  • This study deals with the proper conditions of the trail rolling method (TRM) for the prevention of the buckling welding distortion at the AA5083 GMA butt weldment. For it, the effect of the working conditions of TRM including the rolling depth and the rolling distance between the welding torch and the roller on the longitudinal welding shrinkage force of the weldment was evaluated by using 3 dimensional thermo-mechanical FE analyses. The longitudinal welding shrinkage force inducing the buckling welding distortion at the GMA butt weldment was mitigated with an increase in the rolling depth and the rolling distance between the welding torch and the roller. Based on the results, the proper conditions of trail rolling method were established to reduce the longitudinal welding shrinkage force of the GMA butt weldment to below the critical value corresponding to the bucking distortion.

  • TZP/SUS- and ZT/SUS-functionally gradient materials (FGM) were fabricated by pressureless sintering in Ar-atmosphere. The sintering defects such as warping, frustrum formation, splitting and cracking which originated from shrinkage and sintering behaviors of metal and ceramics different from each other could be controlled by the adjustment with respect to the particle size and phase type of zirconia. The residual stresses generated on the metal and ceramic regions in FGM were characterized with X-ray diffraction method, and relaxed as the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer were increased. The residual stress states in TZP/SUS-FGM have irregular patterns by means of the different sintering behavior and cracking at ceramic-monolith. While in ZT/SUS-FGM, compressive stress is induced on ceramic-monolith by the volume expansion of monoclinic ZrO2 at phase transformation. Also, compressive stress is induced on metal-monolith by the constraint of warping which may be created to the metal direction by the difference of coefficient of thermal expansions. As a consequence, it has been verified that the residual stress generated on FGM is dominantly influenced by the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer, and the sintering defects and residual stress can be controlled by the constraint of the difference of shrinkage and sintering behaviors of each component.

  • In the concrete st~uctures exposed to the environmental condition, the water movement is occurred by thc moisture difilsion, and the rnoisturrt distribution in concwt.c is nonunifhrm. Such a non-unif'orm moisture distribution causes tht. diflbrent.ia1 drying shrinkage in concrete structures. From this typc. of' dif'fercntial drying shrinkagr' tensiit-1 stress is occurred in exposure surface of concrete structures. and may result in crack formation. This residual stress is significantly affected by the creep of concrete, and the differential creep is also occurred at the cross section of concrete structures due to moisture difference at each locations. In this study, based on the moisture diffusion theory, a finite element program which is capable of simulating the moisture distribution in concrete was developed. And the analysis method for the differential drying shrinkage was suggested, in which the differential creep was considered. The differential drying shrinkage strain was also measured at various positions of concrete. Finally the validity of analysis method was proved by comparing test results with analytical results.

  • In Concrete, shrinkages occur like plastic shrinkage and drying shrinkage in the early age because of evaporation and transfer of moisture. Within the country, the crack test standardized by KS is used to test the drying shrinkage of the concrete by using the restricted drying shrinkage of Dumbbell type mold, but this test is for the cracking-point and the restricted shrinkage stress. Thus it is difficult to valuate the crack quantitative test. In this study, it is intended to develop the Flat-ring type restrained test method for the shrinkage deformation movement of the concrete and to provide the quantitative data for evaluating the cracks in concrete. And it suggest the proper specimen diameter and quantitative test method about shrinkage crack properties on Flat-ring type restrained test method. And Verified the suitability.

  • Dental composites have improved significantly in physical properties over the past few decades. However, polymerization shrinkage and stress is still the major drawback of composites, limiting its use to selected cases. Much effort has been made to make low shrinking composites to overcome this issue and silorane-based composites have recently been introduced into the market. The aim of this study was to measure the volumetric polymerization shrinkage kinetics of a silorane-based composite and compare it with conventional methacrylate-based composites in order to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing polymerization shrinkage. Five commercial methacrylate-based (Beautifil, Z100, Z250, Z350 and Gradia X) and a silorane-based (P90) composites were investigated. The volumetric change of the composites during light polymerization was detected continuously as buoyancy change in distilled water by means of Archemedes' principle, using a newly made volume shrinkage measurement instrument. The null hypothesis was that there were no differences in polymerization shrinkage, peak polymerization shrinkage rate and peak shrinkage time between the silorane-based composite and methacrylate-based composites. The results were as follows: 1. The shrinkage of silorane-based (P90) composites was the lowest (1.48%), and that of Beautifil composite was the highest (2.80%). There were also significant differences between brands among the methacrylate-based composites. 2. Peak polymerization shrinkage rate was the lowest in P90 (0.13%/s) and the highest in Z100 (0.34%/s). 3. The time to reach peak shrinkage rate of the silorane-based composite (P90) was longer (6.7 s) than those of the methacrylate-based composites (2.4-3.1 s). 4. Peak shrinkage rate showed a strong positive correlation with the product of polymerization shrinkage and the inverse of peak shrinkage time (R = 0.95).

  • The effect of the alloy systems Al-Mg alloy and Al-Si alloy in this study on the characteristics of die-casting were investigated using solidification simulation software (MAGMAsoft). Generally, it is well known that the casting characteristics of Al-Mg based alloys, such as the fluidity, feedability and die soldering behaviors, are inferior to those of Al-Si based alloys. However, the simulation results of this study showed that the filling pattern behaviors of both the Al-Mg and Al-Si alloys were found to be very similar, whereas the Al-Mg alloy had higher residual stress and greater distortion as generated due to solidification with a larger amount of volumetric shrinkage compared to the Al-Si alloy. The Al-Mg alloy exhibited very high relative numbers of stress-concentrated regions, especially near the rib areas. Owing to the residual stress and distortion, defects were evident in the Al-Mg alloy in the areas predicted by the simulation. However, there were no visible defects observed in the Al-Si alloy. This suggests that an adequate die temperature and casting process optimization are necessary to control and minimize defects when die casting the Al-Mg alloy. A Tatur test was conducted to observe the shrinkage characteristics of the aluminum alloys. The result showed that hot tearing or hot cracking occurred during the solidification of the Al-Mg alloy due to the large amount of shrinkage.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of instrument compliance on the polymerization shrinkage stress measurements of dental composites. The contraction strain and stress of composites during light curing were measured by a custom made stress-strain analyzer, which consisted of a displacement sensor, a cantilever load cell and a negative feedback mechanism. The instrument can measure the polymerization stress by two modes: with compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is allowed, or without compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is not allowed. A flowable (Filtek Flow: FF) and two universal hybrid (Z100: Z1 and Z250: Z2) composites were studied. A silane treated metal rod with a diameter of 3.0 mm was fixed at free end of the load cell, and other metal rod was fixed on the base plate. Composite of 1.0 mm thickness was placed between the two rods and light cured. The axial shrinkage strain and stress of the composite were recorded for 10 minutes during polymerization. and the tensile modulus of the materials was also determined with the instrument. The statistical analysis was conducted by ANOVA. paired t-test and Tukey's test (${\alpha}<0.05$). There were significant differences between the two measurement modes and among materials. With compliance mode, the contraction stress of FF was the highest: 3.11 (0.13). followed by Z1: 2.91 (0.10) and Z2: 1.94 (0.09) MPa. When the instrument compliance is not allowed, the contraction stress of Z1 was the highest: 17.08 (0.89), followed by FF: 10.11 (0.29) and Z2: 9.46 (1.63) MPa. The tensile modulus for Z1, Z2 and FF was 2.31 (0.18), 2.05 (0.20), 1.41 (0.11) GPa, respectively. With compliance mode. the measured stress correlated with the axial shrinkage strain of composite: while without compliance the elastic modulus of materials played a significant role in the stress measurement.

  • It has been well appreciated that reducing weld-induced deformation as law as possible is important during fabrication for a more efficient production of blocks. The weld-induced deformation is more serious in thin plates than in thick plates because heat affect zone of thin plates is wider than that of thick plates and in addition internal and external constraints much more influence upon weld-induced deformation of thin plates. This paper deals with the application of the mechanical tensioning method to butt weld of thin plates to reduce the weld-induced deformation. In order to investigate the quantitative effect of tensioning method upon the reduction of angular deformation and shrinkage in longitudinal and transverse direction of weld line, butt welding test have been carried out for several thin plate specimens with varying plate thickness and magnitude of tensile load. From the present experimental study, it has been found that the tensioning method is very effective on reduction of weld-induced residual stress as well as weld-induced deformation.

  • In recent years, flexible display devices such as liquid crystal display (LCD), organic light emitting diode (OLED), etc. have attracted considerable interest in a wide variety of applications. Polymer substrate is absolutely necessary to realize this kind of flexible display devices. Using the polymer as a substrate, there are lots of advantages including not only mechanical flexibility such as rolling and bending characteristics but also light weights, low cost and so on. In detail, thickness and weights is only one forth and one second of glass substrate, respectively. However, it needs low temperature below $150^{\circ}C$ in the fabrication process comparing to conventional deposition process. The polymer substrate is not thermally stable as much as the glass substrate so that some deformation can be occurred according to variation of temperature. In particular, performance of devices can be easily deteriorated by shrinkage of substrate when heating it. In this paper, pre-annealing and deposition of buffer layer was introduced and studied to solve previously mentioned problems of the shrinkage and followed shear stress.
