  • The rheological behaviors and morphologies of polylactide (PLA) and chemically modified plasticized starch (CMPS) blends were investigated. For this study, oscillatory shear flow measurements of the PLA, CMPS and their blends were performed. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) study was also conducted on the extracted extrudates of the blends. The morphology of the blend changed in relation to the composition: sphere-shaped CMPS disperse/continuous PLA, rod-like deformed CMPS phase/continuous PLA, a co-continuous structure with bridged CMPS long rods and PLA dispersed/continuous CMPS. The composition of the phase inversion could be estimated and closely coincided from the observed morphology experimental results. The rheological behavior of the blends, from oscillatory measurements, was found to vary in relation to the composition, and reflected the morphologies of the blends. PLA showed Newtonian flow behavior, while CMPS showed strong shear thinning behavior. The relationships between the morphology and rheological properties were observed in detail.

  • A highly dispersed W/O emulsion of silicone oil (cyclomethicone)/water system was prepared with a nonionic surfactant. The surface and interfacial tension between the oil and water were characterized in terms of the droplet size distribution and viscosity change of the emulsion. When the dispersed phase concentration was relatively high, the viscosity of the emulsion was rapidly increased and the droplet size of the emulsion was decreased. The rheological behavior of the emulsion system showed non-Newtonian and shear thinning phenomena depending upon the content of the dispersed phase. The droplet size of the emulsion was decreased with increasing surfactant content and water concentration. The relative viscosity of the emulsion was better predicted with the Choi-Schowalter model than with the Taylor model. The value of the complex modulus increased with increasing surfactant concentration. The linear viscoelastic region was expanded with a dispersed phase concentration. According to the change in the viscosity, the behavior was classified into three distinct regions: [I] linear viscoelastic, [II] partially viscoelastic, and [III] viscous. The creep/recovery behaviors in each region were characterized.

  • The hemodynamics behavior of the blood flow is influenced by the presence of the arterial stenosis. If the stenosis is present in an artery, normal blood flow is disturbed. In the present study, the characteristics of pulsatile flow in the blood vessel with stenosis are investigated by the finite volume method. For the validation of numerical model, the computation results are compared with the experimental ones of Ojha et al. in the case of 45% stenosis with a trapezoidal profile. Comparisons between the measured and the computed velocity profiles are favorable to our solutions. Finally, the effects of stenosis severity and wall shear stress are discussed in the present computational analysis. It can be seen, where the non-dimensional peak velocity is displayed for all the stenosis models at a given severity of stenosis, that it is exponentially increased. Although the stenosis and the boundary conditions are all symmetric, the asymmetric flow can be detected in the more than 57% stenosis. The instability by a three-dimensional symmetry-breaking leads to the asymmetric separation and the intense swirling motion downstream of the stenosis.

  • The control of the rheological properties of a fluid during processing is important and can determine the efficiency of the production in addition to the performance of the final product. The vast majority of process fluids are viscoelastic, hence an instrument that measures both the viscous and elastic properties of the material during processing would be of great practical use. However, most in-line instruments commercially available to date are only capable of measuring viscosity at a single shear rate. An in-line rheometer that measures both the viscous and elastic properties of fluids over a wide range of shear rates simultaneously has been described in a previous publication (Glasscock et at., 2003) in which the results of measurements on flowing sunflower oil were presented. Before this instrument can be used in an industrial situation, it must be demonstrated that the generated results are the same as, or bear some fixed relationship to, the results obtained by conventional off-line rheometers. To this end, the present investigation describes the measurements of a standard reference fluid, polyisobutylene dissolved in 2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane, labelled SRM2490 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA. The results obtained using the in-line rheometer show remarkably good correlation for viscosity, using a modified CoxMerz rule, with the results supplied with the reference material from NIST.

  • Clay suspensions in liquid polymers exhibit a time-dependent behaviour that includes viscoelastic as well as thixotropic features. Because of the presence of interacting clay platelets, particulate networks can develop, which are broken down during flow and rebuild upon cessation of the flow. Here, the use of thixotropic techniques in probing flow-induced structures in nanocomposites is explored with data on a hectorite-poly(isobutylene) model system. By means of fast stress jump measurements the hydrodynamic contributions to the steady state stresses are determined as well as those caused by the stretching of the clay floes. Flow reversal measurements do not provide a clear indication of flow-induced anisotropy in the present case. The recovery of the clay microstructure upon cessation of flow is followed by means of overshoot and dynamic measurements. The development of a particulate network is detected by the appearance and growth of a low frequency plateau of the storage moduli. The modulus-frequency curves after various rest times collapse onto universal master curves, regardless of the pre-shear history or temperature. The scaling factors for this master curve are the crossover parameters. The crossover moduli are nearly a linear function of the crossover frequency, the relation being identical for recovery after shearing at different shear rates. This function depends, however, on temperature.

  • We examine the wall contact of a $3\;{\mu}m$ tethered DNA chain's free end under shear with a focus on developing schemes for double-tethering in the application of making scaffolds for molecular wires. At this scale our results are found to be highly dependent on small length scale rigidity. Chain-end-wall contact frequency, mean fractional extension deficit upon contact, and standard deviation in extension upon contact are examined for scaling with dimensionless flow strength, Wi. Predictions made using a one dimensional approximation to the Smoluchowski equation for a dumbbell and three dimensional dumbbell simulations produce extension deficit, standard deviation, and frequency scaling exponents of -1/3, -1/3, and 2/3, respectively whereas more fine-grained Kratky-Porod (KP) simulations produce scaling exponents of -0.48, -0.42, and 0.76. The contact frequency scaling of 2/3 is derived from the known results regarding cyclic dynamics Analytical scaling predictions are in agreement with those previously proposed for ${\lambda}-DNA$. [Ladoux and Doyle, 2000, Doyle et al., 2000]. Our results suggest that the differences between the dumbbell and the KP model are associated with the addition of chain discretization and the correct bending potential in the latter. These scaling results will aide future exploration in double tethering of DNA to a surface.

  • Oil was extracted from cashew nuts. The physicochemical parameters of the oil were determined. A chromatographic assay of the oil was carried out using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Seventeen compounds were detected: Phenol, Phenol 2-methyl-, Cyclohexene 4, 4-dimethyl-, m-Fluoro-2-diazoacetophenone 4-dimethyl-, Tetradecanoic acid, Phenol 4-octyl-, n-Hexadecanoic acid. Others are 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, Methyl stearate, Dodecanoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid (Z, Z, Z)-, Oleic acid, Octadecanoic acid, Tetracosanoic acid and 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester. Among the components are omega three and omega six essential free fatty acids. The rheological profiling and flow properties of cashew nut oil were determined using a Programmable Rheometer. Cashew nut oil exhibits slight dilatant behaviour at the low end of shear rate. The long chain and high molecular weight of its constituents controlled its rheology. Long-chained 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Tetracosanoic acid and methyl stearate, coupled with their high molecular weights are responsible for the shear thickening effect observed. Two models, Carreau-Yasuda and Ostwald-de Waele Power Law were employed to fit the rheological data. The Carreau-Yasuda model followed well the data.

  • In various attempts to relate the behaviour of highly-elastic liquids in complex flows to their rheometrical behaviour, obvious candidates for study have been the variation of shear viscosity with shear rate, the two normal stress differences $N_1$ and $N_2$, especially $N_1$, and the extensional viscosity $\eta_E$. In this paper, we shall be mainly interested in 'constant-viscosity' Boger fluids, and, accordingly, we shall limit attention to $N_1$ and $\eta_E$. We shall concentrate on two important flows - axisymmetric contraction flow and "splashing" (particularly that which arises when a liquid drop falls onto the tree surface of the same liquid). Modern numerical techniques are employed to provide the theoretical predictions. It is shown that the two obvious manifestations of viscoelastic rheometrical behaviour can sometimes be opposing influences in determining flow characteristics. Specifically, in an axisymmetric contraction flow, high $\eta_E$ can retard the flow, whereas high $N_1$ can have the opposite effect. In the splashing experiment, high $\eta_E$ can certainly reduce the height of the so-called Worthington jet, thus confirming some early suggestions, but, again, other rheometrical influences can also have a role to play and the overall picture may not be as clear as it was once envisaged.
