Numerical Calculations for dimensionless pressure drop (friction factor times Reynolds number) have been obtained for fully developed laminar flow of MPL(Modified Power Law) fluid in isosceles triangle pipes. The solutions are valid for Pseudoplastic fluids over a wide range from Newtonian behavior at low shear rates through transition region to power law behavior at higher shear rates. The analysis identified a dimensionless shear rate parameter which for a given set of operating conditions specifies where in the shear rate range a particular system is operating, i.e., Newtonian, transition or power law region. The numerical calculation data of the dimensionless pressure drop for the Newtonian and power law regions are compared with previously published asymptotic results presenting within 0.16 % in Newtonian region and 2.98 % in power law region.

The percentage of a mountainous district in our country is comparatively high but the concern for rock mass has been disregarded for a long time. Especially for rock slope, the most important factors are geometric characteristics and their shear strength parameter. In this paper, parametric studies are performed using the distinct element computer program UDEC-BB for rock slopes. Parameters adopted in this paper are joint angle, spacing, persistence, aperture and shear strength parameters (JRC, JCS, basic friction angle). To estimate slope stability, shear strength reduction method is used. The most important factors affecting rock slope stability are joint angle and spacing. The relationship between average displacement calculated by UDEC-BB and safe factor by shear strength reduction method is researched.
As a type of bolt with a spherical head, the ball stud is widely used as a part of a ball joint in steering or suspension systems in automobiles. Balls and studs are subjected to heat treatment suitable for each material; in particular, the shear strength of the ball stud must meet the specifications of the production company. This study evaluated the shear strength of joints according to the cooling method of ball studs subject to resistance welding. The shear stress of water cooling was higher than that of air cooling (as-received material). Note, however, th at oil cooling showed lower stress than that of as-received. When judged by standard deviation, mean, and coefficient of variation according to the arithmetic statistics and shape parameter as well as scale parameter, oil cooling is suitable.
Multi-stage shear test has been performed using joint specimens of gneiss, granite and shale to investigate the influence of micro-scale asperity change on the shear strength of joint plane. For each shear test asperity degradation characteristics of joint specimens of different joint surface strength have been analyzed by utilizing the optimum asperity parameter which can reflect the sequential asperity degradation. Elevation of joint surface profile has been measured and both the changes of asperity parameters and micro-scale asperity distribution have been investigated. Two distinctive variation modes of cohesion and friction angle have been delineated and major cause of shear strength parameter change has been analyzed by considering the micro-scale asperity angle change resulting from the abrasion, fracturing and regeneration of micro-scale asperities. Effects of micro-scale asperity variation on the joint shear strength have been also investigated.
Reinforced concrete (RC) joint shear strength models are constructed using an experimental database in conjunction with a Bayesian parameter estimation method. The experimental database consists of RC beam-column connection test subassemblies that maintained proper confinement within the joint panel. All included test subassemblies were subjected to quasi-static cyclic lateral loading and eventually experienced joint shear failure (either in conjunction with or without yielding of beam reinforcement); subassemblies with out-of-plane members and/or eccentricity between the beam(s) and the column are not included in this study. Three types of joint shear strength models are developed. The first model considers all possible influence parameters on joint shear strength. The second model contains those parameters left after a step-wise process that systematically identifies and removes the least important parameters affecting RC joint shear strength. The third model simplifies the second model for convenient application in practical design. All three models are unbiased and show similar levels of scatter. Finally, the improved performance of the simplified model for design is identified by comparison with the current ACI 352R-02 RC joint shear strength model.
It is extremely important to obtain rock strength parameters for geological engineering. In this paper, the evolution of sandstone cohesion and internal friction angle with plastic shear strain was obtained by simulating the cyclic loading and unloading tests under different confining pressures using Particle Flow Code software. By which and combined with the micro-crack propagation process, the mesoscopic mechanism of parameter evolution was studied. The results show that with the increase of plastic shear strain, the sandstone cohesion decreases first and then tends to be stable, while the internal friction angle increases first, then decreases, and finally maintains unchanged. The evolution of sandstone shear strength parameters is closely related to the whole process of crack formation, propagation and coalescence. When the internal micro-cracks are less and distributed randomly and dispersedly, and the rock shear strength parameters (cohesion, internal friction angle) are considered to have not been fully mobilized. As the directional development of the internal micro-fractures as well as the gradual formation of macroscopic shear plane, the rock cohesion reduces continuously and the internal friction angle is in the rise stage. As the formation of the macroscopic shear plane, both the rock cohesion and internal friction angle continuously decrease to a certain residual level.
For rock materials, a transversely isotropic failure criterion established through the extended Lade-Duncan failure criterion incorporating an anisotropic state scalar parameter, which is a joint invariant of deviatoric microstructure fabric tensor and normalized deviatoric stress tensor, is verified with the results of triaxial compressive data on Tournemire shale. For torsional shear mode with $0{\leq}b{\leq}0.75$, rock shear strengths decrease with ${\alpha}$ increasing until the rock shear strength approaches minimum value at ${\alpha}{\approx}40^{\circ}$, and after this point, the rock shear strengths increase as ${\alpha}$ increases further. For the torsional shear mode with b > 0.75, rock shear strengths are almost constant for ${\alpha}{\leq}40^{\circ}$, but it increases with increase in ${\alpha}$ afterwards. The rock shear strength variation against ${\alpha}$ agrees with shear strength changing tendency of heavily OCR natural London Clays tested before. Prediction results show that the transversely isotropic failure criterion proposed in the paper is reasonable.
A new finite shear wall element model and a method for calculation of 3D multi-storied only shear walled or shear walled - framed structures using finite shear wall elements assumed ideal elasto - plastic material are developed. The collapse load of the system subjected to factored constant gravity loads and proportionally increasing lateral loads is calculated with a method of load increments. The shape functions over the element are determined as a cubic variation along the story height and a linear variation in horizontal direction because of the rigid behavior of the floor slab. In case shear walls are chosen as only one element in every floor, correct solutions are obtained by using this developed element. Because of the rigid behavior of the floor slabs, the number of unknowns are reduced substantially. While in framed structures, classical plastic hinge hypothesis is used, in nodes of shear wall elements when vertical deformation parameter is exceeded ${\varepsilon}_e$, this node is accepted as a plastic node. While the system is calculated with matrix displacement method, for determination of collapse safety, plastic displacements and plastic deformations are taken as additional unknowns. Rows and columns are added to the system stiffness matrix for additional unknowns.

Corrugated steel webs resist only shear force because of the accordion effects. The shear force in the web can cause three different buckling mode: local, global, and interactive shear buckling modes. The shear behavior of the corrugated steel webs have been investigated by several researchers. However, shear buckling behavior of the corrugated webs are not clearly explained yet. And, it lead the conservative design. This paper presents shear strength of trapezoidally corrugated steel webs. A series of the tests were also conducted to verified proposed shear strength. Firstly, local, global, and interactive shear buckling equations provided by previous researchers were rearranged as a simple form considering the profiles of the existing bridges with corrugated steel webs. And, global and interactive shear buckling coefficient, and shear buckling parameter for corrugated webs were suggested in this study. Inelastic buckling strength can be determined from buckling curves based on the proposed shear buckling parameter. From the test results of this study and those of previous researchers, it can be found that suggested shear strength provides good estimation of those of trapezoidally corrugated steel webs.
This paper introduces the surface roughness parameter, Rs to the characterization of joint roughness and quantitatively illustrates the influence of joint roughness on the joint shear strength. A new peak shear strength criterion for rock joints using Rs is suggested. The results show that the surface roughness parameter, Rs can appropriately reflect the degree of roughness for the rock joint surfaces tested in this study A measuring interval of 2mm and profile length of 5cm can be used to characterize the joint roughness of the rock core size surfaces; however, the scale of fluctuation, $\delta_\alpha$ should be considered to extend the surface roughness parameter, Rs to the large-scale field rock joint surfaces. For the smooth joint roughness, sliding of the rock cores is the principal shear mechanism; however, the breakage of roughness from the rock cores is inferred for rougher joint roughness.
