The purpose of this study was to examine associations between subjective symptoms of musculoskeletal diseases and the degree of job stress among shipyard workers. The study population was 7,078 employees of the D shipbuilding company. Survey data was obtained from 1,727 employees using a proportional sample according to age and a self-administered questionnaire. The associations were examined with ${\chi}^2$ and logistic regression. The main results were as follows: First, the prevalence of musculoskeletal disease in any one part is 59.5% by NIOSH standard. Second, subjects who had worked in the shipyard for over five years had a prevalence of musculoskeletal disease 1.8 times higher than subjects who had worked in the shipyard for less than five years (p<.01). Finally, those who had less support from co-worker's had a prevalence of musculoskeletal disease 1.3 times higher than subjects who had more support from co-worker's (p<.05). Throughout the results, shipyard workers had higher occurrences of musculoskeletal diseases than other manufacturing workers and the risk of musculoskeletal disorder tended to increase with higher job stress. In this research, the plan to reduce musculoskeletal diseases involved making a program and policy which would be able to lower job stress socio-psychologically. This research will prove useful by using basic preventive materials to improve the musculoskeletal health of labores who work in shipyards and similar places.

In this paper, we propose a method to implement an IoT-based sensor network for each workplace of a shipyard. Here, at the most common welding workplace in shipyards, the shipbuilding blocks are used as a communication medium to transmit information such as the worker's location, welding progress, and working hour to a server using LoRa and powerline communication. To achieve the data communication, inductive couplers and hybrid modems have been manufactured and installed on wire feeders and pin jigs to establish a sensor network. As a result of field test, the proposed system shows a success rate of data transmission and a rate of successful recognition of worker's location of about 98% or more. In addition, the process management system platform can record and display the work process data generated at the field in real time. The proposed system can be a starting point for enhancing the competitiveness of Korean shipbuilding industry through the establishment of a smart shipyard.

Estimating the locations of workers in a shipyard is beneficial for a variety of applications such as selecting potential forwarders for transferring data in IoT services and quickly rescuing workers in the event of industrial disasters or accidents. In this work, we propose a human movement stream processing system for estimating worker locations in shipyards based on Apache Spark and TensorFlow serving. First, we use Apache Spark to process location data streams. Then, we design a worker location prediction model to estimate the locations of workers. TensorFlow serving manages and executes the worker location prediction model. When there are requirements from clients, Apache Spark extracts input data from the processed data for the prediction model and then sends it to TensorFlow serving for estimating workers' locations. The worker movement data is needed to evaluate the proposed system but there are no available worker movement traces in shipyards. Therefore, we also develop a mobility model for generating the workers' movements in shipyards. Based on synthetic data, the proposed system is evaluated. It obtains a high performance and could be used for a variety of tasksin shipyards.

This paper implements many-to-many communication between users and develops a multi-functional smart helmet for worker protection and environmental safety in the shipbuilding and shipping industry. First, the communication situation is recorded in the field to perform signal processing for noise that interferes with communication. Then, it deals with the contents of developing smart helmets, data acquisition, algorithms, and simulations. The simulation results analyzed by applying the adaptive algorithm are shown, and their usefulness is confirmed. In conclusion, looking at the optimization process for the convergence factor of the Least Mean Square and Filtered-x Least Mean Square Adaptation Algorithm was possible. It is thought that it has laid the foundation for implementing many-to-many communication, the function of smart helmets that reduces or removes various noises at the shipyard in the future.
Objective: The Work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs) have been a problem on industrial occupational safety and health in Korean shipyard industry. It has been a big social problem. Background: As a result, Korean government enacted a law to prevent musculoskeletal disorders at work and some major companies have already implemented an ergonomics program. Method: This paper presents a study on the effect of an ergonomics program in a Korean shipbuilding company during the last ten years. Conclusion: The Incidence of WMSDs, the worker's compensation cost and the lost time were decreased after implementation of the ergonomics program. Application: The results of the publishing will help efficient operation of MSDs prevention activity in other companies.

This paper discusses the modeling and implementation of a worker location system at a shipbuilding site. The importance of worker location in an industrial environment is highlighted as a critical element in the prevention of industrial accidents. The paper presents a worker tracking system that integrates power line and beacon communication to accurately track worker position. Through experiments, the paper demonstrates how to monitor the changes in worker location based on different scenarios and how to access the status of worker location using the manager's web service. The paper can be used for the design of a system that will provide real-time location information to safety managers for the improvement of worker safety management.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to clarify the association between serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and type of work in the shipbuilding industry. Methods: 1,072 final study subjects were admitted to a general hospital from April through July 2010 for the purpose of medical examination. Data on general characteristics such as age, smoking history, alcohol history and exercise habits was gathered through structured self-administered questionnaires. Information on job factors was collected from a medical examination, by interview and through company personnel data. Serum CEA levels were measured after eight hours' fasting and were analyzed by a radioimmunoassay. Results: On univariate analysis, the mean serum CEA level was significantly higher among married (p=0.02), older age (p<0.01), longer work time (p<0.01), smokers (p<0.01), lower education (p<0.01), and indirect and direct exposure groups (p<0.01). On multiple regression analysis, serum CEA level was influenced by smoking (p=0.001), duration of work (p=0.019), and direct exposure group (p<0.001). However, among the direct exposure group, serum CEA level was not significantly different between welding, mounting, electro-device constructive work, grinding and cleaning, and painting. Conclusions: The goal of this research was to determine if there were differences between serum CEA levels according to occupational role among shipyard workers. The direct exposure group of shipyard workers had a relatively higher level of serum CEA than did the indirect exposure group and office workers, most likely due to occupational exposure.

It is very important to manage the position of the blocks in the shipyard where the work is completed, or the blocks need to be moved for the next process operation. The moving distance of the block increases according to the position of the block stockyard. As the travel distance increases, the number of trips and travel distance of the transporter increases, which causes a great deal of operation cost. Currently, the selection of the block position in the shipyard is based on the know-how of picking up a transporter worker by the production schedule of the block, and the location where the block is to be placed is determined according to the situation in the stockyard. The know-how to select the position of the block is the result of optimizing the position of the block in the shipyard for a long time. In this study, we used the accumulated data as a result of the operation of the yard in the shipyard and tried to select the location of blocks by learning it. Decision tree learning algorithm was used for learning, and a prototype was developed using it. Finally, we prove the possibility of selecting a block stockyard through this algorithm.

This study aims to compare a self-reported and expert-observed method on ergonomic risk factors of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). The checklist was developed based on the results of previous studies, and the symptoms of WMSDs were obtained using a self-reported questionnaire from 1,029 shipyard workers. The risk factors were assessed through the self-report by workers and video analysis by ergonomists. The symptom prevalence at the low back (59.2%), shoulders (50.8 %), and knees (49.7%) were relatively higher than those at other body parts. Odds ratios (ORs) by body parts were 2.48 to 2.90 for the risk job, and the ORs were significantly different from those of the low risk job. The risk factor scores by body parts between workers and ergonomist were very high correlation(r=0.82 to 0.92). The rates of self-report from risk job were 54.0% (elbow and arm) to 72.1 % (low back), but sometimes overestimated(105.7 to 122.6%) than those by ergonomists. The checklist, developed in this study, will be an efficient tool for the evaluation of risk jobs using self-report by workers.
