We examine rigorous computations on microstructural as well as rheological properties of concentrated dispersions of bidisperse colloids. The NVT Monte Carlo simulation is applied to obtain the radial distribution function for the concentrated system. The long-range electrostatic interactions between dissimilar spherical colloids are determined using the singularity method, which provides explicit solutions to the linearized electrostatic field. The increasing trend of osmotic pressure with increasing total particle concentration is reduced as the concentration ratio between large and small particles is increased. From the estimation of total structure factor, we observe the strong correlations developed between dissimilar spheres. As the particle concentration increases at a given ionic strength, the magnitude of the first peak in structure factors increases and also moves to higher wave number values. The increase of electrostatic interaction between same charged particles caused by the Debye screening effect provides an increase in both the osmotic pressure and the shear modulus. The higher volume fraction ratio providing larger interparticle spacing yields decreasing high frequency limit of the shear modulus, due to decreasing the particle interaction energy.
In the present study, the characteristics of blood flow inside a carotid artery numerically investigated with shear rate specific blood viscosity. To simulate the blood flow with a patient-specific arterial geometry, the geometry of a carotid artery was constructed from 2D rain MRA data. The measured data of blood flow velocity at the common carotid artery were used as boundary conditions of the simulation. For the blood rheology data to be used in the simulation, the patient specific blood viscosity over the whole ranges of shear rate was obtained using $BioVisco^{TM}$. From the numerical results of the blood flow in the carotid artery, the increase of blood viscosity and the decrease of wall shear stress could be found in the carotid bifurcated region, more specifically at the post-plaque dilated region. These characteristics of blood viscosity and wall shear stress can be used more precisely and efficiently to predict the region vulnerable to plaque growht or thrombosis on top of the plaque.
In the previous paper (Hyun et al.,2002), we have investigated the shape of storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") of complex fluids under large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) flow. As the strain amplitude increases, owever, the stress curve becomes distorted and some important information may be smothered during data processing. Thus we need to investigate the stress data more precisely and systematically. In this work, we have obtained the stress data using high performance ADC (analog digital converting) card, and investigated the nonlinear response of complex fluids, 4wt% xanthan gum (XG), 2 wt% PVA/ 1 wt% Borax, and 1 wt% hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions, using Fourier transformation (FT) rheology. Comparing the strain signals in time domain with FT parameters in frequency domain, we could illustrate the sensitivity and importance of FT rheology. Diverse and unique stress patterns were observed depending on the material system as well as flow environment. It was found that they are not the outcome of experimental deficiency like wall slip but characteristics of the material system. When nonlinear response of complex fluids is analyzed, the intensity and phase angle of higher harmonic contributions should be considered together, and the shape of the stress signal was found to be strongly dependent upon phase angle.ngle.
A stress jump, defined as the instantaneous gain or loss of stress on startup or cessation of a deformation, has been predicted by various models and has relatively recently been experimentally observed. In 1993, Liang and Mackay measured shear stress jump data of xanthan gum solutions, and in 1996, Orr and Sridhar reported extensional stress jump data of Boger fluids. Shear stress jumps of suspensions and liquid crystal polymers have also been observed. In this contribution, experimental work as well as a variety of theoretical models, which are able to predict a stress jump, are reviewed.
The polydiacethylene (PDA) is known to change its color by mechanical shear. The shear-induced color transition has been reported with elastomer or film type of PDA. In this paper, we newly investigated the transition with liposome type of PDAs in polymeric solutions. The liposomes were dispersed in Poly(vinyl alcohol) 2% + Sodium borate 1%, Poly(vinyl alcohol) 15% and Hyaluronic acid 1% (PVA/B, PVA, HA). The shear stress was continuously imposed to each solution by stress control type rheometer with coni-cylinder fixture. The degree of color transition was quantified with the characteristic absorbance peak at 540 nm (blue) and 640 nm (red). As a result, PDA liposome in PVA/B solution changed the color from blue to red upon increasing the magnitude of shear (from 0 to 100 Pa) and the duration of shear-imposed time (from 0 to 5400 sec). Meanwhile, PDA liposome in HA or PVA solution did not noticeably change the color, even though the low shear viscosities of the solutions were kept almost constant. This color transition of PDA liposome is expected to measure the magnitude of shear, and to distinguish different responses of polymeric solutions to the applied shear.
Rheological Properties of polypropylenes having different molecular structures (linear polypropylene (PPL) and branched one (PPB)) were studied. Both the extensional flow and oscillatory shear flow properties were checked. Especially, the melt strength of polypropylenes having various shear history were investigated by using in-house-made Rheometer (called SMER). Compared to linear polypropylene, the branched polypropylene shows enhanced melt strength during extensional flow due to the retarded relaxation of molecules. When the slope of melt tension was plotted against take up speed of melt strand, the characteristic peak was observed in case of branched polypropylene, while the linear polypropylene shows only monotonously decreasing pattern. This entanglement was partially disrupted by physical forces such as shear during melt extrusion. However, the melt strength of PPB after multiple extrusion is still higher than PPL, implying the loss of elasticity during multiple extrusion is not so comprehensive. On dynamic experiments, PPB shows typical shear thinning behavior and the tangent delta of PPB is lower than PPL, reflecting high elasticity of PPB.
High internal phase emulsions are highly concentrated emulsion systems consisting of a large volume of dispersed phase above 0.74. The rheological properties of high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions were measured conducting steady shear, oscillatory shear and creep/recovery experiments. It was found that the yield stress is inversely proportional to the drop size with the exponent of values between 1 and 2. Since the oil phase contains monomeric species, microcellular foams can easily be prepared from high internal phase emulsions. In this study, the microcellular foams combining a couple of thickeners into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were investigated to understand the effect of viscosity ratio on cell size. Cell size variation on thickener concentration could be explained by a dimensional analysis between the capillary number and the viscosity ratio. Compression properties of foam are important end use properties in many practical applications. Crush strength and Young's modulus of microcellular foams polymerized from high internal phase emulsions were measured and compared from compression tests. Of the foams tested in this study, the foam prepared from the organoclay having reactive group as an oil phase thickener showed outstanding compression properties.
