  • Since the era of industrial revolution, the waste volume has continued to grow; waste management has thus become one of the major global environmental challenges facing humanities today. Waste treatment and management issues trigger NIMBY movements, and disputes among states, governments, and social actors over the issues have been accelrating. At the level of states and sub-states, various measures including institutions, laws, regulations, market-oriented methods, consensus and collaborative governance have been introduced to address various problems associated with waste. More recently, science and technology has been applied to the waste treatment and management under the notion of circular economy. However, societal support for addressing waste problems still remains inadequate, calling for new approaches and alternative pathways. In this context, this study examines two cases of urban incineration plants designed by Hudertwasser, Austria-born artist and architect: Spittelau, Austria, and Osaka, Japan. Through these case studies, I demonstrate how creative and innovative culture-technology convergence can shed new light on challenging environmental issues such as an urban waste problem.

  • This study aims to analyze the characteristics of 'Korean Chic' through the collections of Korean designer Eudon Choi, who has gained prominence in the international fashion market. The term 'Korean Chic' encompasses four main traits: coexistence, eclecticism, practicality, and uniqueness. First, coexistence involves blending masculine and feminine elements as well as traditional and modern aspects. This is evident in Choi's use of strong, angular designs typically seen in menswear alongside soft silhouettes and feminine touches found in womenswear. Additionally, traditional Korean hanbok elements are harmoniously integrated with modern design techniques. Second, eclecticism is seen in the balanced mix of direct and subtle expressions, including the fusion of hanbok details with diverse fashion elements, and the combination of monochromatic and vivid colors. This trait also involves blending strong and delicate features to create a dynamic and versatile look. Third, practicality is a cornerstone of Choi's design philosophy. He emphasizes the importance of creating wearable yet innovative pieces that are suitable for daily wear. His collections feature practical materials and items that prioritize comfort without compromising creativity. Last, unique is highlighted through hidden details and unexpected design elements. Choi often incorporates surprising prints or decorations that are not immediately visible, adding an element of discovery and delight for the wearer. This can include witty combinations of traditional and contemporary elements, as well as formal and casual styles. Through study aims to shed light on the design identity of Korean fashion designers by examining the characteristics of Korean Chic in Eudon Choi's work. It also calls for further research on other Korean designers to enhance the understanding and global recognition of Korean fashion's unique aesthetic and growing influence in the international fashion scene.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the online agricultural and food products market has experienced substantial expansion. This study aims to examine the factors influencing consumers' online purchasing behavior, their satisfaction levels regarding price and quality, the frequency of online transactions, and their future purchasing intentions concerning key short-term non-timber forest products. The analysis is based on survey responses obtained from 1,000 consumers across the nation. Results reveal that while online purchasing of non-timber forest products may not be as active compared to other sectors, various consumer behavior characteristics such as online purchase experience, socio-economic variables, online purchase dependency, and information utilization significantly influence purchasing decisions. These findings shed light on the understanding of consumer behavior through online platforms, particularly in non-timber forest products where analytical attempts have been relatively scarce compared to other agricultural products. The insights derived from this analysis could serve as fundamental data for understanding online consumption patterns, especially in sectors where research on consumer behavior remains limited. To expand the consumption of short-shelf-life perishable goods, which relatively have lower online consumption compared to other fresh agricultural products, it is necessary to conduct analyses that identify the socioeconomic characteristics and corresponding needs of consumers. Additionally, analyses should be conducted to explore the potential for developing and utilizing processed foods for online consumption. These analyses should be carried out in conjunction with an understanding the socio-economic characteristics identified in this study.

  • Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), a 42-amino-acid hormone, exerts multifaceted effects in physiology, most notably in metabolism, obesity, and inflammation. Its significance extends to neuroprotection, promoting neuronal proliferation, maintaining physiological homeostasis, and inhibiting cell death, all of which play a crucial role in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Through intricate signaling pathways involving its cognate receptor (GIPR), a member of the G protein-coupled receptors, GIP maintains cellular homeostasis and regulates a defense system against ferroptosis, an essential process in aging. Our study, utilizing GIP-overexpressing mice and in vitro cell model, elucidates the pivotal role of GIP in preserving neuronal integrity and combating age-related damage, primarily through the Epac/Rap1 pathway. These findings shed light on the potential of GIP as a therapeutic target for the pathogenesis of ferroptosis in neurodegenerative diseases and aging.

  • Bananas (Musa spp.), which serve millions of people worldwide, face a serious threat from Fusarium wilt (FW) disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). Developing disease-resistant varieties particularly through breeding is challenging due to banana's seedless nature (parthenocarpic). As an alternative, cold plasma (CP) technology, has the potential to be used for crop improvement. Our study demonstrates a favourable impact of CP on the growth performance of banana (Berangan cultivar, AAA) in terms of height, leaf number and stem diameter. CP-treated plants also displayed delayed disease progression as well as lower disease severity indicated by slightly lower value of leaf symptoms index and rhizome discoloration index compared to the control plants. Additionally, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed differential expression of several defence (PR1, WRKY22, PAL, and CEBiP) and growth (Cytochrome P450, NAC68, and CAT) related genes in CP-treated plants, particularly in conjunction with Foc infection. These findings shed light on the potential use of CP in managing FW in banana and offer insights into possible mechanism behind improved traits.

  • Over the years, numerous evaluations of material attractiveness have been performed for conventional light water reactors to better understand the nature of the spent fuel material and its desirability for misuse at different points in the nuclear fuel cycle. However, availability of such assessments for newer, Generation IV reactors such as Molten Salt Reactors is rather limited. In the present study we address the gap in knowledge of material attractiveness for molten salt reactor systems and describe the nature of irradiated fuel salts which the nuclear safeguards community might be faced with in the near future as more and more such reactors enter commission and operation. Within the scope of the paper, we use a large database of simulated irradiated fuel salt isotopics (and other derived quantities such as gamma activity, decay heat, and neutron emission rates) developed specifically for a molten salt reactor concept in order to shed some light on possible weapons usability of uranium and plutonium present in the irradiated fuel salts. This has been achieved by proposing a new attractiveness metric that is better suited for quantifying attractiveness of irradiated salts from a model molten salt concept. The said metric has been computed using a database that has been created by simulating the irradiation of molten fuel salt in a concept core over a wide range of operational parameters (burnup, initial enrichment, and cooling time) using the Monte-Carlo particle transport code, Serpent. With the help of this attractiveness metric, the findings from this study have shown that in relative terms, molten salt spent fuel is more attractive than spent fuel produced by a conventional light water reactor. The findings also underscore the need for strengthened safeguards measures for such spent fuel. These results are expected to be useful in the future for regulatory authorities as well as for nuclear safeguards inspectors for designing a functional safeguards verification routine for irradiated fuel of such unique nature.

  • The process of cultivation and production of oak mushroom (Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler) on sawdust surface beds were investigated. Sawdust surface bed cultivation is the method by which oak mushrooms are cultured and produced on sterilized sawdust surface bed without using bags. The bed was made by inoculating with 3 to 1 ratio of bed sawdust to oak mushroom mycelial inoculum. The sawdust bed medium with 65% water content was pasteurized at $65^{\circ}C$, inoculated with sawdust spawn and spread on the surface on vinyl film in cultivation shed. During 78 days of cultivation period, water content in the medium varied from 61 to 72%, its pH decreased from 5.6 to 3.9~4.6 and ergosterol concentration increased to $0.33{\sim}0.59{\mu}g/g$. $CO_2$ concentration in the medium rapidly increased to 8.06% in two weeks. In seven weeks the medium surface started browning and $CO_2$ concentration increased to about 5.63%. Until 11th week the $CO_2$ concentration was maintained at 6~7%. After removing the plastic cover on the bed for ventilation in 12 weeks, $CO_2$ within the bed reduced dramatically to 1.5%. In the cultivation shed the internal temperature was $7.1{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ and humidity was 27.3 to 100%, while bed temperature ranged $11.6{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Oak mushroom fruiting started from late July, in 120 days after bed establishment in late March and continued for approximately 100 days until early December with eight cycles of irrigation treatment. The mushroom yield of the eight cycles were 288~352 kg during the 1st (7/29~8/4) to 3rd cycle (9/3~9/7), 800 kg at the 4th cycle (9/19~9/24), 1,296~1,853 kg during 5th (10/3~10/8) to 7th cycle (4.11~11/9) and 990 kg at 8th cycle (11/23~12/7). Total production was approximately 7.4 tons from 33.0 tons of oak sawdust medium, thus harvest efficiency of the mushroom production was approximately 22.4%.

  • Since the temperature during summer is higher than the temperature which is suitable for milking cows, high temperature stress have severely affected dairy farmers due to decreased milk production. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of rainwater sprinkling system for reducing heat stress in milking cows during intense heat time. Treatment conditions were divided into 2 types ; No rainwater sprinkling (T1) and Rainwater sprinkling (T2). Temperature in the milking cow shed, feed intake, milk yield, respiration rate and rectal temperature were measured to investigate the effect of hot environment on the physiological, productive responses in milkig cows. The results obtained are summarized as follows : The daily milk yields were 24.5 and 27.4 kg per head in T1 and T2 during experimental period. The respiration rate was significantly higher in T1 than those of T2. The rectal temperature in T1 ($40.6^{\circ}C$) was higher than those of T2 ($39.8^{\circ}C$). It was suggested that rainwater sprinkling system installed in the dairy cow shed was effective means to reduce heat stress of milking cow.

  • Three-week-old ICR SPF mice were orally inoculated with one of 5 doses ranging from $2{\;}\times{\;}10^2{\;}to{\;}2{\;}\times{\;}10^6$ oocysts of Crwptosporidium tsuris (strain MCR) per mouse. Oocyst inoculation was directly proportional to the amount of oocysts shed and was inversely proportional to the period required for peals oocyst production and to the prepatent period. Peak oocyst production occurred between fifteen and thirty-one days with a patent period from 61 to 64 days. Three days after all mice stopped shedding oocysts, they were orally challenged with a single dose of $2{\;}\times{\;}10^6$ oocysts or the same species. Marked seroconversion for IgG antibody accompanied recovery from mice inoculated with $5{\;}\times{\;}10^5$ oocysts. Mice administered with carrageenan excreted a small number of oocysts for 49.0 days on the average after challenge inoculation (ACI) and control mice for 14.2 days in a dose-independent fashion. Just before challenge infection, phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages ($M{\phi}$) and the number of peripheral $M{\phi}$ were dramatically decreased. Mild challenge infection implies that the immunogenicity of C. nuris (strain MCR) is very strong, despite $M{\phi}$ blocker carrageenan administration.
