  • In Korea there are recently many attempts to expand a temporary soil nailing system into a permanent soil nailing system since the first construction in 1993. In the soil nailing system, the rigid facing walls act on restraining the deformation of the ground. These are purposed to minimize the damage of adjacent buildings or underground structures. In Korea, to minimize the relaxation of the ground, the soil nailing system in the downtown area is often used experientially together with braced cuts, sheet pile walls, soil cement walls (SCW), or jet grouting walls. However, for the conservative design, the confining effects by the stiff facing have been ignored because the proper design approach of considering the facing stiffness has not been proposed. In this study, various laboratory model tests are carried out to examining the influence the rigidity of facings on the global safety of soil nailing system. Also, the parametric studies using the numerical technique as shear-strength reduction technique are carried out. In the parametric study, the thickness of concrete facing walls is changed to identify the effects of the facing wall stiffness.

  • A new type of composite beam which consists of a wide flange steel shape beam and an innovative type of composite slab was introduced. The composite slab is composed of concrete slab and normal flat steel plates, which are connected by perfobond shear connectors (PBL shear connectors). This paper describes experiments of two large-scale specimens of that composite beam. Both specimens were loaded at two symmetric points for 4-point loading status, and mechanical behaviors under hogging and sagging bending moments were investigated respectively. During the experiments, the crack patterns, failure modes, failure mechanism and ultimate bending capacity of composite beam specimens were investigated, and the strains of concrete and flat steel plate as well as steel shapes were measured and recorded. As shown from the experimental results, composite actions were fully developed between the steel shape and the composite slab, this new type of composite beams was found to have good mechanical performance both under hogging and sagging bending moment with high bending capacity, substantial flexure rigidity and good ductility. It was further shown that the plane-section assumption was verified. Moreover, a design procedure including calculation methods of bending capacity of this new type of composite beam was studied and proposed based on the experimental results, and the calculation methods based on the plane-section assumption and plastic theories were also verified by comparisons of the calculated results and experimental results, which were agreed with each other.

  • Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes were used for the automotive, the electrical and the electronic industries and the display module junction. In this study, the manufacture of high-strength structural tape used 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) and acrylic acid (AAC), and UV irradiation for photo-polymerization, and the semi-structural properties of acrylic PSA tape with the AAC content and inorganic filler $SiO_2$ content were investigated. The initial adhesion strength was lowered by the rigidity of molecule chains due to the use of AAC, and the adhesion strength increased with increasing wetting time. The wetability, contact angle, and SEM images of PSA tapes with various contents of AAC were determined. Without filler, the peel strength and dynamic shear strength of PSA tape showed inverse correlation but the peel strength and dynamic shear strength increased with increasing filler content. From these correlations the PSA tapes could be optimized for the applications requiring high performance.

  • Various earth retaining wall methods were used on the domestic construction sites and a cast in place pile (C.I.P) method was mostly applied at deep excavation. Because of a lot of shortcomings in the C.I.P method, a new method using PHC-W earth retaining wall was developed. The earth retaining wall method using PHC-W piles has a lot of advantages including that it is safer than other earth retaining wall methods due to uniform quality and high rigidity. PHC-W was designed to effectively resist lateral earth pressure by alternating cross section of PHC pile. And increment of bending moment and shear strength were verified through KS F 4306 tests, and were increased by 42% and 98% more than KS standards.

  • Modern ultra-large container carriers can be exposed to the unprecedented springing excitation from ocean waves due to their relatively low torsional rigidity. Large deck opening on the deck of container carriers tends to cause warping distortion of hull structure under wave-induced excitation, eventually leading to the higher chance of resonance vibration between its torsional response and incoming waves. To handle this problem, a higher-order B-spline Rankine panel method and Vlasov-beam FE model was directly coupled in the time domain, and the coupled equation was solved by using an implicit iterative method. In order to capture the complicated behavior of thin-walled open section girder, a sophisticated beam-based finite element model was developed, which takes into account warping distortion and shear-on-wall effect. Then, the developed beam model was directly coupled with the time-domain Rankine panel method for hydrodynamic problem by using the fixed-point iteration method. The developed computational scheme was validated through the comparison with the frequency-domain solution on the container carrier model in linear springing regime.

  • In order to investigate the hand values and mechanical properties such as tensile, shearing, bending, compression, surface and thickness & weight of the women's summer fabrics were measured by KES-F system. Sorts of 78 commercial fabrics of women's summer cloth were classfied into 43 silk and 35 polyester fabrics according to materials. The experimental results were analysed statistically to relate the hand values and the mechanical properties and concerning to formation of weared clothes and transformation behavior were investigated. The main results are summarized as follows; 1. Polyester fabrics show higher tensile deformation than those of silk fabric. And also polyster fabric has a easy to shape-less and makes a silhouette which goes along with the body. 2. Silk fabrics is superior to polyester fabrics in formation and shear elasticity building box-shaped silhouette. 3. Polyester fabrics show sufficient ability to recover from tending deformation and drapability On the other hand, the compressibility and bending rigidity of silk fabrics were superior to polyester fabrics. 4. Regardless of materials, the bending properties is closely assocsiated with stiffness, anti-drape stiffness and flexibility with soft feeling. Fullness & softness and crispness is primarily influenced by surface properties. There is substantive relationship between scrooping and sheaing properties.

  • This study investigated garment formability of the 73 breathable fabrics for sports-wear garment and their fabric mechanical properties were measured using KES-FB and FAST systems. Predicted garment formability from the mechanical properties measured using KES-FB and FAST systems was compared and discussed with fabric structural parameters. In addition, virtual 3D simulation silhouette by I-designer CAD system wear appearance by simulation using 3D CAD system. And compared with FAST finger chart by mechanical properties of FAST system. The correlation coefficients of extensibility and shear modulus between KES-FB and FAST systems were high, however, bending rigidity and compressibility showed relatively low correlation coefficients. The correlation coefficient of garment formability of breathable fabrics between KES-FB and FAST systems was 0.82. It revealed that garment formability can be predicted from fabric mechanical properties by KES-FB and FAST systems. The garment formability of nylon breathable fabric was higher than that of PET one, and the garment formability of laminated breathable fabric showed the highest value compared to coated, dot and hot melt laminated breathable fabrics. It revealed that garment formability of breathable fabrics for sports-wear can be predicted from fabric mechanical properties and garment formability was dependent on the materials, finishing method and fabric structural parameters.

  • The nonlinear static analysis of structure, which is under the effect of lateral loads and provides the capacity curve of the structure, is defined as a push-over analysis. Ordinarily, by using base shear and the lateral displacement of target point, the capacity curve is obtained. The speed and ease of results interpretation in this method is more than that of the NRHA responses. In this study, the nonlinear static analysis is applied on the semi-rigid steel gabled frames. It should be noted that the members of this structure are analyzed as a prismatic beam-column element in two states of semi-rigid connections and supports. The gabled frame is modeled in the OpenSees software and analyzed based on the displacement control at the target point. The lateral displacement results, calculated in the top level of columns, are reported. Furthermore, responses of the structure are obtained for various support conditions and the rigidity of nodal connections. Ultimately, the effect of semi-rigid connections and supports on the capacity and the performance point of the structure are presented in separated graphs.

  • The present paper deals with the analysis of combined footings resting on geosynthetic reinforced granular fill overlying stone column improved poor soil. An attempt has been made to study the influence of inclusion of geosynthetic layer on the deflection of the footing. The footing has been idealized as a beam having finite flexural rigidity. Granular fill layer has been represented by Pasternak shear layer and stone columns and poor soil have been represented by nonlinear Winkler springs. Nonlinear behavior of granular fill layer, stone columns and the poor soil has been considered by means of hyperbolic stress strain relationships. Governing differential equations for the soil-foundation system have been derived and solution has been obtained employing finite difference scheme by means of iterative Gauss Elimination method. Results of a detailed parametric study have been presented, for a footing supporting typically five columns, in non-dimensional form in respect of deflection with and without geosynthetic inclusion. Geosynthetic layer has been found to significantly reduce the deflection of the footing which has been quantified by means of parametric study.

  • The present research intends to study the effects of the seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on the dynamic response of various buildings. Two methods including direct and Cone model were studied through 3D finite element method using ABAQUS software. Cone model as an approximate method to consider the SFSI phenomenon was developed and evaluated for both high and low rise buildings. Effect of soil nonlinearity, foundation rigidity and embedment as well as friction coefficient between soil-foundation interfaces during seismic excitation are investigated. Validity and performance of both approaches are evaluated as reference graphs for Cone model and infinite boundary condition, soil nonlinearity and amplification factor for direct method. A series of calculations by DeepSoil for inverse earthquake record modification was conducted. A comparison of the two methods was carried out by root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) tool for maximum lateral displacement and story shear forces which verifies that Cone model results have good agreement with direct method. It was concluded that Cone method is a convenient, fast and rather accurate method as an approximate way to count for soil media.
