Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test(τ/σ= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio τ/σ. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.

In this work, the effect of chemical treatments on surface properties of SiC was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of the SiC were determined by acid/base values and contact angles. The thermal stabilities of carbon fibers-reinforced composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also, the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical strain energy release rate mode II $(G_{IIC})$ measurements. As a result, tile acidically treated SiC (A-SiC) had higher acid value than that of untreated SiC (V-SiC) or basically treated SiC (B-SiC). According to the contact angle measurements, it was observed that chemical treatments led to an increase of surface free energy of the SiC surfaces, mainly due to the increase of the specific (polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $(G_{IIC})$, had been improved in the specimens treated by chemical solutions. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between SiC and epoxy resin matrix.

This paper presents the details of a novel external prestressing technique for strengthening of concrete members. In the proposed technique, transfer of external force is in shear mode on the end block thus creating a complex stress distribution and the required transverse prestressing force is lesser compared to conventional techniques. Steel brackets are provided on either side of the end block for transferring external prestressing force and these are connected to the anchor blocks by expansion type anchor bolts. In order to validate the technique, an experimental investigation has been carried out on post-tensioned end blocks. Performance of the end blocks have been studied for design, cracking and ultimate loads. Slip and slope of steel bracket have been recorded at various stages during the experiment. Finite element analysis has been carried out by simulating the test conditions and the responses have been compared. From the analysis, it has been observed that the computed slope and slip of the steel bracket are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. A simplified analytical model has been proposed to compute load-deformation of the loaded steel bracket with respect to the end block. Yield and ultimate loads have been arrived at based on force/moment equilibrium equations at critical sections. Deformation analysis has been carried out based on the assumption that the ratio of axial deformation to vertical deformation of anchor bolt would follow the same ratio at the corresponding forces such as yield and ultimate. It is observed that the computed forces, slip and slopes are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations.
This paper presents an experimental study of three two-dimensional (2D/planar) steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped column-RC beam hybrid joints and six 3D SRC T-shaped column-steel beam hybrid joints under low cyclic reversed loads. Considering different categories of steel configuration types in column cross section and horizontal loading angles for the specimens were selected, and a reliable structural testing system for the spatial loading was employed in the tests. The load-displacement curves, carrying capacity, energy dissipation capacity, ductility and deformation characteristics of the test subassemblies were analyzed. Especially, the seismic performance discrepancies between planar hybrid joints and 3D hybrid joints were intensively compared. The failure modes for planar loading and spatial loading observed in the tests showed that the shear-diagonal compressive failure was the dominating failure mode for all the specimens. In addition, the 3D hybrid joints illustrated plumper hysteretic loops for the columns configured with solid-web steel, but a little more pinched hysteretic loops for the columns configured with T-shaped steel or channel-shaped steel, better energy dissipation capacity & ductility, and larger interlayer deformation capacity than those of the planar hybrid joints. Furthermore, it was revealed that the hysteretic loops for the specimens under $45^{\circ}$ loading angle are generally plumper than those for the specimens under $30^{\circ}$ loading angle. Finally, the effects of steel configuration type and loading angle on the seismic damage for the specimens were analyzed by means of the Park-Ang model.
The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beams on elastic soil is plenty, but the free vibration analysis of Reddy-Bickford beams on elastic soil with/without axial force effect using the Differential Transform Method (DTM) has not been investigated by any of the studies in open literature so far. In this study, the free vibration analysis of axially loaded Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil is carried out by using DTM. The model has six degrees of freedom at the two ends, one transverse displacement and two rotations, and the end forces are a shear force and two end moments in this study. The governing differential equations of motion of the rectangular beam in free vibration are derived using Hamilton's principle and considering rotatory inertia. Parameters for the relative stiffness, stiffness ratio and nondimensionalized multiplication factor for the axial compressive force are incorporated into the equations of motion in order to investigate their effects on the natural frequencies. At first, the terms are found directly from the analytical solutions of the differential equations that describe the deformations of the cross-section according to the high-order theory. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the governing differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of one end fixed and the other end simply supported Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil using DTM are tabulated in several tables and figures and are compared with the results of the analytical solution where a very good agreement is observed and the mode shapes are presented in graphs.
Wing and secondary cracks are unique types of cracks observed in rock masses subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loading conditions. In this study, morphological features of wing and secondary cracks developed in gypsum specimens are investigated in the macro and micro scales. Along the path of wing crack, microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks coalesce with pores and show branch phenomenon. From the onset of the wing crack, multiple initiations of microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks show tortuous propagation paths and relatively constant aperture of the cracks during the propagation. It is shown that microtensile cracks propagate by splitting failure. At the micro scale, microfsults are observed in the path of the secondary cracks. Along the path of the secondary cracks, separation of grains and conglomerate grains, oblique microfaults, and irregular aperture of microfault are observed. These features show that the secondary cracks are produced in shear mode. The measured sizes of fracture process zone across the propagation direction near the tip of wing and secondary cracks range from 10$\mu{m}$ to 20$\mu{m}$ far wing cracks and from 100$\mu{m}$ to 200$\mu{m}$ for secondary cracks, respectively.
Model tests were performed to investigate the mechanism of lateral earth pressure on a buried pipe, which was installed in a plastic flowing soil mass undergoing lateral movement. On the basis of failure mode tests, the equation of lateral earth pressure to apply Maxwell's visco-elastic model was proposed to consider the soil deformation velocity. Through a series of model tests of differential soil deformation velocity, lateral earth pressure of theoretical equation was compared with experimental results. When lateral soil movement was raised, the lateral earth pressure acting on buried pipe increases linearly with the soil deformation velocity. It shows that the lateral earth pressure on buried pipe is largely affected by soil deformation velocity. When plastic soil movement was raised, lateral earth pressure predicted by theoretical equation showed good agreement with experimental results. Also, coefficient of viscosity by theoretical equation had a good agreement with direct shear test results.

A floating offshore structure has high tendency to occur the buckling when compressive, bending and shear loads applied. When the buckling is occurred, in-plane stiffness of structure is remarkably decreased. And it has a harmful effect on the local structural strength as well as global structural strength. In the present study, it has been investigated the ultimate strength of tubular members which is located between a floater and a damping plate of the floating pendulum wave energy converter. Nonlinear finite element method is conducted using the initial imperfection according to 1st buckling mode which is obtained from the elastic buckling analysis. It is also noted the ultimate bending strength characteristic varying with a diameter, thickness and stiffeners of the tubular member.

Metallic sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell subject to 3-point bending have been analyzed and then optimized for minimum weight. Inner dimpled shells can be easily fabricated by press or roll with high precision and bonded with same material skin sheets by resistance welding or adhesive bonding. Metallic sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can be optimally designed for minimum weight subject to prescribed combination of bending and transverse shear loads. Fundamental findings for lightweight design are presented through constrained optimization. Failure responses of sandwich plates are predicted and formulated with an assumption of narrow sandwich beam theory. Failure is attributed to four kinds of mechanisms: face yielding, face buckling, dimple buckling and dimple collapse. Optimized shape of inner dimpled shell structure is a hemispherical shell to minimize weight without failure. It is demonstrated that bending stiffness of sandwich plate is 2 or 3 times larger than solid plates with the same strength. Failure mode boundaries and iso-strength lines dependent upon the geometry and yield strain of the material are plotted with respect to geometric parameters on the failure map. Because optimal parameters of maximum strength for given material weight can be selected from the map, analytic solutions for maximum strength are expressed as a function of only material property and proposed strength. These optimal parameters match well with numerical optimal parameters.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the distribution of stress in the root end resected teeth. The finite element method was used to compare stresses along the root and retrograde filling material in seven two-dimensional models of mandibular 2nd premolar. Each model was endodontic treatment and gold crown' restoration. Each model divided with amagam core restoration or gold casting post restoration. Thus each model divided with shape of root end resection, depth of retropreparation and exposure length of root in the bony cavity. The seven models were classified as in the table 1 below. A load of 500N was applied $45^{\circ}$ diagonally on the lingual slope of the buccal cusp. These mode were analyzed with two dimensional finite element methods. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The maximum tensile stress along the inner canal wall was shown on the model 7. 2. When the model 1 was compared with the model 5, the maximum tensile stress along the inner canal wall showed the model 1. 3. Less equivalent stress was shown on the model 6 and more equivalent stress was shown on the model 4. 4. More shear stress was shown on the retrograde filling material of the model 7. 5. The models with increased length of exposed root in the bony cavity demonstrated a gradual increase to the tensile stress in X direction which occurred approximately a boundary between the bone and exposed root in' the bony cavity. 6. The model which had a case of matching the apex of post and a boundary between the bone and exposed root in the bony cavity demonstrated more increase tensile stress in X direction than other models.
