  • The most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. The study has been aimed to find the desired cut by the examining the piezoelectric properties. Theory predicts that a mixed P/S mode transducer can be constructed using a related Z-cut of a PZT ceramics. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and chocking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation.   • The brake squeal propensity due to the friction-velocity curve is numerically investigated. The finite element models for the disc and pad are correlated with the modal test. In the friction-engaged system modeling, the friction function is linearized at the equilibrium. The damping term induced by friction-velocity slope is incorporated into the equations of motion. In the complex eigenvalue analysis, it is found that the pad shear mode is very sensitive to the friction curve. The results shows that the squeal propensity of the pad shear mode can be controlled by the design parameters such as pressure and stiffness.

Buckling Characteristics of the KALIMER-150 Reactor Vessel Under Lateral Seismic Loads and the Experimental Verification Using Reduced Scale Cylindrical Shell Structures

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling characteristics of a conceptually designed KALIMER-150(Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor, 150MWe) reactor vessel and verify the buckling behavior using the reduced scale cylindrical shell structures. To do this, nonlinear buckling analyses using finite element method and evaluation formulae are carried out. From the results, the KALIMER-150 reactor vessel exhibits a dominant bending buckling mode and is significantly affected by the plastic behavior. The interaction effects with the vertical seismic load cause the lateral buckling load to be slightly decrease. From the results of the buckling experiments using reduced scaled cylindrical shell structures, it is verified that the buckling modes such as pure bending, pure shear, and mixed(bending plus shear) mode clearly appear under a lateral load corresponding to the slenderness ratio of cylinder.

An efficient Galerkin meshfree analysis of shear deformable cylindrical panels

  • A Galerkin meshfree method is presented for analyzing shear deformable cylindrical panels. Based upon the analogy between the cylindrical panel and the curved beam a pure bending mode for cylindrical panel is rationally constructed. The meshfree approximation employed herein is characterized by an enhanced moving least square or reproducing kernel basis function that can exactly represent the pure bending mode and thus meets the requirement of Kirchhoff mode reproducing condition. The variational form is discretized using the efficient stabilized conforming nodal integration with a smoothed nodal gradient based curvature. The resulting meshfree formulation satisfies the integration constraint for bending exactness. Moreover, it is shown here that the smoothed gradient preserves several desired properties which are valid for the standard gradient obtained by direct differentiation, such as partition of nullity and reproduction of a constant strain field. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two benchmark cylindrical panel examples.

p-Version Finite Element Model of Cracked Plates Including Shear Deformation under Flexural Behavior (휨거동을 받는 균열판의 전단변형을 고려한 p-Version 유한요소모델)

  • The new p-version crack model is proposed to estimate the bending stress intensity factors of the thick cracked plate under flexure. The proposed model is based on high order theory and $C^{\circ}$-plate element including shear deformation. The displacements fields are defined by integrals of Legerdre polynomials which can be classified into three groups such as basic mode, side mode and internal mode. The computer implementation allows arbitrary variations of p-level up to a maximum value of 10. The bending stress intensity factors are computed by virtual crack extention approach. The effects of ratios of thickness to crack length(h/a), crack length to width(a/W) and boundary conditions are investigated. Very good agreement with the existing solution in the literature are shown for the uncracked plate as well as the cracked plate.

On the Effective Shear Rigidity in Ship Vibration Analysis (선체진동해석(船體振動解析)에 있어서의 유효전단강성도(有效剪斷剛性度))

  • For the analysis of vertical vibrations of a ship's hull, the Timoshenko beam analogy is accepted up to seven or eight-node modes provided that the system parameters are properly calculated. As to the shear coefficient, it has been a common practice to apply the strain energy method or the projected area method. The theoretical objection to the former is that it ignores lateral contraction due to Poisson's ratio, and the latter is of extreme simplifications. Recently, Cowper's and Stephen's shear coefficient formulas have drawn ship vibration analysts' attentions because these formulas, derivation of which are based on an integrations of the equations of three-dimensional elasticity, take Poisson's ratio into account. Providing computer programs for calculation of the shear coefficient of ship sections modeled as thin-walked multicell sections by each of the forementioned methods, the authors calculated natural vibration characteristics of a bulk carrier and of a container ship by the transfer matrix method using shear coefficients obtained by each of the methods, and discussed the results in comparision. The major conclusions resulted from this investigation are as follows: (1) The shear coefficients taking account of the effects of Poisson's ratio, Cowper's $K_c$ and Stephen's $K_s$, result in higher values of about 10% in maximum as compared with the shear coefficient $K_o$ based on the conventional strain energy methods; (a) $K_c/K_o{\cong}1.05\;and\;K_s/K_o{\cong}1.10$ for ships having single skin side-shell such as a bulk carrier. (b) $K_c/K_o{\cong}1.02\;and\;K_s/K_o{\cong}1.05$ for ships having longitudinally through bulkheads and/or double side-shells in the portion of the cargo hod such as a container carrier. (2) The distributions of the effective shear area along the ship's hull based on each of $K_o,\;K_c\;and\;K_s$ are similar each another except the both end portions. (3) Natural frequencies and mode shapes of the hull based on each of $K_c\;and\;K_s$ are of small differences as compared each other. (4) In cases of using $K_c\;or\;K_s$ in ship vibration analysis, it is also desirable to have the bending rigidity be corrected according to the effective breadth concept. And then, natural frequencies and mode shapes calculated with the bending rigidity corrected in the above and with each of $K_o,\;K_c\;and\;K_s$ result in small differences as compared each another. (5) Referring to those mentioned in the above (3) and (4) and to the full-scale experimental results reported by Asmussen et al.[17], and considering laboursome to prepare the computer input data, the following suggestions can safely be made; (a) Use of $K_o$ in ship vibration analysis is appropriate in practical senses. (b) Use of $K_c$ is appropriate even for detailed vibration analysis of a ship's hull. (6) The effective shear area based on the projected area method is acceptable for the two-node mode.

  • Results are presented of the cyclic loading tests of there low-rise shear wall assembligies using high strength concrete. The possibilities of achieving an acceptable level of energy dissipation in one story shear walls, mainly by flexural yielding, are examined. Mechanisms of flexural and shear resistance are reviewed with emphasis on aspects of sliding shear. Detrimental effects of sliding shear are demonstrated together with improvement achieved by use of diagonal wall reinforcements. It is postulated that with suitably arranged diagonal wall reinforcements a predominantly flexural response mode with good energy dissipation characteristics can be achieved in low-rise shear walls.

Ultimate and fatigue response of shear dominated full-scale pretensioned concrete box girders

  • Two full-scale, precast, pretensioned box girders were subjected to shear-dominated loading, one under monotonic loads to failure and the other subjected to one-half million cycles of fatigue loads followed by monotonic ultimate loads. The number of cycles was selected to allow for comparison with previous research. The fatigue loads were applied in combination with occasional overloads. In the present study, fatigue loading reduced the shear capacity by only six percent compared to the capacity under monotonic loading. However, previous research on flexure-dominated girders subjected to the same number of repeated loads showed that fatigue loading changed the mode of failure from flexure to shear/flexure and the girder capacity dropped by 14 percent. The comparison of the measured data with calculated shear capacity from five different theoretical methods showed that the ACI code method, the compression field theory, and the modified compression field theory led to reasonable estimates of the shear strength. The truss model led to an overly conservative estimate of the capacity.

Shear Performance of Glass Fiber Reinforced Glulam Bolted Connection

  • To evaluate the shear performance of the textile glass fiber and the sheet glass fiber reinforced glulam bolted connections, a tension type shear test was conducted. The average yield shear strength of the bolted connection of reinforced glulam was increased by 12% ~ 31% compared to the non-reinforced glulam. It was confirmed that the shear performance of 5D end distance of the glass fiber reinforced glulam connection corresponds to that of 7D of the non-reinforced glulam connection proposed in building design requirements in various countries. Compared to the non-reinforced glulam, the average shear strength of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam was markedly increased. The non-reinforced glulam and the GFRP reinforced glulam underwent a momentary splitting fracture. However, the failure mode of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam showed a good ductility.

Shear strength of full-scale steel fibre-reinforced concrete beams without stirrups

  • Although shear reinforcement in beams typically consists of steel bars bent in the form of stirrups or hoops, the addition of deformed steel fibres to the concrete has been shown to enhance shear resistance and ductility in reinforced concrete beams. This paper presents a model that can be used to predict the shear strength of fibrous concrete rectangular members without stirrups. The model is an extension of the plasticity-based crack sliding model originally developed for plain concrete beams. The crack sliding model has been improved in order to take into account several aspects: the arch effect for deep beams, the post-cracking tensile strength of steel fibre reinforced concrete and its ability to control sliding along shear cracks, and the mitigation of the shear size effect due to presence of fibres. The results obtained by the model have been validated by a large set of experimental tests taken from literature, compared with several models proposed in literature, and numerical analyses are carried out showing the influence of fibres on the beam failure mode.
