  • The reseach was conducted to find out if there are any difference in growth, specific pattern in weed competition, and herbicide response of Korean lawngrass(Zoysia japonica Steud.) in a green house equipped with auto-foggy system. Plant height and leaf stage of Korean lowngrass under foggy condition were increased through all growing stages, whereas the number of tillers and shoot fresh weight harvested at 100 days after seeding were reduced by 24% and 29%, respectively, comparing with non-foggy condition. Weed emergence(total fresh weight) under foggy condition was much greater than that under non-foggy condition. Plant height, number of tillers, number of plant and shoot fresh weight of lawngrass under foggy condition were severely reduced with increasing the duration of competition(above 40 day-competition). Among the herbicides treated, oxyfluorfen completely inhibited plant height of lawngrass regardless of foggy condition, and bensulide considerably inhibited plant height of lawngrass under foggy condition. On the other hand, flazasulfuron did not affect the growth of lawngrass under both foggy and non-foggy conditions. At 40 days after herbicides application, weeding efficacy of bensulide and mecoprop under foggy condition were reduced by 6% and 13%, respectively, comparing with non-foggy condition.

  • There are differences in recommendations in the USA as to whether nitrogen fertilizer should be applied when establishing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L). The reason for not applying nitrogen is because some researchers found the addition of nitrogen reduced nodulation of alfalfa plants. A replicated experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions at the University of Nevada-Reno, Reno, Nevada, USA, to determine the effects of nitrogen application on seedling growth and nodulation of alfalfa when grown in a cool environment. A sterile sand was used in the growing media to which a complete nutrient solution minus nitrogen was applied volumetrically to each pot daily. Half of the pots received $NH_4NO_3$, at the rate of 11.2 kg/ha, at seeding and two and four weeks after planting, giving a total nitrogen application rate of 33.6 kg/ha. Rhizobia inoculant (R-12) consisted of a mixture of strains 171-15a. 1682c and 80 PI 265 of Rhizobium meliloti. Inoculant was applied to the seeds prior to planting and to the sand media at two and four weeks after seeding. Twenty seeds were planted in pots 14.0 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm deep. Seedlings were thinned after emergence to ten plants per pot. They were grown in a controlled environment chamber with a 16-hour light period. Soil temperatures at 6 cm depth ranged from $5.7^{\circ}C\;to\;21.5^{\circ}C$ and had a daily mean of $16.2^{\circ}C$ Plants were harvested at weekly intervals for seven weeks at which time root, shoot and total length, dry weight, volume and number of nodules per plant were determined. Root, shoot and total length were not affected by nitrogen fertilizer. However, application of nitrogen increased the size of the seedlings as determined by dry weight and volume when compared to plants which were not fertilized. This indicates that rhizobia did not fix enough atmospheric nitrogen to promote good growth. Nitrogen application resulted in significantly more nodules per plant. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer became more apparent as the plant became older. Results of this experiment show there are benefits from applying nitrogen at a low rate when establishing alfalfa under a cool environment.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic compost on the growth and root yield of Scutellaria baicalensis G. with organic cultivation from 2008 to 2009. Four organic compost were used ; Rice bran compost (RC : 1.1-3.6-1.4), Wheat bran compost (WC: 1.1-3.4-1.4), Hangawi compost (HC : 3.7-4.0-1.0), Cheonnyeonjigi compost (CC : 12.4-3.4-5.4) and Fermented chicken droppings compost (FC : 2.9-6.1-3.2). Organic matter, available phosphate and $K_2O$ of soil increased in all plots with the addition of organic compost, specifically in HC, CC and FC application. Treatment of HC, CC and FC application increased emergence rate and improved the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants compared to those of RC application. Subterranean part yields by different organic compost was high 149~156 kg per 10a as by growth increment of dried root yield. length of main root and diameter of main root. respectively, 17.4~18.4 cm, 12.65~12.94 mm from HC, CC and FC application. There were significantly positive correlation between the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants, dry root yield in Scutellaria baicalensis G. grown under organic compost application.

  • The effect of seeding depth on the growth, mesocotyl elongation and herbicidal response of rice(Oryza sativa L., Japonica type, cv. "Tongjin") and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var orizicola Ohwi.) were studied in greenhouse experiments. Barnyardgrass growth as affected by different water depths was briefly tested. Rice and barnyardgrass were broadcast in soil into Oem, 1cm, 2cm and 3cm in seeding depth under dry direct-seeded condition. Butachlor(N-(buthoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl) acetamide) at dose rate of 1800g ai/ha and thiobencarb(S-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl] diethyl carbamothioate) at dose rate of 2100g and 4200g ai/ha were soil applied to them at 5 days after seeding. At 10 days after seeding, plants harvested to examine their growth as affected by seeding depth. Root length and shoot fresh weight of rice untreated was greatest in 1cm- and 3cm-seeding depth, respectively, however, mesocotyl did not elongate. While plant height of barnyardgrass grew regardless of seeding depth and water depth, but root length was greatest in 1cm-seeding depth of dry condition and reduced with increased water depth. And mesocotyl was elongated in only dry condition and its length increased with increased seeding depth. At 10 days after application thiobencarb applied pre-emergence inhibited plant height, and shoot fresh weight of rice in only 0cm-seeding depth under dry condition whereas was unaffected in above 1cm-seeding depth, similar to untreated control, and ever increased root length and root fresh weight of rice. On the other hand, shoot, root and leaf growth of barnyardgrass was, severely inhibited regardless of application rates and seeding depths. Reduction of shoot growth by treatment of herbicide was significantly greater than that of root growth. Consequently, reduction of barnyardgrass growth by treatment of thiobencarb did not be associated with seeding depth and mesocotyl elongation as affected by different seeding depth.

  • The bird repellent, methiocarb 50% WP, has been used to reduce the bird damage in the crop field in the European countries. The bird damage occaisonally would occur in the wet direct seeded rice and in soybean field, and resulted in decreasing the crop productivity by the reduction of seedling emergence rate. In this experiment, rice seeds, Hwasungbyeo(Oryza sativa), were coated with the different application rate of methiocarb, 5, 10 and 15 per kg seed, and soybean, Taegwangkong(Glycine max), 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5g. In rice, the seeds coated with 10 and 15g of methiocarb were not lost by bird, while those with 5g and control were lost to 37 and 50% of total seeds, respectively. No damage by birds was observed in rice seedling when the coleoptile and radicle of rice were emerged at 7 days after the water seeding. The crop injury of methiocarb reducing the emergence rate of seedlings, shortening the shoot length, and decreasing the leaf number was occurred at the treated of methiocarb 15g per kg seed. In soybean, the loss of the sprouting by birds was lower in the treatment of methiocarb 7.5g per kg seed than that in both the control and the treatments of methiocarb, 2.5 and 5.0g per kg seed. No crop injury by the treatment of methiocarb was observed in all application rate.

  • To develop the third generation herbicidal cyclic imide (Cyl) derivatives, the new 1-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-propargyloxyphenyl)-3-thiourea derivatives were synthesized and measured their herbicidal activities ($pI_{50}$) in vivo (preemergence) against rice plant (Orysa Sativa) and barnyard grass (Echinochlor crus-galli). The synthetic yields (%) of aryl derivatives (21-40) in general was higher than that of alkyl derivatives (1-20). In case of alkyl derivatives, the synthetic yield depended on the structural forms of alkyl amine groups. From the results of correlation analysis between herbicidal activities and substituents, the compound 8 and 24 showed the highest herbicidal activity against the shoot and root of barnyard grass. Especially, the compounds 11 and 6 showed the selective herbicidal activities between rice plant and barnyard grass.

  • Effect of eight different treatments to stimulate germination and of seedling ageson the growth and tuber yields of Liriope platyphlla was carried out in vitro(room temperature)and in vivo(field). Treatments, in vitro, of sulfuric acid(2%), $GA_3$(100ppm), and stratification were most stimulated the germination of L.platyphylla. Among them the stratification was also the most effective for emergence in field and was shortened the days to germination in vitro and in vivo. Plant height and the number of leaves and tillers per plant in the sulfuric acid and the vinyl mulch treatments were the poorest, but those in other treatments were highered without any differences. Seeding of L.platyphylla was taken 66 days to emerge and the growth of that was more decreased than that of the seedlings. The younger seedling, the shorter the day of emergence of a new shoot. The olders were bloomed earlier and more increased the growth than the yongers and the divided seedlings, but the tuber yield was most increased in the 3 years seedling.

  • Seven barley varieties were tested under three different vernalization durations for observing the effects of vernalization duration and different growth habit on shoot apex development and heading date. The final leaf number per main stem in 3 and 6 weeks vernalized seedlings did not vary among varieties, but ranged 7 to 14 leaves in non-vernalized seedlings. The winter types had more leaves than the spring types. Days for each leaf emergence in non-vernalization were retarded 1. 3 to 1. 5 days in comparison with 3 or 6 weeks vernalized seedlings. In general, the leaf emergence speed of spring types was faster than that of winter types. The VI stage whose double ridge formed, did not vary in 6 weeks vernalization, but spring (Gangbori & Dongbori 2) and facultative or winter types showed two conspicuous difference patterns. The differences of days to X stage were great among different vernalization duration and varieties; the stage of spring types was reached faster than that of winter types. The early varieties within the same growth habit were reached to X stage faster, and the time of flag leaf emergence showed the similar tendency to the differentiation of X stage. The time of the first rapid stem internode elongation became late as for incompletely vernalized seedlings. The time within the same vernalization duration became later in winter types than in spring types, and even within the same growth habit, the time of early varieties became faster than that of late varieties. The growth habit in especially non-vernalized seedlings had highly significant correlation coefficients with the times of leaf development speed, leaf number per main stem, the first rapid stem internode and young spike elongations, X stage, and flag leaf emergence. However, the relationship between growth habit and time of heading in the field was not close.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influence of organic bed soil substrates on growth and yield of organically grown ginseng transplantation in a shaded plastic houses. The pH and EC of the substrates used for this study were 5.93-6.78 and 0.03-0.15 dS/m, respectively. The concentrations of NH4-N and $NO_3$-N were 14.01-68.63 mg/L, 5.60-58.83 mg/L respectively. and the average quantum in the shaded plastic houses was 11-15% of natural light. The maximum temperature in the shaded plastic houses is higher ($3-7^{\circ}C$) than that of outside open field from the last part of April to early in August. Emergence date of ginseng was on March 21 in the mongolian type shaded plastic house, and was on March 29 in normal type shaded plastic house. Both roots and shoot growth of ginseng were excellent in the bed soils with PPV-2, compared with other compounds used. We concluded that the PPV-2 could be promising a good bed soil substrate for organic ginseng cultivation in shaded plastic house.

  • Effect of soil moisture on growth of 2 year old Pan ax ginseng was investigated by pot culture using clay loam and sandy loam soils. In clay loam soil emergence rate of new shoot and stem growth were greatly decreased below 40% of field capacity. In sandy loam soil the growth of stem and leaf were greatly affected below 40% moisture. Root yield showed maximum at 60% moisture and significantly coorelated with stem diameter and root length. Rotten root rate and die back rate of top were least at 60% and gradually increased with either increase or decrease of soil moisture.
