  • There are many theoretical models and proposed equations for shear strength of reinforced concrete(RC) members. Because shear behavior is very complicated due to many influencing parameters, many equations have been empirically formulated and provide very different level of accuracy. ANN, therefore, have been studied by some researchers, as an alternative approach to solve this problem. In previous research, however, the number of data used in ANN analysis often were not sufficient enough to give reliable results. In this study, a database were established, containing a large number of shear test results on RC beams without transverse reinforcement, which was used for ANN analysis. The prediction results by ANN analysis were also compared with ACI 318 shear provision. The result indicates that ANN provides very good level of accuracy in the prediction of RC shear strength with a proper consideration on the effect of primary influencing parameters.

  • Advanced material models for concrete are not widely available in general purpose finite element codes. Parameters to define them complicate the implementation because they are case sensitive. In addition to this, their validity under severe shear condition has not been verified. In this article, simple engineering plasticity material models available in a commercial finite element code are used to demonstrate that complicated shear behavior can be calculated with reasonable accuracy. For this purpose dynamic response of a squat shear wall that had been tested on a shaking table as part of an experimental program conducted in Japan is analyzed. Both the finite element and material aspects of the modeling are examined. A corrective artifice for general engineering plasticity models to account for shear effects in concrete is developed. The results of modifications in modeling the concrete in compression are evaluated and compared with experimental response quantities.

  • Shear connections in steel structures should satisfy dual criteria of shear strength and rotational flexibility and ductility. The connection should be strong enough to transfer the shear reaction of the beam, and should have sufficient rotational flexibility and ductility to rotate easily and supply the end rotation demand of the beam. This paper is concerned with the behavior of double-angle shear connections where the parameters are numbers of high strength bolts, bolt pitch, the length of angle leg, and connection method. An experimental investigation of shear connection was conducted by testing 12 beam-to-column joint specimens. Based on experimental and analytical study, the failure modes are developed and proposed design formulas.

  • The shear behavior of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams subject to concentrated loads has been scrutinized experimentally to verify the influence of the structural parameters such as shear span ratio, and the horizontal and vertical web reinforcements. A total of 27 specimens has been tested at the laboratory. In the tests all specimens have failed in shear causing inclined cracks from the load application points to the supports. The load bearing capacities have changed significantly depending on the shear span ratio. The effects of the vertical and horizontal reinforcements on the shear strength and crack initiation and propagation have been carefully checked and analyzed.

  • This is the first of two part series on experimental studies of grout type transverse joints. In this study, grout type transverse joints between precast concrete slabs are statically tested to determine the cracking loads and ultimate shear capacities of the grout type transverse joints. The tests are performed with a loading equipment designed and constructed especially in the lab to induce shear failures on the joints of the test specimens. Shape of the transverse joints, grouting materials and amount of prestress are selected as test parameters for the study. The results indicate that epoxy is an excellent grouting material which can be used in limited locations where large tensile stress is acting on the slab. Longitudinal prestressing is also an effective method to increase the shear strength of the transverse joints. A rational method to estimate the cracking and ultimate loads for the design of grout type transverse joints is proposed based on the static loading tests. Success of the tests with shear loading equipment allowed continuing the research further onto the fatigue strength of the grout type joints, which will be presented in the second part of the paper.

  • In this study, specimens were made with profile thicknesses and shear reinforcement as parameters. The bending and shear behavior were checked, and comparative analysis was conducted of the results and the theoretical values in order to see the applicability of T-section Modular Composite Profiled Beams (TMPB). In TMPB, the profiles of formwork functions play a structural role resisting the load. Also, the module concept, which is introduced into TMPB, has advantages: it can be mass-produced in a factory, it is lighter than an existing H-beam, it can be fabricated on the spot, and its section size is freely adjustable. The T1 specimens exhibited ductile behavior, where the whole section displayed strain corresponding to yielding strain at least without separation between modules. They also exhibited maximum strength similar to the theoretical values even if shear reinforcement was not applied, due to the marginal difference between shear strength and maximum bending monment of the concrete section. A slip between modules was incurred by shear failure of the bolts in all specimens, excluding the T1 specimen, and therefore bending moment could not be fully displayed.

  • Two hyperbolic displacement models are used for the bending response of simply-supported orthotropic laminated composite plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations under mechanical loading. The models contain hyperbolic expressions to account for the parabolic distributions of transverse shear stresses and to satisfy the zero shear-stress conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the plates. The present theory takes into account not only the transverse shear strains, but also their parabolic variation across the plate thickness and requires no shear correction coefficients in computing the shear stresses. The governing equations are derived and their closed-form solutions are obtained. The accuracy of the models presented is demonstrated by comparing the results obtained with solutions of other theories models given in the literature. It is found that the theories proposed can predict the bending analysis of cross-ply laminated composite plates resting on elastic foundations rather accurately. The effects of Winkler and Pasternak foundation parameters, transverse shear deformations, plate aspect ratio, and side-to-thickness ratio on deflections and stresses are investigated.

  • Behaviour of soil nailed walls in Korea has been analysed based on a number of field measurements. The investigation has included interface shear strength development at the nail-soil interface from pull-out tests, lateral ground displacements, tensile force distributions along soil nails and mobilised interface shear stress distributions. Insights into the soil nailed wall behaviour based on the shear transfer mechanism at the soil-nail interface and partial mobilisations of the interface shear strength, governed by relative shear displacement, are reported and discussed. It is expected that results from the current research can provide relevant parameters required for preliminary design of soil nailed walls in Korea.

  • The major objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the shear strengthening effect of carbon fiber sheets upon reinforced concrete deep beam and shear failure behavior variation of reinforced concrete deep beam strengthened by carbon fiber sheets. Tests are carried out with 6 specimens were shear failure at first loading tests, and with parameters including the types of shear strengthening of carbon fiber sheets (I type, S type, U type), and plies of sheets (2 ply and 1 ply). From the results of test, analyzed load-deflection of midspan, strain variation of main bars and transverse reinforcement, maximum load capacity of strengthened specimens, and compared with the previous test results.

  • Since behaviors of loose, dense, silty sands vary under seismic loading, understanding the liquefaction mechanism of sandy soils continues to be an important challenges of geotechnical earthquake engineering. In this study, 36 deformation controlled cyclic simple shear tests were performed and the liquefaction potential of the sands was investigated using three different relative densities (40, 55, 70%), four different effective stresses (25, 50, 100, 150 kPa) and three different shear strain amplitudes (2, 3.5, 5%) by using energy based approach. Experiments revealed the relationship between per unit volume dissipated energy with effective stress, relative density and shear strain. The dissipate energy per unit volume was much less affected by shear strain than effective stress and relative density. In other words, the dissipated energy is strongly dependent on relative density and effective stress. These results show that the dissipated energy per unit volume is very useful and may contain the non-uniform loading conditions of the earthquake spectrum. When multiple regression analysis is performed on experiment results, a relationship is proposed that gives liquefaction energy of sandy soils depending on relative density and effective stress parameters.
