  • Korea is the best country for ship-building. But nowadays, the speedboat and yacht are not mostly developed yet. For the sleek lines of ship, more innovative transmission system should be obtained in the ship industry. In general, marine transmissions often use the straight shafts and the helical gears. So it makes problem that engine-room requires large space. In this case, conical gear is the best solution for this. Until now, technology of conical gear is not generalized, but it will be increased more through many applications. So, in order to get conical gear design technology by ourselves, this thesis is conducted. This paper was written to gain useful information of marine gearbox design applied conical gear through the measurement of backlash, computer analysis and tooth contact test of helical conical involute gear pairs.

  • As a global effort for eco-friendly, the ship building is making great efforts to develop ships using low-carbon, eco-friendly alternative fuels. Nuclear energy, one of several eco-friendly alternative energy sources, is evaluated as an effective alternative for future ships by minimizing carbon emissions and securing economic feasibility with low power generation cost. However, although appropriate regulatory requirements are necessary for commercialization of nuclear powered ships, there are currently no regulatory requirements for nuclear powered ships in Korea. In this study, accordingly, domestic and international regulatory requirements related to nuclear powered ships were reviewed, matters to be considered in terms of safety when developing domestic marine nuclear reactor regulatory requirements were derived, and a licensing regulatory system for nuclear powered ships was derived. This study is expected to be used as basic reference data when developing regulatory requirements for nuclear powered ships.

  • The forging industry is composed of those plants that make parts to order for customers; or make parts for their own company's internal use; or make standard parts for resale. Also, the forging industry is closely related with automobile industry and ship building industry - Korea's major export industry. But, it is hard to find the Korea's forging industry's statistical analysis because it is not revealed with final product. In this paper, we perform statistical analysis using the micro data service provided by the Statistics Korea. We focus on the analysis of production costs as well as the status of forging company and their employee.

  • Recently, the attention to large container ships whose size is greater than 10,000 TEU container ship has been increased due to their increasing demand. The large container ship has twin skegs because of the engine capacity and large beam-draft ratio. In this paper, the maneuvering characteristics of a container ship with twin skegs were investigated through 4DOF(four degree of freedom) HPMM(Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism) test and computer simulation. A mathematical model for maneuvering motion with 4DOF of twin skegs system was established to include effects of roll motion on the maneuvering motion. And to obtain roll-coupling hydrodynamic coefficients of a container ship, 4DOF HPMM system of MOERI which has a roll moment measurement system was used. HPMM tests were carried out for a 12,000 TEU class container ship with twin skegs at scantling load condition. Using the hydrodynamic coefficients obtained, simulations were made to predict the maneuvering motion. Rudder forces of twin-rudders were measured at the angles of drift and rudder. The neutral rudder angles with drift angles of ship was quite different with those of single skeg ship. So other treatment of flow straightening coefficient $\gamma_R$ was used and the simulation results was compared with general simulation result. The treatment of experimental result at static drift and rudder test was very important to predict the maneuverability of a container ship with twin skegs.

  • Scientific and technological progress is also fundamental to the evolving merchant shipping industry, both in terms of the size and speed of modern ships and in the level of their technical capabilities. While the freight performance of ships is growing, the number of crew on board is steadily decreasing, as more work processes are being automated through the implementation of information technologies, including ship management systems. Although there have been repeated appeals from international maritime organizations to focus on building effective maritime security defenses against cyber attacks, the problems have remained unresolved. Owners of shipping companies do not disclose information about cyberattack attempts or incidents against them due to fear of commercial losses or consequences, such as loss of image, customer and insurance claims, and investigations by independent international organizations and government agencies. Issues of cybersecurity of control systems in the world today have gained importance, due to the fact that existing threats concern not only the security of technical means and devices, but also issues of environmental safety and safety of life at sea. The article examines the implementation of cyber risk management in the shipping industry, providing recommendations for the safe ship operation and its systems in order to improve vulnerability to external threats related to cyberattacks, and to ensure the safety and security of such a technical object as a seagoing ship.

  • Contemporary lectures in undergraduate engineering courses typically focus on teaching major technical knowledge-based theories in a limited time. Therefore, most lectures do not allow the students to gain understanding of how the theories are applied, especially in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering departments. Shipyards require students to acquire practical ship design skills in undergraduate courses. To meet this requirement, two lectures are organized by the authors; namely, "Planning Procedure of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering" (PNAOE) and "Innovative Ship Design" (ISD). The concept of project-based and collaborative learning is applied in these two lectures. In the PNAOE lecture, sophomores receive instruction in the designing and building of model ships, and the students' work is evaluated in a model ship contest. This curriculum enables students to understand the concepts of ship design and production. In the ISD lecture, seniors learn how to develop their creative ideas about ship design and communicate with members of group. They are encouraged to cooperate with others and understand the ship design process. In the capstone design course, students receive guidance to facilitate understanding of how the knowledge from their sophomore or junior classes, such as fluid mechanics, statics, and dynamics, can be applied to practical ship design. Students are also encouraged to compete in the ship design contest organized by the Society of Naval Architects of Korea. Moreover, the effectiveness of project-based and collaborative learning for enhancing interest in the shipbuilding Industry and understanding the ship design process is demonstrated by citing the PNAOE and ISD lectures as examples.
