  • The purpose of this study is to develop an effective method for automated deburring of precision components. A high power laser is proposed as a deburring tool for complex part edges and burrs. For the laser experiments, rectangular-shaped carbon steel and stainless steel machined specimens with burr along one side were prepared. A 1500 Watt $CO_2$ laser was used to remove burrs on the workpieces. The prediction of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and cutting profile of laser-deburred parts using finite element method is presented and compared with the experimental results. This study shows that the finite element method (FEM) analysis can effectively predict the thermal affected zone of the material and that the technique can be applied to precision components.

  • Introduction: Chronic subdural hemorrhage (CSDH) primarily affects the elderly, and its incidence is rising due to aging trends. Although burr-hole craniostomy is a common treatment for CSDH, it often has a high recurrence rate and can sometimes result in poor outcomes. Oryeong-san, a traditional Korean medicine, is emerging as a potential remedy, with documented cases in both Korea and Japan. Case Presentation: In March 2021, a patient was diagnosed with an intracerebral hemorrhage in the left basal ganglia. A subsequent brain computed tomography in June 2022 revealed CSDH. Given the potential need for surgery if no CSDH absorption occurred, the patient was treated with Oryeong-san. Later computed tomography scans indicated that surgery was no longer necessary. Conclusions: This study evaluated the efficacy of Oryeong-san in treating CSDH. The results demonstrated complete CSDH absorption with no observed side effects, highlighting Oryeong-san as a promising and safe therapeutic option.

  • We report a case of bilateral chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) in a 75-year-old man after exercise using a vibrating belt machine on the head. He suffered from headache and intermittent left side numbness for ten days. He denied any head injuries except eccentric exercise using a vibrating belt on his own head for 20 days. An MRI revealed bilateral CSDH. The hematoma was isodense on the CT scan. We made burr-holes on the both sides under local anesthesia. We identified the neomembrane and dark red subdural fluid on both sides. In the postoperative CT scan, we found an arachnoid cyst on the left temporal pole. Although the arachnoid cyst itself is asymptomatic, trivial injury such as vibrating the head may cause a CSDH.

  • In this paper, the mechanical characteristics of ultrasonic cold forged technology (UCFT) used for the trimming knife and the effects of ultrasonic vibration energy (UVE) into the trimming process on the state of the strip cutting face were studied. And a diagnosis system to quality control for trimming knife and strip cutting face was developed and installed in plant. By the plant application of UCFT, service life of knife was more increased over 100% than that of conventional knife. And using the developed diagnosis system, the knife breakage and saw ear have been perfectly detected and quality control of trimming face is obtained effectively.

  • Successive micro-scale V-grooves and a grid of pyramids were machined by elliptical vibration tufting (EVC) to investigate feasibility of using EVC as an alternative method of creating micro-molds to photo-lithography and electroforming, which have been commonly employed. An elliptical vibration grooving machine was developed which consists of two orthogonally-arranged piezoelectric actuators, a diamond cutting tool, and a motorized xyz stage. The micro-scale features were machined on materials of copper, duralumin, nickel, and hastelloy and it was found that EVC significantly reduces cutting resistance and prohibits generation of side burrs and rollover burrs, thus resulting in improving machining qualify of micro-molds in ail experimented workpiece materials.

  • An EP(Electrolytic Polishing)-MAP(Magnetic Abrasive Polishing) hybrid process was applied to remove burr on the micro pattern. Micro pattern fabrication processes are combined with micro milling and EP-MAP hybrid process for deburring. Depending on the micro milling conditions which are applied, micro burrs are formed around the side and top of the pattern. The EP-MAP deburring is used to remove these burrs effectively. To optimize removal rate and form error in the EP-MAP hybrid process, a design of experiment was performed. The effect of deburring process and form error of micro pattern are evaluated via SEM images and the results of AFM.

  • We report on a case of an 87-year-old woman who showed spontaneous resolution of a large chronic subdural hematoma which required surgical decompression. She had suffered from confused mentality and right side weakness of motor grade II for 10 days. The initial brain CT scan showed a 22 mm thick low density lesion located in the left fronto-temporo-parietal region with midline shift (12 mm) which required emergency decompression. However, because she and her family did not want surgery, she was followed up in the outpatient clinic. Five months later, follow up brain CT showed that the CSDH had disappeared and the patient became neurologically normal. The reasons for spontaneous resolution of CSDH remain unclear. We discuss the possible relation between mechanisms of physio-pathogenesis and spontaneous resolution of a large chronic subdural hematoma (CSH) in an elderly patient.

  • This This study aims to verify burr formation and to remove the burrs in micro-channel fabrication using micro-machining tools. The machining processes are combined with micro-milling and magnetic abrasive deburring for AISI316 stainless steel. Depending on the micro-milling conditions that are applied, burrs are formed around the side walls. Magnetic abrasive deburring is used to remove these burrs. AISI316 stainless steel is a nonferrous material and its magnetic flux density, which is an important parameter for efficient magnetic abrasive deburring, is low. To enhance this magnetic flux density, we design and build a magnetic array table. The effect of removing burrs is evaluated via SEM and a surface tester.

  • Objective : Density of the chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is variable. It often appears to be mixed density. Multiple densities of cSDH may result from multiple episodes of trauma. We investigated the frequency of mixed density and the causes of head injuries representing each density. Methods : We could collect 242 cases of chronic SDH. The cSDHs were classified into four groups; hypodensity, homogeneous isodensity, layered type, and mixed type on the basis of CT scans. Results : The density of cSDH was isodense in 115 patients, hypodense in 31 patients, mixed in 79 cases, and layered in 17 cases. The cSDH was on the left side in 115 patients, on the right side in 70 patients, and bilateral in 40 patients. The history of trauma was identifiable in 122 patients. The etiology could be identified in 67.7% of the hypodense hematomas, while it was obscure in 59.5% of the mixed hematomas. Conclusion : Mixed density of cSDH results from multiple episodes of trauma, usually in the aged. It is hard to remember all the trivial traumas for the patients with the mixed density cSDHs. Although there were membranes within the mixed density hematomas, burr-holes were usually enough to drain the hematomas.

  • This research describes that the cutting characteristics and tool wear behavior in the micro cutting of three kinds of wear resistant cemented carbides (WC-Co; V40, V50 and V60) using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) and PCBN (Poly crystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools by use of the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. The purpose of this research is to present reasonable cutting conditions from the viewpoint of high efficient cutting refer to a precise finished surface and tool wear. Summary of the results is as follows: (1) The cutting forces tend to increase as the increase of the weight percentage of WC particles, and the thrust forces was larger than the principal forces in the cutting of WC-Co. These phenomena were different from the ordinary cutting such as cutting of steel or cast iron. (2) The cutting speed hardly influenced the thrust force, because of the frictional force between the cutting tool edge and small WC particles at low cutting speed region such as 2$\mu\textrm{m}$/s. It seemed that the thrust cutting force occurred by the contact between the flank face and work material near the cutting edge. (3) The wear mechanism for PCD tools is abrasion by hard WC particles of the work materials, which leads diamond grain to be detached from the bond. (4) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the WC-Co, it seems that WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear, resulting in severe tool damage. (5) In the orthogonal micro cutting of WC-Co, the tool wear in the flank face was formed bigger than that in the rake face on orthogonal micro cutting. And the machining surface integrity on the side of the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was better than that with a positive one, as well as burr in the case of using the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was formed very little compared to the that with a positive one.
