According to the seismic design criteria for structural buildings in Korea, the ground is classified into 5 types based on the average shear wave velocity measured from elastic wave tests on site and seismic load applied to the structure is estimated. However, elastic wave tests in site, however, on the engineering fill, cannot be performed during the construction period. Therefore, to evaluate shear wave velocity considering field conditions, resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests are performed and compared with various elastic wave test results. As a result, if confining pressure for the tests using engineering fill are considered properly, we can obtain similar results comparing with those of elastic wave tests. In addition, by considering the effect of maximum shear modulus and confining pressure by RC/TS tests, n values shows typical values ranging from 0.434 to 0.561 so that utilization of RC/TS tests can be useful to infer shear modulus in field.

Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) has high fluidity and self-compaction characteristics. CLSM is mainly used for backfilling the excavated road. Early-age properties of CLSM should be characterized for fast restoration of the road. In this study, shear wave monitoring and Vicat needle test are performed to investigate the early-age properties of CLSM depending on the setting time. CLSM consists of CSA cement, fly ash, silt and sand, accelerator, and water. Five fly ashes with different chemical properties are used for CLSM samples. The penetration of CLSM along setting time is obtained through the Vicat needle test. A pair of bender elements are placed in a mold for shear wave measurement, and the change in shear waves with the setting time is monitored. The experimental results show that, regardless of the type of fly ash, the penetration depth decreases and the shear wave velocity increases with the setting time. Depending on the type of fly ash, initial and final times and shear wave velocity change. After testing, the correlation between penetration and shear wave velocity is obtained with high coefficient of determination. The shear wave measurement technique using the bender element can be used to identify early-age properties.
In this study, we propose a joint inversion method, using genetic algorithms, to determine the shear-wave velocity structure of deep sedimentary layers from receiver functions and surface-wave phase velocity. Numerical experiments with synthetic data indicate that the proposed method can avoid the trade-off between shear-wave velocity and thickness that arises when inverting the receiver function only, and the uncertainty in deep structure from surface-wave phase velocity inversion alone. We apply the method to receiver functions obtained from earthquake records with epicentral distances of about 100 km, and Rayleigh-wave phase velocities obtained from a microtremor array survey in the Kanto Plain, Japan. The estimated subsurface structure is in good agreement with the previous results of seismic refraction surveys and deep borehole data.

Ground stiffness(shear wave velocity) is one of the key parameters in geotechnical earthquake engineering. An In-situ seismic technique has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others in stiffness measurements. By combining the crosshole and seismic cone techniques and utilizing favourable features of bender elements, a new hybrid probe has been developed in order to enhance data quality and easiness of testing. The basic structure of the probe, called "MudFork", is a fork composed of two blades, on each of which source and receiver bender elements were mounted respectively. To evaluate the disturbance caused by the penetration of the probe, shear wave velocity measurements were carried out in the Kaolinite slurry in the laboratory. Finally, the probe was penetrated in coastal mud near Incheon, Korea, using SPT(standard penetration test)rods pushed with a routine boring machine and shear wave velocity measurements were carried out. The results were verified with data from laboratory and cone testing. The performance of the probe turns out to be excellent in terms of data quality and testing convenience.

The objective of this study is to estimate shear wave velocity of rockfill materials by making practical use of the micro-earthquake records which are ordinarily obtained at a domestic rockfill dam and to verify its applicability. Micro-earthquake records were obtained at the site of Heongseong dam and Soyanggang dam, which are the existing multi-purpose dams in Korea. In the previous study, the fundamental periods of each dam were already evaluated by analyzing the response spectrum of the observed records. In this study, numerical analyses varying shear moduli of rockfill zone were carried out using the acceleration histories measured at the abutment as input ground motions. From comparison between the fundamental periods calculated by numerical analyses and measured records, the shear wave velocities with depth were estimated. It is found that the effect of different earthquake events on shear wave velocity estimation for the target dam materials is negligible and the shear wave velocity can be consistently evaluated. Furthermore, comparing the shear wave velocity with the previous researchers' empirical relationships and field test results, applicability of suggested method is verified. Therefore, in case that it is impossible to conduct field tests and estimation is preliminary, the suggested method can be practically used.
The reasonable assessment of the shear stiffness of a dredged soft ground and soft clay is difficult due to the soil disturbance. This study addresses the development and application of a new in-situ shear wave measuring apparatus (field velocity probe: FVP), which overcomes several of the limitations of conventional methods. Design concerns of this new apparatus include the disturbance of soils, cross-talking between transducers, electromagnetic coupling between cables, self acoustic insulation, the constant travel distance of S-wave, the rotation of the transducer, directly transmitted wave through a frame from transducer to transducer, and protection of the transducer and the cable. These concerns are effectively eliminated by continuous improvements through performing field and laboratory tests. The shear wave velocity of the FVP is simply calculated, without any inversion process, by using the travel distance and the first arrival time. The developed FVP Is tested in soil up to 30m in depth. The experimental results show that the FVP can produce every detailed shear wave velocity profiles in sand and clay layers. In addition, the shear wave velocity at the tested site correlates well with the cone tip resistance. This study suggests that the FVP may be an effective technique for measuring the shear wave velocity in the field to assess dynamic soil properties in soft ground.

This paper describes a theoretical model and acoustic analysis of hysteresis of contacting surfaces subject to compression pressure. Contacting surfaces known to be nonlinear and hysteretic is considered as a simple spring that has a complex stiffness connecting discontinuous displacements between two solid contact boundaries. Mathematical formulation for 1-D interfacial wave propagation between two contacting solids is developed using the complex spring model to derive the dispersion relation between the interface wave speed and the complex interfacial stiffness. Existence of the interface wave propagating along the hysteretic interface is studied in theory and discussed by investigating the solution to the dispersion equation. Unlike the linear interface without hysteresis, there can exist only one distinct mode of interface waves for the hysteretic interface, which is anti-symmetric motion. The anti-symmetric mode of interface wave propagates with the velocity faster than the Rayleigh surface wave but less than the shear wave depending on the interfacial stiffness. If the contacting surfaces are compressed so much that the linear interfacial stiffness is very high, the hysteretic stiffness does not affect the interface wave velocity. However, it has an effect on the speed of interface wave for a loosely contact surfaces with a relatively low linear stiffness. It is also found that the phase velocity of anti-symmetric wave mode converges to the shear wave velocity in despite of the linear stiffness value if the hysteretic stiffness approaches 0.5.
To investigate the characteristics of the shear wave velocity of cohesive soils and residual soils in Korea, Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Suspension PS Logging tests (SPS) and other soil tests were performed to analyze the shear wave velocity at each layer For these purposes, 2 study sites are selected: one is cohesive soils and the other is residual soils. As a results, new empirical formulas are proposed from the relationship between strength of the ground (N value) and shear wave velocity from the test data at each layer. In the case of cohesive soils, the proposed relationships are nearly similar to empirical formulas, however, in the case of residual soils there was a little difference between the empirical formulas and measured velocities in this study. Case examples for shear wave velocites are presented with depth, N-values and compared with Ohta et al. (1978) empirical formula.

Soils containing vanishing materials lead changes in the microstructure of particulate media due to water inflow. Thus, dissolution renders some local unstability. As the moisture contents decease, the component of the vanished materials may affects on the cementation of paniculate materials. This cementation phenomenon has a huge influence on the stiffness, strength and stability under lower stress level. The goal of this study is to introduce the cementation effects on a compressional wave velocity, a shear wave velocity, and the resonant frequency of shear waves. The glass bead and salt water with different mole contents are used. Test results show that the changes of shear and compressional wave velocities consist of three stages. In the first region, compressional wave velocities increase and shear wave velocities decrease with a decreases in reducing water contents from 100% to 90~95%. In the second region, shear and compressional wave velocities become stable at 90~95% to 10% of the water contents. In the third region, shear and compressional wave velocities increases dramatically with a decrease in the water content due to the capillary force and cementation of salt. Furthermore, the resonant frequency of the shear waves shows similar phenomenon. Specimens prepared by glass beads and salt water are proved to be able to provide a meaningful insight in under structural behaviors of the cementation.
