A large eddy simulation (LES) has been conducted for the flow and heat transfer in a dimpled channel. Two dimple depths of 0.2 and 0.3 times of the dimple print diameter (= D) have been compared at the bulk Reynolds number of 20,000. Three Reynolds numbers of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 have been studied, while the dimple depth is kept as 0.2 D. With the deeper dimple, the flow reattachment occurs father downstream inside the dimple, so that the heat transfer is not as effectively enhanced as the case with shallow ones. At the low Reynolds number of 5,000, the Nusselt number ratio is as high as those for the higher Reynolds number, although the value of heat transfer coefficient decreases because of the weak shear layer vortices.

For the analysis of vertical vibrations of a ship's hull, the Timoshenko beam analogy is accepted up to seven or eight-node modes provided that the system parameters are properly calculated. As to the shear coefficient, it has been a common practice to apply the strain energy method or the projected area method. The theoretical objection to the former is that it ignores lateral contraction due to Poisson's ratio, and the latter is of extreme simplifications. Recently, Cowper's and Stephen's shear coefficient formulas have drawn ship vibration analysts' attentions because these formulas, derivation of which are based on an integrations of the equations of three-dimensional elasticity, take Poisson's ratio into account. Providing computer programs for calculation of the shear coefficient of ship sections modeled as thin-walked multicell sections by each of the forementioned methods, the authors calculated natural vibration characteristics of a bulk carrier and of a container ship by the transfer matrix method using shear coefficients obtained by each of the methods, and discussed the results in comparision. The major conclusions resulted from this investigation are as follows: (1) The shear coefficients taking account of the effects of Poisson's ratio, Cowper's $K_c$ and Stephen's $K_s$, result in higher values of about 10% in maximum as compared with the shear coefficient $K_o$ based on the conventional strain energy methods; (a) $K_c/K_o{\cong}1.05\;and\;K_s/K_o{\cong}1.10$ for ships having single skin side-shell such as a bulk carrier. (b) $K_c/K_o{\cong}1.02\;and\;K_s/K_o{\cong}1.05$ for ships having longitudinally through bulkheads and/or double side-shells in the portion of the cargo hod such as a container carrier. (2) The distributions of the effective shear area along the ship's hull based on each of $K_o,\;K_c\;and\;K_s$ are similar each another except the both end portions. (3) Natural frequencies and mode shapes of the hull based on each of $K_c\;and\;K_s$ are of small differences as compared each other. (4) In cases of using $K_c\;or\;K_s$ in ship vibration analysis, it is also desirable to have the bending rigidity be corrected according to the effective breadth concept. And then, natural frequencies and mode shapes calculated with the bending rigidity corrected in the above and with each of $K_o,\;K_c\;and\;K_s$ result in small differences as compared each another. (5) Referring to those mentioned in the above (3) and (4) and to the full-scale experimental results reported by Asmussen et al.[17], and considering laboursome to prepare the computer input data, the following suggestions can safely be made; (a) Use of $K_o$ in ship vibration analysis is appropriate in practical senses. (b) Use of $K_c$ is appropriate even for detailed vibration analysis of a ship's hull. (6) The effective shear area based on the projected area method is acceptable for the two-node mode.
Oxygen is a key substrate in animal cell metabolism and its consumption is thus a parameter of great interest for monitoring and control in animal cell culture bioreactor. The use of a gas-permeable membrane offered the possibility to provide the required quantity of oxygen into the culture. while avoiding problems of foaming or shear damage generally linked to sparging. For determining the optimum DO control strategy of this gas-permeable membrane aeration bioreactor, the oxygen transfer rate coefficient was measured with varying $N_2$ ratio in inlet air. The results showed that an increasing mass flow rate of nitrogen reduced the $K_La$ value. and 5% nitrogen in air did not result in any oxygen limitation.

In this study, condensation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-22. Two internal geometries were tested ; one with smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the followin~ range of variables ; vapor quality($0.1{\sim}0.9$), mass flux($200{\sim}600kg/m^2s$) and heat flux($5{\sim}15kW/m^2$). The micro-fin tube showed higher heat transfer coefficients compared with those of the smooth tube. The difference increased as the vapor quality increased. Surface tension force acting on the micro-fin surface at the high vapor quality is believed to be responsible. Different from the trends of the smooth tube, where the heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flux increased, the heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube was independent of the mass flux at high vapor quality, which implies that the surface tension effect on the fin overwhelms the vapor shear effect at the high vapor quality. Present data(except those at low mass flux and high quality) were well correlated by equivalent Reynolds number, Existing correlations overpredicted the present data at high mass flux.

Post-tensioned precast concrete system (PPS) consists of U-shaped precast wide beams and concrete column. The continuity of beam-column joint is provided with the topping concrete on the PC shell beam and post-tensioning. Nonlinear analysis was conducted, using ANSYS, a finite-element analysis program, to obtain data for determining the characteristics of the structure and to allow various parametric analyses for post-tensioned wide beam-column connections. In this analysis, the Solid 65 element was used, in which concrete element had 8 nodes and each node had 3 degrees of freedomIn. Solid 65, the shear-transfer factor reflects a decrease of shear strength for the positions with cracks, as an impact factor to make the analysis value approximate the experiment value. In this study, the behavior of test specineus were most closely predicted to the experimental results, when the shear-transfer coefficient 0.85 was used for a closed crack, and 0.2 was used for an open crack.

It is very important to detect and evaluate the surface or subsurface flaws because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Rayleigh wave and creeping wave are commonly used for the detection of surface and subsurface flaws. These techniques, however, have following problems. Each amplitudes are remarkably affected by the surface condition and evaluation of echo pattern is usually difficult because shear wave mode propagate in the material at the same time. On the other hand, surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface layer is an attractive technique for the surface or subsurface material characterization and this technique is useful to solve the problems mentioned above. In this paper, The stability and transmission coefficient of SH waves through a viscous fluid layer is theoretically studied and simulated. Its results agreed well with the theoretical expectation for the experimental verification. These experimental results show that viscosity of couplants, thickness of couplant and surface roughness are closely related to transfer efficiency in surface SH angle beam method.

The one-third calibrating relation by steady solution can cause large error when applied to an unsteady flow with large amplitude waves. Extended calibrating method, which can treat the normal convective contribution, is developed. The normal mass convective term is included into the 2-D mass transport equation by means of rms value and random function. The unknown shear rate is numerically determined by solving the 2-D mass transport equation inversely. This recovery method which predicts the unknown shear rate is constructed. It is found that it works very well without distortion. The inclusion of the normal convective term has a negligible effect on the mass transfer coefficient.
4.0$\times$10-3 (IU/cells/day) of maximum specific scu-PA production, which was higher than those by a 75$\textrm{cm}^2$ T-flask and conventional perfusion systems, was maintained by tube-type bioreactor at 0.35 (1/h) of perfusion rate corresponding to 0.15 (dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) of shear stress. The production of scu-PA is also increased as shear stress was slowly increased, which is similar to natural human blood circulation. The tube reactor proves that there may be no limitation of oxygen supply by showing 1.0 (1/h) of oxygen transfer coefficient at steady state and this system yields much lower shear stress of 0.3(dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) than that of 5-8(dynes/$\textrm{cm}^2$) by conventional agitation systems.

The calibrating method for an electrochemical Probe, neglecting the effect of the normal velocity on the mass transport, can cause large errors when applied to the measurement of wall shear rates in thin wavy flow with large amplitude waves. An extended calibrating method is developed to consider the contributions of the normal velocity. The inclusion of the turbulence-induced normal velocity term is found to have a negligible effect on the mass transfer coefficient. The contribution wave-induced normal velocity can be classified on the dimensionless parameter V. If V above a critical value of V, $V_{crit}$, the effects of the wave-induced normal velocity become larger with an increase in V. IF V its effects negligible for V < $V_{crit}$. The unknown shear rate is numerically determined by solving the 2-D mass transport equation inversely. The president inverse method can predict the unknown shear rate more accurately in thin wavy flow with large amplitude waves than the previous method.
Reinforced concrete corbels are generally used to transfer loads within a structural system, such as buildings, bridges, and facilities in general. They commonly present low aspect ratio, requiring an accurate model for shear strength prediction in order to promote flexural behavior. The model described here, originally developed for walls, was adapted for corbels. The model is based on a reinforced concrete panel, described by constitutive laws for concrete and steel and applied in a fixed direction. Equilibrium in the orthogonal direction to the shearing force allows for the estimation of the shear stress versus strain response. The original model yielded conservative results with important scatter, thus various modifications were implemented in order to improve strength predictions: 1) recalibration of the strut (crack) direction, capturing the absence of transverse reinforcement and axial load in most corbels, 2) inclusion of main (boundary) reinforcement in the equilibrium equation, capturing its participation in the mechanism, and 3) decrease in aspect ratio by considering the width of the loading plate in the formulation. To analyze the behavior of the theoretical model, a database of 109 specimens available in the literature was collected. The model yielded an average model-to-test shear strength ratio of 0.98 and a coefficient of variation of 0.16, showing also that most test variables are well captured with the model, and providing better results than the original model. The model strength prediction is compared with other models in the literature, resulting in one of the most accurate estimates.
