Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions such as high impact loading are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to varying dynamically leaded mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique with a special experimental apparatus can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate ]ending conditions. In this paper, the dynamic deformation behavior of a brass under both high strain rate compressive loading conditions has been determined using the SHPB technique.
The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique is widely used to characterize the dynamic mechanical response of engineering materials at high strain rates. In this paper, attendant problems associated with testing 70 mm diameter concrete specimens are considered, analysed and resolved. An adaptation of a conventional solid circular striker bar, as a means of achieving reliable and repeatable SHPB tests, is then proposed. In the analysis, a pseudo one-dimensional model is used to analyse wave propagation in a non-uniform striker bar. The stress history of the incident wave is then obtained by using the finite difference method. Comparison was made between incident waves determined from the simplified model, finite element solution and experimental data. The results show that the simplified method is adequate for designing striker bar shapes to overcome difficulties commonly encountered in SHPB tests. Using two specifically designed striker bars, tests were conducted on 70 mm diameter steel fibre reinforced concrete specimens. The results are presented in the paper.

It is well known that a specific experimental method, the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique is a best experimental technique to determine the dynamic material properties under the impact compressive loading conditions with strain-rate of the order of 10$^3$/s∼10$^4$/s. This type of experimental procedure has been widely used with proper modification on the test setups to determine the varying dynamic response of materials for the dynamic boundary conditions such as tensile and fracture as well. In this paper, dynamic compressive deformation behaviors of a rubber and an Ethylene Copolymer materials widely used for the isolation of vibration from varying structures under dynamic loading are estimated using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar technique.
Specifically designed mandrel is needed to expand tube of the heat exchanger with inner grooves. Configuration of the expanded tube depends upon the shape and feeding velocity of the mandrel. 3D simulation software LS-DYNA was used to obtain optimum design conditions of the mandrel. We show how configuration of the expanded tube varies with different design parameters such as the approaching angle, diameter , and the feeding velocity of the mandrel. Material property data for analysis were obtained through experiments with SHPB ( Split Hopkinson Pressure Bars ).

Dynamic deformation behavior under the high strain rate loading condition obtained with the aid of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique is simulated by DYNA2D (an hydrodynamic code). A constitutive equation such as Johnson-Cook model is used by adjusting various parameters to fit experimentally determined dynamic stress-strain relationship.

In this study, the compressive deformation behaviors of aluminum alloy under high strain rates were investigated by means of a SHPB test. An acoustic emission (AE) technique was also employed to monitor the signals detected from the deformation during the entire impact by using an AE sensor connected to the specimen with a waveguide in real time. AE signals were analyzed in terms of AE amplitude, AE energy and peak frequency. The impacted specimen surface and side area were observed after the test to identify the particular features in the AE signal corresponding to the specific types of damage mechanisms. As the strain increased, the AE amplitude and AE energy increased whereas the AE peak frequency decreased. It was elucidated that each AE signal was closely associated with the specific damage mechanism in the material.
The Wheatstone bridge is an important electrical circuit that is widely used to measure extremely small resistance changes in strain gages. The strain gages are attached to the structure or specimen whose deformation is to be detected. The Wheatstone bridge finds one of its major applications in the areas of static and dynamic strength tests for various engineering materials. In the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, for example, the bridge circuit is required to measure the dynamic strains of the incident and transmitted bars along which the stress wave propagates. In this article, the principles of the Wheatstone bridge circuit are in detail explained for easy reference during laboratory experiments associated with rock dynamics. Especially, the circuit arrangements of the quater, half, and full bridges are presented with their basic uses.

The split Hokinson pressure bar(SHPB) test has been used to find the mechanical property of materials at high strain rate. A tensile split Hopkinson pressure bar test system is developed and the threaded tensile specimen and the split collar are placed between elastic bars. When the compressive elastic wave generated by a striker is transferred from the transmit bar to the incident bar, some elastic wave is reflected at the threaded parts of the specimen and the transmit bar. This reflected wave can interfere with the transmitted wave. A proper length of elastic bars and the location of strain gage in these elastic bars are determined to avoid this interference. In order to avoid the interference of elastic wave reflected at the threaded parts of specimen and elastic bar, the length of transmit bar must be longer than that of incident bar. Strain gage in transmit bar must be located as close as possible from the interface of a transmit bar and specimen. In the developed tensile SHPB test system, A12011-T3 and A17075-T6 are tested to get the true stress-strain relation in the range of strain rate at $10^3/sec$
