The soil test data of 28 earth dams, scheduled to be constructed in Kore3, were selected for this study. The safety factors of their side slops were computed using Fellenius' "slice Method" by computer. The results summarized in this study are as follows; 1. Dam sections can be easily determined by fig.10 without a time consuming trial and error calculations of assumed sections. 2. For the economical design of earth dam sections, it was found that more cohesive soil was suitable for lower dams(dam height less than 25m) and soils with a higher friction angle was better for higher dams 3. In the case that used soil materials have the same Internal friction angle, side slope increase was almost same. 4. The relationship between side slope and friction angle was found as log.S=a tan ø+b (Fig. 7) 5. The relationship between side slope and cohesion (c) was also found as log. S=a c+b (Fig. 8) 6. The change of safety factors due to the change of central core materials was very little (Table-2) 7. The decrease of safety factors according to the unit weight increase of embankment materials was negligible. 8. In general the relationship between the wet unit weight and the saturated unit weight was r sat = (rt)$^2$+0. 140. This study will contribute to the determination of economic and safe planning and designing of earth dams, embankments and cutting side slopes.
PURPOSES : This study aims to evaluate the road safety of the super-elevation transition section of a left turn curve and suggest the minimum longitudinal grade of a super-elevation transition section to be used before and after a left curved section. METHODS : We evaluated the road condition by means of the safety-criterion-evaluation method involving side friction factors, and then solve the problem by introducing the minimum longitudinal grade criterion based on conditions described in the hydraulics literature. RESULTS : It was calculated that when a road satisfies hydroplaning conditions, the difference between side friction assumed and side friction demanded is less than -0.04. In this case, the safety criterion for the condition is unsatisfied. Conversely, when a road is in a normal state under either wet or dry conditions, it was calculated that the difference between side friction assumed and side friction demanded is more than 0.01. Thus, the safety criterion for this condition is found to be satisfied. After adjusting the minimum longitudinal grade applied to a super-elevation transition section, the hydroplaning condition can be eliminated and the safety criterion can be met for all sections. CONCLUSIONS : It is suggested that a minimum longitudinal grade should be provided on super-elevation transition sections in order to prevent hydroplaning.

In general, the air-side j and f factors of evaporators or condensers are obtained through single-design tests performed under air-dry and wet-bulb temperatures. Considering that the indoor or outdoor air temperatures vary significantly during the operation of an air conditioner, it is necessary to confirm that the experimentally-obtained j and f factors are widely applicable under variable air conditions. In this study, a series of tests were conducted on a two-row slit-finned heat exchanger to confirm the applicability. The results showed that, for the dry-surface condition, the changes of the tube-side water temperature, water-flow rate, and air temperature had virtually no effect on the air-side j and f factors. For the wet condition, however, the f factor was significantly affected by these changes; contrarily, the j factor is relatively independent regarding this change. The formulation of the possible reasoning is in consideration of the condensation behavior underneath the tube. The wet-surface j and f factors are larger than those of the dry surface, with a larger amount for the f factor.

The precision blanking of thin sheet metal is important process on production of precision electronic machine parts such as IC leadframe. In the blanking process, the factors that friction coefficient, tool clearance, material properties are the most important factors in the precision blanking process, because these factors affect the sheared face of product, side forces to punch during blanking process and surface condition after blanking process. So, many investigations have been performed. But, the former studies did not take up the characteristic of material. In this paper, in order to investigate the characteristic of blank, such as K(strength coefficient) and n(strain hardening coefficient), on the sheared face of blank and the side force to punch, FE-simulation has been analyzed by means of DEFORM-2D. To obtain input Parameters on FE-simulation, tensile and friction test has been done.

Enhanced tubes are used widely in the heat exchangers of absorption chillers. In regenerators, corrugated, ribbed or floral tubes are commonly used. In this study, the tube-side heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of enhanced tubes were obtained experimentally using the Wilson Plot method. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficients and the friction factors were the largest for the corrugated tube, followed by the ribbed tube. The heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the floral tube matched those of the smooth tube within 4%, which suggests that the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the floral tube may be accounted for properly by the hydraulic diameter. The B(e+) and g(e+) were obtained from the experimental data of the corrugated and ribbed tube. The B(e+) and g(e+) of the corrugated tube matched those of the existing correlation within 20%. The present results may be used for an assessment of the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the enhanced tubes for regenerators.

This study is performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of heat exchanger according to the arrangement of fins as well as fin configuration by using the four times enlarged model. Friction factor, Colburn j factor and goodness factors are compared to each other to estimate performance of each case for 4 different kinds of fins, which are plain, single side slit, double side slit and louver fin. Results show that heat transfer would be altered by fin arrangement and that friction loss is more affected by fin configurations than by the fin arrangements. In particular, heat transfer depends more on the shape of front row than that of rear row. The heat transfer rate of combined fin arrangement increases a lot more under the same pressure drop than that of conventional fin arrangement. This indicates that the heat exchanger of higher efficiency would be designed by the proper combination of fins, of different shapes.
An investigation on the fully developed heat transfer and friction factor characteristics has been made in rectangular ducts with one-side roughened by five different shapes. The effects of rib shape geometries as well as Reynolds numbers are examined. The rib height-to-duct hydraulic diameter, pitch-to-height ratio, and aspect ratio of channel width to height are fixed at e/De=0.0476, P/e=8, and W/H=2.33, respectively. To understand the characteristics of heat transfer enhancements, the friction factors are also measured. The data indicates that the triangular type rib has a substantially higher heat transfer performance than any other ones.

The effects of the inclined perforated baffles on the distributions of the local heat transfer coefficients and friction factors for air flows in a rectangular channel were determined for Reynolds numbers from 23,000 to 57,000. Four different types of the baffle are used. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55cm, and the inclination angle of $5^{\circ}$, whereas the corresponding channel width-to-height ratio was 4.95. Results show that the heat transfer and friction factor depend significantly on the number of baffle holes and Reynolds number. The friction factor decreases with increasing Reynolds number and the number of holes on the baffle, and the heat transfer performance of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the best value.
Drivers select approach lane according to various traffic situations as well as their destination. This behavior affects the utilization of lanes and capacity analysis at urban signalized intersections. This paper presents the concept, behavior of lane utilization, and the lane utilization factors which included in the study. Preparation of Korean Highway Capacity Manual (1992). Lane utilization is affected by various traffic and geometric factors which are roadway side friction, median friction, and number of lanes, etc. and it converges to an equal utilization as the degree of saturation (V/C ratio) increase. Lane utilization factor is suggested by the degree of saturation and the number of lanes, and it is presented in this paper.

New rolling speed prediction model has been developed for the precise presetting rolling speed of each finishing mill stand in the tandem hot strip mill. Those factors such as neutral point, work roll diameter, rolling torque, friction coefficient, bite angle and the thickness at each side of entry and deliver of the rolls were taken into account. To consider width effect on forward slip, calibration factors obtained from rolling torque has been added to new prediction model and refining method has also been developed to reduce the speed unbalance between adjacent stands. The application of the new model showed a good agreement in rolling speeds between the predictions and the actual measurements, and the standard deviation of prediction error has also been significantly reduced.
