A Case of Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in Parapharyngeal Space (부인두 공간에서 발생한 악성 말초 신경초 종양 1예)

  • The malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor is an extremely rare soft tissue sarcoma. It is a highly malignant sarcoma, which is locally invasive, frequently leading to multiple recurrences and eventual metastatic spread. The peak incidence of disease is known to occur sporadically between the age of 20s and 50s, and is usually associated with the neurofibromatosis type I. In human body, the trunk and extremities are the most commonly involved sites, with only 8-14% of all lesions appearing in the head and neck region. We present a case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor involving the right parapharynx in a 48-year-old patient who complained of headaches in the right parietal area and of dysphagia that aggravated over a month. After surgery, tumor was finally diagnosed as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor by histopathologic examinations. The authors report a case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the right parapharynx with a review of the literature.

Exclusion of Na+ and ClIons by the central parenchyma in leaf sheaths of rice and the involvement of lamina joint

  • Rice is highly sensitive to salt stress especially in its early growth stage, which thus is one of the major constraints in rice production. In rice plants, salt sensitivity is associated with the accumulation of $Na^+$ in the shoots, especially in the photosynthetic tissues. High salt concentrations in soil cause high $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ transport to the shoot and preferential accumulation of those ions in older leaves, which decreases $K^+$ in the shoot, photosynthetic activity and grain yield. Salt exclusion capacity at the leaf sheath is therefore considered to be one of the main mechanisms of salt tolerance. In addition, it is suspected that the lamina joint might be involved in the salt transport from leaf sheath to leaf blade. This research aims to determine if leaf sheaths of rice exclude a large amount of $Na^+$ only or other ions such as $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Cl^-$ as well, to identify tissues in the leaf sheath, which accumulate $Na^+$, and to examine if the lamina joint is involved in the salt exclusion by the leaf sheath. The rice seedlings of salt tolerant genotype FL478 and salt sensitive genotype IR29 were independently treated with NaCl, KCl, $MgCl_2$ and $CaCl_2$, and Taichung 65 and its near-isogenic liguleless line (T65lg) were treated with NaCl. Then, the content of $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Cl^-$ ions and their specific location were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Ion Chromatograph, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. Results showed that leaf sheaths of FL478 and IR29 accumulated a large amount of $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Cl^-$ ons, and thus excluded them from leaf blades when treated with high concentration of each salt. When treated with NaCl, the highest $Na^+$ concentration was found in the basal part of leaf sheaths of both cultivars. Moreover, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the central parenchyma cells of the leaf sheath were the site where most Na, Cl, and K were retained under salinity in the salt tolerant genotype FL478. Also, the concentration of $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions in leaf sheaths and leaf blades was comparable between T65 and T65lg, indicating that the lamina joint may not be involved in the exclusion of $Na^+$, $Cl^-$ and $K^+$ by the leaf sheath from the leaf blade under salinity. Therefore, we conclude that the central parenchyma cells of basal part of leaf sheath are the site that plays a physiological role to exclude $Na^+$ in the shoots of rice without the involvement of the lamina joint.

Ornamented Dagger Sheath from Gyerim-ro Tomb No.14, Gyeongju: On the Joining Process of Gold Granules (경주 계림로 14호분 장식보검 금립의 접합방법에 관한 고찰)

  • In most gold objects crafted using the granulation technique that have been thus far discovered in the Korean Peninsula, granules were joined using a soldering alloy of gold and silver. However, it was recently revealed through SEM-EDS analysis performed on the ornamented dagger sheath from Gyerim-ro Tomb No.14 in Gyeongju that the gold granules were joined to the surface of this sheath using an entirely different technique. The gold granules on the Gyerim-ro dagger sheath are evenly sized and shaped, the surface has a dendritic texture. Dendritic textures are a characteristic feature of metal alloys, not observed in pure metals. As a matter of fact, the gold granules were made of a ternary alloy of 77wt% Au, 18wt% Ag and 4wt% Cu. Due to this component, the alloy has a melting point below 1000℃ (approximately 980℃), which is significantly lower than 1064℃, the melting temperature of pure gold. This makes it possible to join the gold granules directly to the surface of the sheath by briefly heating them to high temperature, without the use of soldering or any other media. When examined through SEM image, the surface of the sheath showed no traces of soldering, it suggests that the granules were joined through unaided fusion.

  • This study was conducted to investigation of effect of removal times and parts of leaf sheath by planting deph(0.6cm) on growth and flowering in forcing of Lilium species. Plant height is reduced by leaf sheath removal at early growth stages when bulbs were planted 6 cm of depth in 'Gelria and 0 cm in both of Jolanda' and Dream Land', respectively, but stem diameter and flower size were little different. Days to flowering of 3 cultivar except 'Gelria' were shorten in 6cm plant depth.

  • A malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a type of sarcoma that arises from peripheral nerves or cells of the associated nerve sheath. This tumor most commonly metastasizes to the lung and metastases to the spinal cord and brain are very rare. We describe a case of young patient with spinal cord and brain metastases resulting from MPNST. An 18-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of low back pain and radiating pain to his anterior thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a paraspinal mass that extended from the central space of L2 to right psoas muscle through the right L2-3 foraminal space. The patient underwent surgery and the result of the histopathologic study was diagnostic for MPNST. Six months after surgery, follow-up images revealed multiple spinal cord and brain metastases. The patient was managed with chemotherapy, but died several months later. Despite complete surgical excision, the MPNST progressed rapidly and aggressively. Thus, patients with MPNST should be followed carefully to identify local recurrence or metastasis as early as possible.

  • We developed the model equations to investigate the particle movement and growth theoretically in a-Si plasma CVD reactor, where those particles act as the source of contamination. We included the effects of fluid convection, particle diffusion and external forces (ion drag force, electrostatic force and gravitational force) onto the particles to analyze the movements of particles in plasma reactor. Taking into account the particle charge distribution, the particle growth by coagulation between the charged particles was investigated. Most of those particles are located in the region near the sheath boundaries by the balance between the ion drag and electrostatic forces. The particle concentrations in the sheath region and in the bulk plasma region are almost zero. The sizes of the predator particles increase with time by the coagulation with protoparticles and, as a result, the surface area and the average charge of predator particles also increase with time.

  • We experienced 1 case of the giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath penetrating the middle phalanx of the third toe. Patient had painless huge mass all around the third phalanx of the foot which made a penetrating hole through the middle phalanx of the third toe in plain radiography. The period from the onset of the symptom until operation was about several years. The mass extended to the base of the distal phalanx and compressed digital nerves and vessels. Patient presented with a chief complaint of the pain on the plantar aspect of the toe and limitation of the motion of the distal interphalangeal joint. Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath was cured by total en block resection.

  • Synovial chondromatosis is a benign lesion forming multiple round cartilagenous nodules or osseous loose bodies in joint cavity. Predilection sites are known as knee, hip and elbow joints. However, the involvement of ankle joint was rarely reported in the literature. Moreover, extraarticular chondromatosis in synovial sheath or bursa of extremities is extremely rare. We present a case of synovial chondromatosis of the left ankle joint and flexor hallucis longus tendon sheath.

  • Dielectric breakdown accidents have been mainly occurred in the vicinity of service entrance section in underground power transmission systems. One cause among them is due to the excessive component value of sheath located around service entrance of cable. In this paper, as one of the alternative to prevent these accidents, the change of cross bond grounding system and the location change of IJ(Insulation Joint) are suggested. Also, to evaluate effectiveness of this changing system, circulating current and induced voltage of sheath were analyzed in steady and transient state. By comparison of the analytical results for the several possible changing systems, a grounding system and location of IJ which has the smallest sheath component values is proposed. In this paper, analysis to evaluate the proposed system is carried out by EMTP/ATPDraw. It can be used as a valuable operational material to prevent accident of the service entrance section in underground power transmission system.

Ganglion of the Flexor Tendon Sheath between A1 Pulley and A2 Pulley

  • Few articles have been written about the flexor tendon sheath ganglion in the finger, especially, between A1 pulley and A2 pulley. We report on rare cases of flexor tendon sheath ganglion with one symptomatic and two asymptomatic. All masses were evaluated using real-time ultrasonography and well-defined anechoic cystic lesions with posterior enhancement were observed. A 17-year-old female had a small mass at the 4th metacarpophalageal joint of her right hand, with pain and triggering. The patient underwent simple excision and a ganglion measuring $1.0{\times}0.8$ cm in size was derived from Camper's chiasm, between A1 pulley and A2 pulley. In two asymptomatic cases, ganglia measuring less than 0.5 cm in size observed. Based on our experience, real-time ultrasonography would be an excellent diagnostic modality in determining the treatment method in flexor tendon sheath ganglia, and surgical excision is recommended in symptomatic, especially triggering patients.
