Naval Ships have a number of requirements related to performance. Naval ship acquisition takes a long time from initial planning to delivery, and various products such as drawings and reports are created. In complex systems, such as naval ships, it is difficult to maintain the required traceability through these outputs. The basic design of the ship is an important step to determine the specifications, performance, and equipment of the ship. It is necessary to apply the systematic requirements management process. The basic design manages the requirements in accordance with the systems engineering-based technical review process, but the actual system architecture design process is not presented. The traceability between the requirements and the functional and physical architectures of components is unclear. This paper examined how to design the system architecture required for specification and system design, and the design results were verified using SE-based technical review process for requirements management. A step-by-step process for designing a submarine system architecture is presented and verified using the SE technical review. This facilitates the specification of the requirements and system architecture design, and supports traceability management and verification of the requirements. The proposed process can be applied in various ships including submarines.

Recently, the matrix method has become almost universal tool to solve various engineering problems in conjunction with the rapid development of high speed electronic computers. The method also has been introduced to ship structure analysis in past few years. This paper treats a method to obtain an approximate solution for stress distribution in a web frame of oil tankers. The method is designed to use relatively small computer. The procedure consists of two steps. In the first step, the web frame is idealized to a plane frame of slender members as shown in Fig. 2. Then, the plane frame is analyzed with a matrix method to determine forces and moments in each members. In the second step, the original shape of the web frame is restored and any portion of the frame, in which the stress distribution is desired, is isolated as shown in Fig. 3. Then, again, a finite element method is used to determine the stress distribution in the isolated portion. In this work, IBM 1130 computer in the computation center, SUN has been used. A numerical example with scantlings of an actual ship is worked out to prove the validity of this method.

It should be primarily aimed to increase survivability consisting of susceptibility, vulnerability and recoverability of naval vessels including ship hull, armament system as well as crews from the design stage to practical operations. With this in mind, swift and efficient actions should be executed on the basis of accurate calculations for the recoverability of damaged vessels. In this paper, it is established how the damage control system of naval vessels is embodied through step-by-step processes intending to cope with various damaged situations that may possibly occur during real operations. It is validated that this system has the applicability to naval vessels through the case study of the battle ship which has been damaged during the operation.
Incheon Port has been served as not only the center of the Yellow Sea and port for trade with China but also domestic gateway port for the metropolitan area, playing a professional role as the greatest domestic Port which processes a variety of items such as imported raw materials, bulk cargo, oil and gas and so on. This study was conducted based on step by step business process between port entry and departure of ship, and incurred cost according to port industry classification and performance on the port facility. Bulk cargo and general cargo such as grain, food, steel, scrap metal, wood, coal, LNG, LPG and oil etc., which have a vast majority of import goods, have been treated by 57,062 thousand tons and 7,409 thousand tons of container cargo were processed at Incheon Port in 2009. Bulk vessels and carriers moving items such as LPG, LNG and oil recorded 38,836 thousand won and full-container vessels recorded 11,001 thousand won as the amount of notified port facility usage fees in 2008.

The exchange of goods over the sea is a situation in which the amount of trade between countries is gradually increasing. In order to maintain the optimal operating condition, the ship maintains stability and optimal operating conditions by inserting or withdrawing ballast water from the ballast tank according to the loading condition of cargo capacity is also increasing. Control valves play an important role in controlling fluid flow in these pipes. When the flow rate is controlled using a control valve, problems such as cavitation, flashing, and suffocating flow may occur due to high differential pressure, and in particular, damage to valves and pipes due to cavitation is a major problem. Therefore, in this study, the cavitation phenomenon is reduced by installing orifices at the front and rear ends of the high differential pressure control butterfly valve to reduce the sudden pressure drop at the limiting part of the butterfly valve step by step. The flow coefficient according to the shape of the orifice, the degree of cavitation occurrence, and the correlation were analyzed using a CFD(Cumputational Fluid Dynamics), and an optimal orifice design for reducing cavitation is derived.

The objective of this research is to select the most effective technique among task related techniques(motion & time study, job redesign, physical environment improvement) for improving work efficiency in shipbuilding enterprise. This study consists of several principal steps. The first step is to design critical criteria in evaluating work efficiency in ship-building enterprises. The second step is to develop sub-criteria of the critical criteria. The third step is to develop a four level AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) structure using the critical criteria, sub-criteria and techniques among task related techniques. The fourth step is to develop the pairwise comparison matrix at each level of AHP structure, which was based on survey data collected at the H heavy industry. And the last step is to select the most effective technique among task related techniques using AHP analysis. The result of AHP analysis has shown clear difference in priority among task related techniques in terms of work efficiency of the shipbuilding enterprise: The reduction of normal time is more important than the reduction of allowance time in improving of the work efficiency. Motion & time study is the most important technique for the reduction of normal time, and physical environment improvement is the most important technique for the reduction of allowance time as well.

Hull design data is currently prepared by a 2D CAD system and re-input to 3D CAD systems specialized for detail design or to a structural analysis system. In this paper, sharing design data among different CAD systems has been studied. Based on STEP methodology, a neutral model is generated from 2D AutoCAD drawings. To handle a geometric data of this model, the non-manifold model of ACIS is used because it can support various CAD data representation such as 2D graphic entities, 3D wireframe, 3D surface model, and solid B-Rep/CSG model. It is observed that a mon-manifold model can easily be transformed to a 3-D wireframe model for the hull detail design system AutoDef or a FE model for the structural analysis system Nastran.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) is planning to include the Alternative Assessment of the Weather Criterion in the new Intact Stability (IS) Code to be revised. In this study, the procedure of the model test in the Interim Guidelines was reviewed by carrying out the model test and analyzing the test results. For this purpose, RO/RO passenger ship whose ratios of breadth to draft and the height of weight to draft were above 3.5 and above 0.6 respectively was selected as a test ship. Drifting test and motion test in regular waves were performed to estimate the hydrodynamic heeling lever and roll-back angle. Motion tests in waves were carried out in the three wave steepness conditions to measure roll-back angle and examine the feasibility of so called, the Three-step method. Using the test data, satisfaction of the Weather Criterion was assessed for the test ship by using the alternative method and compared with the current method.

Due to the rapid growth of ship building industry and the increment of ship construction in Korea, several hundred thousand of lifting lugs per year, have been installed at the lifting positions of ship block and removed after finishing their function, therefore. appropriate design system for the strength check or the optimal design of each lug structure has been required in order to increase the capability of efficient design. In this study, the design system of D-type lifting lug structure which is most popular and useful in shipyards, was developed for the purpose of initial design of lug structure. Developed system layout and graphic user interface for this design system based on the $C^{++}$ language were explained step by step. Through the illustration of one example of D-type lug designs, the efficiency of this design system was proved. Therefore, more efficient performance of practical lug structural design will be expected on the windows of personal computer using this design system.
Ennin was a Japanese buddhist monk who stayed in Tang from Jun. 13, 838 A.D. to Dec. 14, 847 A.D. in lunar's calender and wrote lengthy diary through the travel. This diary contained lots of information on the politics, economy, social culture, religion, diplomatic policies, militaries, geography, transportations and administrations of Tang China. Especially the beginning of his diary dated from Jun. 13, to July 3, 838 A. D. was recorded in the manner of ship's logbook entries. Many terms of navigation and naval architecture appeared on it. It is very important to understand them for studying ancient ship and its navigation skill. This paper aims to investigate the meaning of ‘Nu-A’ obviously referring to some part of hull of the ship as the first step to annotate the terms of navigation and naval architecture which were appeared in the diary.
