SESNE factors in a water phantom and three human brains. The 2D SENSE factor was applied on the phase-encoding and the slice-encoding directions. Signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), percent signal reduction rate(%R), and contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR) were calculated by using signal intensities obtained in specific regions-of-interest (ROI). Results : In the phantom study, SENSE factor = 3 was provided in 0.2% reduction of signals against without using SENSE with imaging within 5 minutes for 3D T1WI. SENSE factor = 2 was provided in 0.98% signal reduction against without using SENSE with imaging within 5 minutes for 3D T2WI. SENSE factor = 4 was provided in 0.2% signal reduction against without using SENSE with imaging around 6 minutes for 3D FLAIR. In the human brain study, SNR and CNR were higher with SENSE factors = 3 than 4 for all three imaging techniques. Conclusion : This study was performed to optimize 2D SENSE factors in the three 3D MRI techniques that can be scanned in clinical time limitations with minimizing SNR reductions. Without compromising SNR and CNR, the optimum 2D SENSE factors were 3 and 4, yielding the scan time of about 5 to 6 minutes. Further studies are necessary to optimize 3D MRI techniques in other areas in human body.

  • Background : The Aim of this study was to compare the recovery of mycobacteria from sputum samples of pulmonary tuberculosis patients using the MB/BacT rapid culture system(Organon Teknika, USA) with that obtained using Lowenstein-Jensen solid medium. Methods : The two culture systems were compared using sputum samples of 99 pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Culture media were incubated at $35-37^{\circ}C$ for six weeks in the MB/BacT system and for 12 weeks in Lowenstein-Jensen solid medium. Solid media were examined macroscopically once a week, and the MB/BacT system positive vials were unloaded from the machine as soon as possible after positive signal from the connected computer was detected Confirmation of growth for mycobacteria was done by Ziehl-Neelson stained smears. Isolates were identified to differentiate Mycobacterium tuberculosis from mycobacterium other than tuberculosis(MOTT) by phenotypic and molecular methods. Results : Of the sputum samples of the 99 patients, 58 samples were smear positive and 41 in negative smear. Mycobacteria were recovered from 67(67.7%) samples by using both culture systems. The yield with MB/BacT was higher than that with Lowenstein-Jensen [67(67.7%) vs. 52(52.5%), p<0.001]. Moreover, 15(15.2%) samples were positive only in the MB/BacT, whereas none of samples was positive only in Lowenstein-Jensen. In smear-positive and smear-negative samples, the recovery rate with MB/BacT was also higher than that with Lowenstein-Jensen [sputum-positive; 56/58(96.6%) vs. 46/58(79.3%), p=0.005, sputum-negative; 6/41(14.6%) vs. 5/41(12.2%), p<0.001]. The mean times to detection of Mycobacteria were 13.3 and 27.2 days with MB/BacT and Lowenstein-Jensen respectively(p<0.001). Conclusion : This results indicate that the the MB/BacT is more efficient and faster than Lowenstein-Jensen for the recovery of mycobacteria.

  • This paper analyzes the performance of symbol timing recovery and equalizer in 8VSB digital terrestrial TV receiver under various multipath signals and proposes equalization techniques which improve indoor reception performance. Data segment sync is used for symbol timing recovery and timing offset is measured for echoes of various delays and amplitudes by using symbol timing detection filter whose pattern is +1. +1. -1. and -1. Measured timing offsets were below 10% for long echoes with more than 5 symbol delay and above 30% for short echoes with around 1 symbol delay. Indoor reception is always more challenging than outdoor reception due to lower signal strength. large and short multipaths. and moving interfering objects. So it is considered to use FSE (Fractionally Spaced Equalizer) which is very robust to timing offset and blind equalizer which can update equalizer tap coefficients even by information data. We compare the performance of conventional DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer) and FSE-DFE using LMS algorithm and Stop and Go algorithm for the indoor reception. Experiments reveals FSE has excellent performance for large timing offset and Stop and Go algorithm shows good performance for Doppler shift. so we propose to use FSE-DFE structure with Stop and Go algorithm for the reliable indoor reception.

  • Detection limit as well as calibration curves on organophosphorus pesticide(dimethoate, diazinon, parathion-methyl, fenitrothion, malathion) and BHCs were measured for evaluation of utility on qualitative or quantitative analysis of pesticides with ion Trap mass spectrometer and quadrupole mass spectrometer. As ionization source, EI and CI were adopted for qualitative analysis of pesticides by comparison of each fragmentation pattern. At the same time, the utility as trace analysis techniques through scan or selected ion monitoring(SIM) mode was evaluated. With ion trap for all pesticides, detection limit(DL, 1 ${\mu}L$ injection) on scan mode was ranged 0.008∼0.225 ng at signal to noise ratio 3. With quadrupole DL on scan mode was ranged 0.23∼3.1 ng over 0.032∼0.68 ng on SIM mode. The calibration curve with ion trap generated good linearity over 0.99 as correlation coefficient. As clean up procedure, Bio Beads S-X3 was used for the separation of oils from five organophosphorous pesticides in flour extractant showing more than 80% as recovery at most cases. In case of BHCs in jinseng with Florisil column, the recovery of pesticides has been 60% to 90%.
