  • In this study, a simplified three-dimensional calculation model is developed for the dynamic analysis of soil-pile group-supertall building systems excited by wind loads using the substructure method. Wind loads acting on a 300-m building in different wind directions and terrain conditions are obtained from synchronous pressure measurements conducted in a wind tunnel. The effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the first natural frequency, wind-induced static displacement, root mean square (RMS) of displacement, and RMS of acceleration at the top of supertall buildings are analyzed. The findings demonstrate that with decreasing soil shear wave velocity, the first natural frequency decreases and the static displacement, RMS of displacement and RMS of acceleration increase. In addition, as soil material damping decreases, the RMS of displacement and the RMS of acceleration increase.

  • Laboratory testing of representative rock specimens is of fundamental necessity for the successful design and/or assessment of facilities associated with many kinds of underground exploitation, including the geological disposal of radioactive nuclear waste. As a fundamental and systematic study, a series of measurements of the physical, mechanical and hydraulic properties of Inada granite and Shirahama sandstone, two rock types that are widely available in Japan, have been performed. This paper presents the results of a study of the effective porosity, density, compressive and shear wave velocity, unconfined compressive strength and permeability of the two rocks. The anisotropy and the effects of confining pressure on the permeability of the rocks, as well as the relationships among the physical, mechanical and hydraulic properties, are also investigated and discussed.

  • Using an oedometer cell instrumented to measure the evolution of electromagnetic properties, small strain stiffness, and temperature, we conducted consolidation tests on four types of sediments. The tested specimens include sediments with different gas hydrate saturation at four stages of loading. The test results show that the electromagnetic and mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing marine sediments are governed by the vertical effective stress, stress history, porosity, hydrate saturation, fabric, ionic concentration of the pore fluid, and temperature. The results also show that permittivity and electrical conductivity data can be combined to estimate hydrate volume fraction in laboratory sediments, methodology that might eventually be extended for estimation of hydrate concentrations in field settings.

  • This essay is a general review of the application of ultrasonic NDE techniques to the performance assessment and characterization of composite materials. A brief review of ultrasonic input-output characterization of a composite plate by shear waves is presented. A theoretical development of ultrasonic wave propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media excited, respectively, by a circular transducer and an oscillatory point source is summarized. Some experimental results are described in which ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements give insight into material degradation of fatigued composite laminates. Ultrasonic determination of the elastic constants of a composite plate and an experimental attempt at ultrasonic testing of an isotropic plate containing a crack are also included. A recent effort for the characterization of viscoelastic materials using the ultrasonic NDE technique is outlined. Finally, the reliability of ultrasonic NDE is briefly touched upon.

  • In this paper shows the evaluation of the liquefaction potential of soils using in situ test. There are different types of in situ test used in the evaluation the liquefaction potential. In the particular study the Standard penetration test(SPT), Cone penetration test(CPT), ad Seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) were used. The SPT N value has been used all over for a very long time. The evaluation of the liquefaction of soil was preformed using the worldwide renowned CPT and SCPT. Shake 91 program was used to evaluate the results obtained by different in situ test and were later analyzed.

  • A response of a swept wing boundary layer to a single free-stream stationary axial vortex of a limited spanwise extent is considered as an example of typical problems that one can find in laminar-turbulent transition research and control. The response is dominated by streamwise velocity perturbations that grow quasi-exponentially downstream. It is shown that the formation of the boundary layer disturbance occurs for the most part close to the leading edge. The disturbance represents itself a wave packet consisted of the waves with characteristics specific for cross-flow instability. However, an admixture of growing disturbances whose origin can be attributed to transient effects and to a distributed receptivity mechanism is also identified.

  • For safety evaluation of a rockfill dam, it is often necessary to investigate spatial distribution and dynamic characterization of weak zones such as fractures. For this purpose, both seismic and electric methods are adopted together in this research. The former employs the multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method, and aims at the mapping of 2-D shear-wave velocity (Vs) profile along the dam axis that can be associated with dynamic properties of filled materials. The latter is carried out by DC- resistivity survey with a main purpose of mapping of spatial variations of physical properties of dam materials. Results from both methods are compared in their signature of anomalous zones. In addition, downhole seismic survey was carried out at three points within the seismic survey lines and results by downhole seismic survey are compared with the MASW results. We conclude that the MASW is an efficient method for dynamic characterization of dam-filling materials, and also that joint analyses of these two seemingly unrelated methods can lead to an effective safety evaluation of rock-fill dam.

  • Displacement response and corresponding maximum response energy of structures are key parameters to assess the dynamic effect or even more destructive structural damage of the structures. By employing them, this research has compared the structural responses of jacket supported offshore wind turbine (OWT) subjected to seismic excitations apprehending earthquake incidence, when (a) soil-structure interaction (SSI) has been ignored and (b) SSI has been considered. The effect of earthquakes under arbitrary angle of excitation on the OWT has been investigated by means of the energy based wavelet transformation method. Displacement based fragility analysis is then utilized to convey the probability of exceedance of the OWT at different soil site conditions. The results show that the uncertainty arises due to multi-component seismic excitations along with the diminution trend of shear wave velocity of soil and it tends to reduce the efficiency of the OWT to stand against the ground motions.

  • This paper is concerned with the simplified criterion given in ASCE 4-98, for determining whether soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis is required for seismic response analysis of nuclear power plant structures. In this study, the criterion is evaluated for a couple of example structures including an existing nuclear power plant and the Hualien large-scale seismic test building. Forced vibration analysis and seismic response analysis are carried out using the simple stick model with soil springs and an elaborated SSI analytical model. From the numerical analyses, it is found that the criterion may not allow the fixed-base analysis for bedrock with shear wave velocity of greater than 1,100m/s which is a well-known criterion for a rock site. In addition, it is indicated that peak amplification as well as the peak broadening specified in NRC RG 1.122. shall be considered to include the effects of SSI.
