  • Contact and frictional locking conditions and the effect of shielding due to contact at the facet, which could be represented by the difference in energy release rate, as a function of phase angle of loading are analyzed in this study for the case of interfacial cracks by assuming single crack-kink model. The analysis of contact effects on interfacial fracture resistance shows that relative shielding increases as the shear component was increased, which indicates a qualitative agreement with the previous experimental results.

  • The system for producing magnetic field constitutes an important component of magnetic refrigerator. Many researchers have directed significant effort to increase the magnetic field intensity, because the magnetocaloric effect at the Curie temperature increases with the power of 2/3 of the magnetic field. In this study, we report the simulation of the magnetic field intensity at polar axis of a Halbach cylinder (HC) by i) changing the length and thickness of the HC, ii) having with or without gap of the HC, and iii) surrounding the HC with a soft magnet shell, acting as a shielding. We simulated the field distribution of a HC with a finite size. Furthermore, the detailed numerical results of the magnetic field distribution and its dependence on shielding are presented in this study.

  • Even if transmissions through normal channel between ubiquitous devices and terminal readers are encrypted, any extra sources of information retrieved from encrypting module can be exploited to figure out the key parameters, so called side channel attack. Since side channel attacks are based on statistical methods, making side channel signal weak or complex is the proper solution to prevent the attack. Among many countermeasures, shielding the electromagnetic signal and adding noise to the EM signal were examined by applying different thicknesses of thin films of ferroelectric (BTO) and conductors (copper and gold). As a test vehicle, chip antenna was utilized to see the change in radiation characteristics: return loss and gain. As a result, the ferroelectric BTO showed no recognizable effect on both shielding and adding noise. Cu thin film showed increasing shielding effect with thickness. Nanometer Au exhibited possibility in adding noise by widening of bandwidth and red shifting of resonating frequencies.

  • Development of lightweight implant plates are important to reduce the stress shielding effect for a prosthesis of femur bone fractures. Stainless steel (SS-316L) is a widely used material for making implants. Stress shielding effect and other issues arise due to the difference in mechanical properties of stainless steel when compared with bone. To overcome these issues, composite materials seem to be a better alternative solution. The comparison is made between two biocompatible composite materials, namely Ti-hydroxyapatite and Ti-polypropylene. "Titanium (Ti)" is fiber material while "hydroxyapatite" and "polypropylene" are matrix materials. These two composites have Young's modulus closer to the bone than stainless steel. Besides the variety of bones, present paper constrained to femur bone analysis only. Being heaviest and longest, the femur is the most likely to fail among all bone failures in human. Modelling of the femur bone, screws, implant and assembly was carried out using CATIA and static analysis was carried out using ANSYS. The femur bone assembly was analyzed for forces during daily activities. Ti-hydroxyapatite and Ti-polypropylene composite implants induced more stress in composite implant plate, results less stress induced in bone leading to a reduction in shielding effect than stainless steel implant plate thus ensuring safety and quick healing for the patient.

  • All electric and electronic appliances require their own electromagnetic compatibility. So an industrially advanced nations have made many standards for regulation for their profits thus the researches on the electro-magnetic shielding effect(SE) are being increased. But the SE can not proved its effect by a theory alone because of complex-material problems. This study Present the correlation of the SE and immunity of radiated radio frequency of the electromagnetic field. We have analyzed the theory of shielding effect to the shield texture. It has been proved that experimental results showed this effects have intensive relations to the electromagnetic field immunity.

  • The characteristics of the fume generation in a flux cored arc welding were investigated using the fume collection chamber developed. The Korean Standard concerning the method for the evaluation of the fume generation rate(FGR) was updated by the evaluation method obtained through this study. It was found that the effect of humidity in the test environment should be considered and the automatic welding method had to be employed for the purpose of the exact evaluation of the fume generation rate. The results showed that the fume generation rate was influenced by the welding parameters. The important factors were the welding current arc voltage, travel speed, and contact tip to work distance(CTWD) that affected the heat input as well as the torch angle and the shielding gas flow rate that influenced the shielding effect. The fume generation rate increased as the heat input increased and the shielding effect decreased. It was also observed that the effect of the welding current is much grater than the other welding parameters.

  • To cope with the rising cost of the fossil fuel and the need of renewable energy, many wind farms are being constructed along the coasts of Korean peninsula. However, construction of these wind farms may cause negative influences by the shielding effect and the Doppler frequency from the wind turbine on the military radars operated in the nearby region. Therefore, the analysis of electromagnetic phenomenon with the real wind turbine is required. This paper compare the measured electromagnetic shielding effect and Doppler effect with theoretical shielding effect according to obstacle in literature and the extracted Doppler frequency through signal modeling.

  • The CT can accurately present the anatomical structure of an organ in the human body, and the resolution of the image is excellent. On Brain CT examination, the radiation sensitivity of the orbit is high and it is subject to many exposure effects. To reduce exposure dose of lens, this study compares change of exposure dose and shielding rate about non-shielding and shielding in a way of using two shielding materials, bismuth and tungsten. In this study, we used bismuth and tungsten filament as shielding materials made by 3D printing to measure the exposure dose according to the materials thickness and each of slices. To compare each shielding rate, 1 mm to 5 mm of two materials was measured with the head phantom fixed and the Magicmax universal dosimeter placed on the eye when the shielding material is not placed, and the shielding material is placed on it. In the 1 mm thick filament, the bismuth filament showed 26.8% and the tungsten filament showed 43.1% shielding rate. Therefore, tungsten presents much greater shielding effect than bismuth.

  • This paper describes a detailed investigational performance on the gamma radiation shield effect of heavy concretes that were manufactured by the use of mineral ores produced domestically and which may be possibly applied for the biological shield design. Ten different kinds of mineral ores were collected for use as the aggregates, physical test and chemical analysis for them were carried out to select the aggregate with a better property. Through the experimental investigation on the shielding effect of various concretes with different combination of concrete components such as water-cement and fine-coarse aggregate ratios, it was possible to derive some criteria for the best condition being capable of obtaining the concretes with high density and good uniformity. Data on the shielding-effectiveness of the different concretes were obtained by performing collimated beam experiment using 60Co gamma-ray. Analyzing the shielding-efficiency, shielding-concrete specific gravity and biological shield cost, the optimum condition of yielding the best economic shielding design, with low cost and good spatial distribution to some extent was determined.
