The maritime sector is advancing with dedicated endeavor to reduce greenhouse gas in addressing issues with regards to global warming. Since 01 January 2013, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation mandatory requirement for Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has been in place and should be satisfied by newly-built ships of more than 400 gross tonnage and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships type. Therefore, compliance to this necessitates planning during the design stage whereas verification can be carried-out through an acceptable method during sea trial. The MEPC-approved 2013 guidance, ISO 15016 and ISO 19019 on EEDI serves the purpose for calculation and verification of attained EEDI value. Individual ships EEDI value should be lower than the required value set by these regulations. The key factors for EEDI verification are power and speed assessment and their synchronization. The shaft power can be measured by telemeter system using strain gage during sea trial. However, calibration of shaft power onboard condition is complicated. Hence, it relies only on proficient technology that operates within the permitted ISO allowance. On the other hand, the ship speed can be measured and calibrated by differential ground positioning system (DGPS). An actual test on a newly-built vessel was carried out to assess the correlation of power and speed. The Energy-efficiency Design Index or Operational Indicator Monitoring System (EDiMS) software developed by the Dynamics Laboratory-Mokpo Maritime University (DL-MMU) and Green Marine Equipment RIS Center (GMERC) of Mokpo Maritime University was utilized for this investigation. In addition, the software can continuously monitor air emission and is a useful tool for inventory and ship energy management plan. This paper introduces the synchronization and identification method between shaft power and ship speed for EEDI verification in accordance with the ISO guidance.

In the actual sea, the additional resistance due to external force such as wind, current and wave is accompanied, and the required power is added in response to these resistance. Especially when the ship is sailing at low speed, the effects of wind and current have a great impact on the safe control of the ship. Likewise, it is thought that the effects of wind and current have a great impact on the trawl ship control since the towing speed of a bottom trawl ship is a low speed of 3 to 4 knots. If the reduce of ship speed and the increase of engine power due to the influence of wind and current can be identified, the safe towing power can be calculated based on a given engine output. Thus, the appropriate size of a fishing gear can be determined. In this study, a total of 20 trawl operations were conducted for seasonal maritime research in the same research area according to the operation mode of propeller. Based on navigation data, trawl fishing data, and engine performance data acquired during the towing fishing gear, and data of ship speed, hull resistance, fishing gear resistance, wind force and current force according to an incidence angle were estimated. The overall power for these loads was calculated and compared with the measured engine power, and the effects of wind force and current force on the engine power were investigated.

In ship operation, the roll motions can seriously degrade the performance of mechanical and personnel effectiveness. So many studies for the roll stabilization system design have been performed and good results have been achieved. In many studies, the stabilizing fins are used. Recently rudders, which have been extensively modified, have been used exclusively to stabilize the roll. But, in the roll stabilization control system, the control performance is very sensitive to the ship speed. So, we can see that it is important to consider the ship speed in the rudder roll control system design. The gain-scheduling control technique is very useful in the control problem incorporating time varying parameters which can be measured in real time. Based on this fact, in this paper we examine the;$H_{\infty}$-Gain Scheduling control design technique. Therefore, we assume that a parameter, the ship speed which can be estimated in real time, is varying and apply the gain-scheduling control technique to design the course keeping and anti-rolling control system far a ship. In this control system, the controller dynamics is adjusted in real-time according to time-varying plant parameters. The simulation result shows that the proposed control strategy is shown to be useful for cases when the ship speed is varying and robust to disturbances like wind and wave.

Recently, to improve the safety and maneuverability at fairway around harbor the POD system has been equipped on a ship. And the interest about maneuvering characteristics of a cruise ship has been increasing. In this paper the mathematical model of maneuvering motion of a cruise ship with twin POD system in general speed and slow speed are presented. And the maneuvering coefficients of mathematical model are obtained from the captive model tests using CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage). Computer simulation using mathematical model in general speed and slow speed are carried out and compared with the results of free running model test with the same model ship. The differences between the mathematical models are compared and discussed. In this paper the mathematical models, the results of captive model test and simulation results are presented.

The purpose of this paper is to establish the basic procedure and method for selection of preferred anti-fouling paint considering economic analysis according to ship's speed loss based on ISO 19030 that has been published in 2016 to prescribe practical methods for measuring changes in ship specific hull and propeller performance. In this study, six (6) anti-fouling paint products have been assumed for alternatives with each target maximum average speed loss and carried out comparison of the alternatives and sensitivity analysis in assumed conditions for selection of the preferred alternative.
Recently, there is a tendency to design the large full ships with lower-powered engine as the means for energy saving in ship's navigation at seas. Such a lower-powered ship is anticipated to show the different propulsive performance in rough seas, because the fluctuation of main engine load of lower powered ship is relatively large as compared with higher-powered ship is relatively large as compared with higher-powered ship. The fluctuation of propeller load is nonlinear at racing condition in waves. It is due to the variation of inflow velocity into propeller, the propeller immersion and the characteristics of engine governor. In this paper, the theoretical calculation of the nominal speed loss and the numerical simulation for the nonlinear load fluctuation of a model ship in rough seas are carried out. From the results of calculation, the following are discussed. (1) The ratio of nominal speed loss to the speed in still water. (2) The manoeuvring ability of ship and the operational ability of main engine in a seaway. (3) A method of the evaluation for the fluctuation of propeller torque and revolution on the engine characteristics plane. (4) The effect of engine governor characteristics on the propeller load fluctuation.
The detection of ship wakes image can demonstrate substantial information regarding on a ship, such as its tonnage, type, direction, and speed of movement. Consequently, the wake target recognition is a favorable way for ship identification. This paper proposes a Local Binary Pattern (LBP) approach to extract image features (wakes) for training an Improved Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (IBPANN) to identify ship speed. This method is applied to sort and recognize the ship wakes of five different speeds images, the result shows that the detection accuracy is satisfied as expected, the average correctness rates of wakes target recognition at the five speeds may be achieved over 80%. Specifically, the lower ship's speed, the better accurate rate, sometimes it's accuracy could be close to 100%. In addition, one significant feature of this method is that it can receive a higher recognition rate than the nearest neighbor classification method.

In order to estimate the effective horse power(EHP) in towing net of a bottom trawl ship, the ship's resistance was calculated by using a series data of Yamagata and Wigley formula. Also the effective horse power for a ship(EHPs) was estimated versus the ship speed in sailing and the propulsive efficiency was calculated with the brake horse power and the effective horse power. Then the effective horse power for a ship and a trawl net were estimated in the application of the propulsive efficiency in towing net. The total effective horse power($EHP_T$) was average 187.6kW and the effective horse power for a 1.awl net($EHP_n$) was average 176.7kW at a smooth sea state in towing net. The ratio of $EHP_n$ to $EHP_T$ was about 94.0% and the value was higher slightly than was already informed at a smooth sea state. The power for keeping up a townet speed was required more about 20% of a maximum continuous power at a rather rough sea state than a smooth sea state. In the future, if the residual resistance is considered with a sea state, $EHP_n$ will be estimated more correctly Also the data of EHP estimated by this method will be used as the basic data to design a trawl net.

This study presents the analysis of relationship between ship speed and local ice load on the Korean Icebreaker ARAON. The relationship curves were made from the data obtained at two areas: the Arctic and the Antarctic; and for two operation condition: the icebreaking condition in sea ice trial and general operation in ice covered sea. The strain data were converted to the equivalent stress value, and the influence of ship speed on the local ice load was analyzed and compared each other. These analysis results are useful in working on a statistically valid hull design approach.
Every ship might be exposed to collision, grounding and/or various accidents. They may make some underwater holes on the hull. An underwater damage would cause her loss of buoyancy, trim, and inclination. Although a ship has some provisions against these accidents, if the circumstance is serious, she would be sunk or upsetted. Because of varieties of type of accidents, one could not prepare all of them. Many subdivision could prevent them, but it is difficult to realize it due to rising costs. This paper deals with physical phenomena of sinkage and an application on box type ship, and some results are earned as follows; 1. sinkage speed up to the level of the damage hole is increased proportionally, and is decreased proportionally after filling the level. 2. the curve of draft shows cup type of second order polynomial up to the damage hole level, and shows cap type of second order polynomial after filling the level. 3. if damage occurs beneath half of the draft, changes of head and displacement, and sinking speed follow almost straight lines. 4. by careful observation, sinkage speed could be predicted.
